Adam explains why the lawyers quit in protest

Posted in:

* Chicago lawyer Sam Adam, Jr. told CBS2 that the governor is “100 percent” on board with his attorneys’ decision not to represent him at the Senate’s impeachment trial…

“We made [the governor] sit down and we made him go through and see what is exactly taking place here.

“And he’s appalled. He cannot believe that this is his government. He cannot believe this is the State of Illinois. He cannot believe that as governor this is what they do to you. He has less rights as an elected official and governor than a kid who steals candy out of the store. That, that, that’s asinine to us…

“Once he saw it he’s on board 100 percent.”

* More from the CBS2 interview with Adam…

“This should be, what makes us fundamentally American, it should be harder than a criminal case to take away a governor from his people.

“It should be just as difficult to take away someone’s freedom as it is their representative in government, because government has a tendency to be over-zealous. And we need our representatives there, and the people of Illinois should know you can’t have a kangaroo court to take away our elected officials.”

Yeah, well, woulda, coulda, shoulda. The Illinois Constitution is what it is, and the governor is sworn to uphold it, as is. Don’t do the crime, etc., etc.

* Adam complained that he couldn’t call witnesses who were in the criminal complaint, which is true. The ruling was initially made by the House at the request of the US Attorney. Adam added that the governor shouldn’t be impeached for something that happened in a prior term, before he was reelected…

“The people have spoken here and said ‘That is something that took place before, we want him back as our governor.’”

He has a point about that.

Adam also complained about this Senate trial rule

The House impeachment record, upon receipt by the Secretary, is deemed admitted as evidence in the trial of impeachment before the Senate.

Adam said he ought to be able to challenge the acceptance of the House impeachment evidence. That’s not gonna ever happen. Also, keep in mind that these are the US Senate trial rules that ended up exonerating Bill Clinon.

* More on why his lawyers quit in protest…

“He’s been thrown out already. We’re just gonna go down there, if we were to be his lawyers, and let them do it in front of us…

“The only way we can protest this, the only way we can show how unfair this is, the only way we can be his lawyer is not to be there, to bring this to the people and let them see just how unfair this is…”
