*** UPDATED x1 *** No Democratic gubernatorial debates

Posted in:

* No surprise at all

Gov. Pat Quinn won’t debate his lone Democratic challenger ahead of next month’s primary.

Activist Tio Hardiman wrote Quinn a letter requesting debates ahead of March 18, saying the public “deserves a serious debate.”

Quinn campaign spokeswoman Leslie Wertheimer said Friday she hadn’t seen the letter but no debates were to “take place.”

Politically, I guess I can’t blame Quinn. But, I’d really like to see a debate between those two.

*** UPDATE *** The News-Gazette is upset at Congressman Rodney Davis for not debating his Republican primary opponent

The local League of Women Voters is holding a forum for Democratic and Republican congressional candidates on Feb. 20 at the Champaign City Building. It starts at 7 p.m. Five of the six Democratic and Republican candidates are expected to be there.

Davis won’t be because he lacks sufficient respect for his opponent and the public to show up.

  1. Welp, now back to just watching the snow out my window.

  2. I would be concerned about Quinn’s ability to stand the heat. Last night when he was asked why Illinois was losing jobs like crazy, he melted badly enough that the carrot fell off his face.

  6. No problem. There will be a debate between 2 Democrats if Rauner wins the GOP primary.

  7. I think Rich and I agree. A debate would have made no sense for Gov. Quinn to agree to but I’ll miss the entertainment value, which I’m sure would have been enjoyable and probably relatively interesting.

  8. Of course Gov. Quinn could ignore it anyway, but is there some sort of norm for what % someone has to be polling at to justify inclusion in a debate? Maybe 5-10%?

  9. – Last night when he was asked why Illinois was losing jobs like crazy, he melted badly enough that the carrot fell off his face.-

How do you define losing jobs like crazy? There must be some kind of measure you’re referring to.

As was pointed out last week:

–As we documented in a new analysis with CareerBuilder, Texas created 22% of the nation’s net private-sector business establishments from 2009 to 2012 (more than 29,000). New York created 16% of all net establishments (nearly 21,000) and Illinois created 14% (18,000-plus). That’s more than half of all net establishments since the end of the recession in three states. –

  10. Of course it’s a smart move by Quinn.
He will coast to a primary victory, but I think he’ll actually end up losing a few counties to his opponent.

  14. “Winning and losing counties.” Should be a drinking game.

Actually, anyone who talks about “winning and losing counties” should probably call a cab and sleep it off.

  21. Downstate and Demoralized,
I’m sorry to pursue this any further, but I’d love to know if you are serious. You think Tio Hardiman will win (anywhere between a few and 99) counties in the Democratic primary?
