Saturday update

* The Tribune has a quote from Senate President John Cullerton about the governor’s lawyers refusing to represent Blagojevich at the Senate impeachment trial…

“He can get another lawyer. He’s a lawyer himself,” Cullerton said. “If he chooses to not have a lawyer, that’s up to him.”

I had some quotes from Cullerton for subscribers. They were about the same, but a bit harsher.

Even if no attorney for the governor files an appearance at the trial, Blagojevich would be considered to have pleaded not guilty under the Senate’s rules, Cullerton said. The governor is not expected to be present. […]

“They have set it up to have the outcome before the trial,” [Blagojevich attorney Sam Adam, Jr.] said. “How is that fair?” […]

Cullerton defended the rules, saying they mirror those used in the impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton, who was acquitted.

“Impeachments are very rare, and convictions are even rarer,” Cullerton said.

Kudos to the Tribune for getting this story exactly right. Ed Genson and Sam Adam have obviously been attempting to build a case to convince a federal judge that Blagojevich can’t get a fair trial, and believe resigning in protest will enhance that effort.

* And here’s more on the Granberg IDNR appointment

Former state Rep. Kurt Granberg was appointed Friday to oversee the budget-ravaged Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

The Carlyle Democrat’s appointment by impeached Gov. Rod Blagojevich came just a week after Granberg resigned the House seat he’s held since 1987.

Granberg’s new job wasn’t a surprise. The Lee Springfield Bureau reported he was in line for the post in September.

Granberg acknowledged Friday he has been planning on the appointment for months and plans to increase tourism at the state’s various parks and sites with ideas that include a golf trail in southern Illinois.

“I thought I would be appointed by now, frankly,” Granberg said Friday evening.

* I’m also hearing that Teamsters Joint Council 25 plans to endorse Rep. John Fritchey for the 5th Congressional District race next week.
