  2. Went to look at the list of “50 Greatest Beatle Songs”…what a body of work.

  3. Did anyone else hear the This American Life episode, when the comedy team who appeared on the Sullivan show with the Beatles? They had no idea who the Beatles were, and no idea what hit them on the show. It’s a fun listen.

  4. I’m a Beatles fan, but I have trouble wrapping my mind around connecting with fans so much before the Beatles arrived in the United States.

It was just the songs that moved people?

    Incredible.

  5. Some of my happiest childhood memories from the farm are digging to The Beatles on the enormous wooden combo tv/reel-to-reel/turntable.

Dance party in your jammies on a cold winter night with your brothers and sisters. Mom would join in. The old man pretended not to approve, but he was tapping his foot.

To borrow from another great, ain’t no sin being glad you’re alive.

  6. If you’re of a certain age, and I’m on the young side of this group, the Beatles are the soundtrack of your life.

I’ve never been a huge fan, but it is impossible to measure the impact their music has had on the lives of so many people for so many years. It’s timeless and enduring and marks a modern golden age in the art and culture of western civilization.

  7. I remember watching them on the Ed Sullivan show. We were at my grandparents house. Actually what I remember the most were the adults who were there all commenting on their hair. How they looked like girls; how terrible they looked; what’s the world coming to?
With the way they were talking I’m surprised anyone ever heard of those guys again.

  8. They invented pop music! Without the Beatles there be no justin beiber

  9. I urge any younger people to watch “Hard Day’s Night” starring the Beatles - it captured the spirit of the group, and a very overlooked comedy film.

  10. @ DJ: “Without the Beatles there be no justin beiber”

Aha! Now we know who to blame.

Me, I was a rebel. I preferred the Rolling Stones.

  13. Still? To this very day, Gumby? Whoever it is must be a hard-core fan then. Kinda creepy.

  14. Rauner = McCartney (most famous and has the most $$$)

Rutherford = Lennon (he’s getting killed politically, but might have been the most talented of the bunch)

Dillard = Harrison (got caught up with weird religious gurus, which caused his popularity to plummet for many years)

Brady = Ringo Starr (One replaced Pete Best, the other lost to one of Illinois’ worst).

    Comment by 47th Ward Friday, Feb 7, 14 @ 2:15 pm

  15. Rauner - Ringo Starr, not really a “Beatle”, but is a Beatle….

    Dillard - George Harrison, ditto - 47th Ward -…

Brady - John Lennon, tries to be true to himself, first and foremost.

Rutherford - Paul McCarthy, willing to be the fun, upbeat one, and bringing everyone together if possible

  16. The greatest band of the 20th century.

  17. Well, once they landed here and showered us with their happy, joyous, simple and yet so often meaninful special, unique brand of Music, and to later visit our own Beloved Home State (particularly the special pass through Southern Illinois!), to borrow one of their great lines for all of our fellow Illinoisans from “She Loves You,” we really should agree , and repeat over and over again as they pumped out the Tune, that, “With a love like that–You know you should be glad…!” (”Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah…!!!!”).

Comment by Just The Way It Is One Friday, Feb 7, 14 @ 4:10 pm

  18. The spelling above should be “…meaningful,…” (And, yet, “meaninful” MIGHT actually sound like it has a little, and if so, fitting BRITISH-sounding twist to it, maybe)???
