Yingling on whether he’s voting for Madigan: “I don’t know, you should talk to him”

Yingling Signals He Will Follow Madigan’s Orders
“I don’t know, you should talk to him.”

Rep. Sam Yingling was asked this afternoon whether he will support Mike Madigan for another term as Speaker.

Yingling has received $1.6 million from Madigan, and it looks like that money has bought Yingling’s unconditional loyalty.

When asked whether he will support Madigan again, Yingling responded, “I don’t know, you should talk to him.”

Yingling won a close re-election bid on the promise that he would be an independent representative for his district.

Will Yingling break that promise?

* The video

Oof.

People need to be a lot smarter than this.

As you already know, Rep. Yingling was among the first three House Democrats identified by the ILGOP as targets this week.

  1. Rep. Yingling,

Either be better, or avoid all human contact for the rest of your term.

    Rauner doesn’t want governin’…

If Rauner did, this wouldn’t be so “in your face”…

This is about the politics. As long as The Ounce and Diana can function, then a budget, Illinois, and social services will suffer… with stuff like this.

  2. Wow. Sam really is as advertised … not too bright.

It is highly unlikely that Madigan is seriously challenged within his caucus next month, but this and LOTS more of this type of thing will be used in the 2018 elections against many –and I mean many- House Dems. … the ones who regularly tell their constituents at the door-step that they really don’t like Madigan and privately admit to their voters that Madigan has been around far too long and should not have the power he has.

Yep, this is all about a longer play in the continuing war and non-stop campaigning for all of the marbles in 2018.

  5. A Yingling fail for sure.

This raises another question- will any of the ILGOP meme era vote their district or will they stay bought and paid for by the billionaires boys club?

EIU,SIU,and WIU would like to know.

  6. Sam seems aggravated in the brief video so i would take this as a snarky comment. However when you’re being targeted for this specific issue then you gotta play it cool. Unforced error by the Rep.

  7. But for sites like Capitol Fax, this is inside baseball stuff. Most people don’t know and don’t care about this tit for tat stuff. Gov. Rauner and his donors spent millions of dollars this election year and if it had not had been for Donald Trump, it would have been snake eyes for him and the Illinois GOP. At the end of the day, this is playground kids stuff. I wish both sides would cut it out and start governing.

  8. Was it the smartest thing for him to say? No.

But, wow, I think people are really making more of this then what it is — a frustrated, tired legislator that let the tracker get under his skin.

  9. I’m not a fan of this type of “gotcha politics”, but every elected official, on both sides, should be prepared for this.

Your answer should be as familiar to you as the name of your children.

  10. Maybe Yingling is smarter than you think.

It sounds to me like there is something being negotiated between the two, and the ball is Madigan’s court.

Yingling is in for two long years and there is an opening for an inter-party antagonist with Frank’s departure.

To this independent voter, the anti-Madigan platform works from all sides, especially if the politician truly has, in his serving heart, the best interest of his district and residents of the state.

  11. Why the heck are you answering a question from someone behind you? If you don’t respond and they don’t see your face, all they have is a video of the back of your head - meaning you win they lose.

  13. @JSMill

It would help if Dems actually ran campaigns to put the heat on GOPers there.

Comment by hisgirlfriday Thursday, Dec 1, 16 @ 9:43 am

  14. Anony - you are correct in a sense BUT things like “WHO WILL YOU VOTE FOR SPEAKER?!” is a huge issue. The national GOP used it against DCCC candidates in 2010 and it worked. Nancy Pelosi’s name was dragged through the mud and her rep (however good it was before 2010) was ruined. She was made to look foolish and the tactic worked and is still being used by the NRCC. The state GOP used it a lot this year and for a presidential year it had pretty good overall results. Rep. Yingling should have said nothing. Even answering with “I have to use the restroom” would be better than being snarky and giving the HRO and ILGOP more fodder for an off-year election cycle.

Comment by Team Sleep Thursday, Dec 1, 16 @ 9:53 am

  15. This reminds me of what the national GOP did in 2010 to link vulnerable Dems and Nancy Pelosi…get Members on record saying they support their toxic leader

Comment by Bob Cobb Thursday, Dec 1, 16 @ 9:53 am

  16. Why put the heat on Republicans when you can dust off mailers with 20 year out of date design quality saying Republican X supports sex offenders and banning abortion for rape victims?

Comment by Grand Avenue Thursday, Dec 1, 16 @ 9:56 am

  17. @hisgirlfriday- spot on. If I were a member of the ILDP, I would be relentlessly pounding the GOP that way. They are incredibly vulnerable on this.

In the same manner as the governor repeats his TA bullet pints regardless of question I would answer any question with bullet points on the GOP endenture to Rainer. Relentless.

The Democratic Party is failing their members on the messaging front. So much raw meat there.

Comment by JS Mill Thursday, Dec 1, 16 @ 9:58 am

  18. Poor response by Sam. OTOH, since when did “independent” mean categorically rejecting your party’a leadership. The candidates for speaker are MJM and Durkin. Do we expect “independent” Republicans to reject Jim? Oh yeah, there aren’t any. No matter, the messaging is working.

Still, I find it incredibly disheartening that Rainer is resorting to campaign tactics so early…a tracker being used nearly two years from Election Day? Doesn’t bode well for the next two years. They obviously don’t want to work with anyone

Comment by Joe Bidenopolous Thursday, Dec 1, 16 @ 10:04 am

  19. - Lucky Pierre -

    Sounds swell.

One last question… How will this get Rauner 9 votes in the House, 8 votes in the Senate for the next two years?

    You think on that.

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Dec 1, 16 @ 10:10 am

  20. Three weeks after the election, and you roll out partisan trackers at the Dome during a session?

Further evidence, if you needed it after nearly two years, that the rich-guy hobbyist has no interest in governing. It’s all the game, all the time.

Comment by wordslinger Thursday, Dec 1, 16 @ 10:21 am

  21. It’s possible that Madigan will let Yingling take a pass on him as speaker. It’s the strategically smart thing to do. If Yingling were to vote yes, this would only prove to deplete party resources in two years to defend such a vote, and Madigan doesn’t need the vote to keep power. So everyone will understand that kiss the ring is deemed unnecessary in this extreme case.

Even if Madigan gave a pass, which likely won’t happen — it’s not like the GOP will cease using Madigan as a campaign tactic against Yingling. Instead of saying he voted for Madigan, they will say he voted for Madigan’s policies and politics and took his money.

  25. Wrong thread OW, I haven’t weighed in this one yet.

With the budget crunch it would be much cheaper to invest in a rubber stamp for each district and get rid of the rep. No health care or pensions required

Comment by Lucky Pierre Thursday, Dec 1, 16 @ 11:00 am

  26. PL - you are correct. However - and my memory is foggy on this - did Mr. Yingling vote Madigan for Speaker in the past? If he did then not voting for him in January 2017 is a moot point.

Or that he is so far in the Speaker’s pocket that he had to ask permission not to vote for him.

Election cycles can’t go on forever. That’s why they’re called cycles. At some point there has to be room to govern.

  34. “You should talk to him” doesn’t really make sense as an answer to that question. Trackers like to badger folks with a lot of questions at once and then take a ten second clip out of context.

Rich, can we see the rest of the tape?
