@RonSandack: I’m frustrated 2, but taking steps towards reforming IL more important than short term budget stalemate.

It’s the Agenda, decimating unions, and really nothing else…

… except close Illinois Higher Ed… Eliminating Social Services…

“Bruce has no social agenda.” - Diana Rauner, President. Ounce of Prevention.

“Hang in there!” - Todd Maisch.

Keep these things in mind as Rauner blames the Dems for Gubernatorial Vetoes only he can do.

    Right? Exactly right.

  15. We live in a world where people hear what they want to hear, regardless of the facts. The right only hears that the left wants a “massive tax hike” and hates business owners. The left only hears that the right hates workers and a tax hike will solve all of the problems.

Neither are true and that is what prolongs this mess.

  17. –Gov Rauner says Dems holding colleges, grants, social services hostage–

I’m pretty sure I was the first here to advance the hostage analogy, and I’m quite certain I meant Gov. Rauner and the Republicans in the General Assembly as the hostage-takers.

(Geez, I wince every time I have to toss the Illinois Republican Party in with Rauner’s scatter-brained schemes. Not the party of my youth).

I’ve since abandoned the hostage analogy. Thanks to Sen. Radogno’s candid interview with Bernie, I’m absolutely certain that “squeezing the beast” for the “necessary shakeout” is the plan, in action.

Seriously, you break contracts with every social service provider in the state for a term limits bill?

You zero out every public university and community college in the state for some marginal workman’s comp changes?

You create record, recession-like deficits for a redistricting bill?

You’d have to be outside your mind to buy that stuff.

Bruce doesn’t have a social agenda.

Are we clear on what that means now?

Why should the Speaker talk to 1.4% when all 1.4% wants is his failing agenda. There is nothing else to 1.4% except what he wants. He thinks it is his by right of wealth, power and position.

Comment by Huh? Tuesday, Apr 12, 16 @ 12:43 pm

  22. @JS Mill,

The difference being the Runaground Agenda ™ has no affect on passing a budget, except for the fact that Rauner is holding as a shield/poison pill to getting anything done.

And the tax increase? Yeah, the GOP is going to sign on to that if a budget is passed. There is no other way to get the revenue we need.

  23. “We can’t afford to be compassionate if we can’t be competitive.” That’s the Rauner doctrine in a nutshell. And it’s going to come back to haunt him very, very soon. You say you want to do both…how hard is that to figure out? You say Illinois can afford to do both.

So all of you here want to keep the same guy - Mike Madigan - on a pedestal and keep doing basically the same things? Over and over? Is that correct?

Comment by Beeker Tuesday, Apr 12, 16 @ 12:59 pm

  38. Hey Beeker. I am as conservative and as Republican as they come. Never pulled a democratic ballot in my life. I have no love for Mike Madigan. However, if you cannot see that this Governor is an absolute and total disaster, then you are beyond help. Only Bruce Rauner could have made Mike Madigan look reasonable. This never ending speechifying by Governor Moneybags is not governing. Not even close. I cannot wait till November, as I will not be casting a vote for a single republican legislator. When Rauner gets blown out in November, we will finally get a budget and back to some semblance of responsible governance.

Comment by Saluki Tuesday, Apr 12, 16 @ 1:04 pm

  39. It’s fairly obvious that Rauner doesn’t want a budget.

He seems to think he’s getting more mileage — and winning whatever it is he’s running for at the moment — without a budget and with all (misplaced, in his case) the moral outrage.

Does he not realize that governing requires compromise and respect for the democratic process? Since he is not listening to Illinois citizens and to the Democratic leaders and legislators, maybe the Republican leadership needs to sat this man down and explain to him the “art of governing.”
This man is destroying this State economically and in the process Illinois citizens, social services, secondary and higher education are becoming the victims

  59. Although I consider myself a fairly liberal Democrat, many of my closest friends are fairly conservative Republicans.

And, among those who are in the know about the realities of what is going on in Illinois now, they are as frustrated at the games being played and the disaster that BVR has inflicted on the structure of our programs and institutions being impacted more and more each day. And I detect no defections from the Republican downstate members of the GA. They all know about that $20 million sledge hammer that is being held over their heads.

I can’t disagree with this assessment more. I literally hear the former every day by Republican politicians and the right wing media. I’ve literally NEVER heard anybody on the left claim that a tax hike will solve everything. Never. Not once. To the right hating workers, yes that is a pretty consistent drum beat

There are some practical reforms on the table that could be part of a grand bargain for revenue, reform and a better state for everyone. The governor of Michigan’s own hand-picked task force established that he sat on his tukkus when he knew his people were drinking poisoned water. He should go to prison for criminal neglect…

….The governor of Indiana humiliated his state on the world stage and cost them millions with his despicable gay-bashing-by-government….

  73. Rauner intentionally sabotaged the meeting right before the meeting. He kept posturing for the Speaker to come meet with him and then pulled this stunt. Radogno said herself that squeezing the beast might do some good. They are not done squeezing yet. All this means is that there will be no deal in the near future and that this Governor will continue to run up debt at an unprecedented pace. The Democrats should accede on the term limits but add a provision to make it easier to recall the Governor. Put a referendum on the ballot and if 55% vote for the referendum to recall he’s gone. I’m convinced now that there is no end in sight as long as we have this incompetent Governor.

  76. Based on the audio from the “bidness” leaders presser, it seems that “bipartisan” means Raunerites and Republicans. It is time for Republicans, especially in the House to decide if $20 million dollars are worth the cost. There was nothing new here, just tired, retreaded campaignin’. Time to GoAround. If Durkin and Radogno don’t want to because their seats and power are more important to them than the People of Illinois, hopefully more moderate Republicans will understand the importance of governance and not playing politics in the “school yard”.

You either support every single word of the Turnaround Agenda, or you love the status quo.

I feel like most reasonable people exist somewhere between there. Like, I abhor all the Turnaround Agenda bits that gut collective bargaining. But I have no problem with doing more to reform workers comp, or property taxes, or redistricting. Just don’t crush unions in the process. I also have no problem with a budget that includes new revenues AND cuts.

Rauner wants to burn down the house (state) so he can collect the insurance money and start completely over again. Trouble is, I live in that house he is burning down. We all do. Nothing that he is doing is going to help Illinois in the long run because he can’t figure out the game. Cannot figure out how to get what he wants. I am willing bet dollars to donuts that Rauner, and the Republicans get blown out in November, leaving Madigan with an even stronger upper hand. Rauner will leave office, having done lots of damage, but not accomplishing any of the things he wants to get done. Tell me how that is success….

  88. –“we can’t afford to be compassionate if we’re not competitive.”–

I see now from a previous poster that Gov. Rauner said that.

    OK.

At this moment, I can’t address that revealing statement in a civil manner under the rules of the house.

But it is the signature statement of the Rauner vision for our state. Put it on ice. Don’t you dare forget that our governor said that, and that it informs his every action going forward.

I’d also ask everyone to examine the governor’s rather subjective definitions of the words “competitive” and “afford” and the much more concrete definition of the word “compassion,” and apply them in real-world ways to your everyday life.

Personally, I never imagined that someone could conceive that there is a price tag on “compassion.” That’s not how I was raised by my peeps, and I ain’t going to get turned around anytime soon.

    See you in church.

  89. “maybe the Republican leadership needs to sat this man down and explain to him the “art of governing.”

I recall former governors Edgar and Thompson trying to do this very thing. Rauner said thanks but no thanks. I got this. There’s just no saving people like Rauner from themselves.

I couldn’t agree more. I can’t believe Rauner said this out loud. It’s so significant and telling that it should go right along side Sandack’s “I’m frustrated too….”

They are bookends, the continuation of a narrative, Sandack makes sure Rauner owns it, Rauner makers sure everyone is clear, people don’t matter, Agenda matters…

    Bookends. Sandack-Rauner.

    Ball Game.

  92. Cubs in ‘16- You are correct, Rauner can’t be saved. He is his own savior. People need to start realizing this. His type of “religion” is narrow-minded and self-serving. At the business luncheon he called himself a “volunteer”. He doesn’t see himself as a governor. He bought that position. That kind of lifeview is so short-sighted.

  93. There is a price tag on everything the government does. Illinois is losing jobs and employers relative the rest of the Country since 2000 and a lot of tax revenue went with those jobs. Illinois cannot afford to raise taxes too high to the point we are not competitive and we lose further population and revenue. Take the Governor at his word Illiinois needs to be more competitive to be more compassionate to the less fortunate. It is possible to raise tax rates and actually get less revenue. A quick survey of states that passed a millionaire surcharge will see those laws were not huge successes

Frankly, that sickens my heart - Lucky Pierre - but it speaks volumes tonyiyr own character and compassion.

  102. It’s just so bizarre that when folks talk about how bad the current Rauner led disaster is, the Raunerite assumption is that that same person is OK with the financial disaster of the past several decades. I’m not OK with it, I suspect very few people are. Then again, I can tell the difference between financial mismanagement over several decades, and an financial and human disaster without precedent. We need a governor capable of governing, that involves at a minimum knowing the difference between bad and considerably worse. It’s time for Rauner to stop thinking that captaining this neglected and mismanaged ship of state in the direction of several icebergs is somehow an improvement.

Jim Edgar never would frame public and governmental compassion by the numbers on a private sector ledger.

  108. Unbelievable.

Radogno and durkin make somewhat reasonable noises, everyone goes ooohhh. A leaders meeting is scheduled, everyone goes aaahhh. Then rauner just cant help himself and has to spout off w the same old crap about reforms,
competitiveness, dems want a massive tax increase, etc.

    Words–compromise.
    Actions–starve the beast, winning.

  113. How long is it going to take for Illinois residents to realized that our governor is a joke. He did not share the details of his during the election campaign because he knew that he would have never become the governor of this state with such a lame, unrealistic, agenda. I guess people have learned their lesson: don’t vote for anyone who is unwilling to lay out a clear agenda the outlines specifically how they are going to tackle challenges facing our states. WHAT A WASTE OF VOTES!

Perhaps you were snozin’ but Madigan and the Dems

  115. The often prophetic words of Bob Dylan, as applied to Gov. Rauner.

You’ve got a lotta nerve to say you are my friend
When I was down you just stood there grinnin’
You’ve got a lotta nerve to say you got a helping hand to lend
You just want to be on the side that’s winnin’

You say I let you down, ya know its not like that
If you’re so hurt, why then don’t you show it?
You say you’ve lost your faith, but that’s not where its at
You have no faith to lose, and ya know it

I know the reason, that you talked behind my back
I used to be among the crowd you’re in with
Do you take me for such a fool, to think I’d make contact
With the one who tries to hide what he don’t know to begin with?

You see me on the street, you always act surprised
You say “how are you?”, “good luck”, but ya don’t mean it
When you know as well as me, you’d rather see me paralyzed
Why don’t you just come out once and scream it

No, I do not feel that good when I see the heartbreaks you embrace
If I was a master thief perhaps I’d rob them
And tho I know you’re dissatisfied with your position and your place
Don’t you understand, its not my problem?

I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment I could be you
Yes, I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
You’d know what a drag it is to see you
