* Let’s compare a couple of TV ads. Pat Quinn’s “You know me” ad from the last week of the Democratic primary…
Gov. Quinn’s TV ad from the last week of the general election…
The older ad seems to have been shot in much softer light than the new ad, which was shot in half shadow. The old ad was filmed in a home. The new spot was shot in front of a dark backdrop. The background music behind the primary ad helped make the spot more emotional. Quinn mentioned Dan Hynes by name back then, no such mention of Bill Brady now. His veterans work was played up before, but it’s almost all about “jobs” now.
I think the primary ad was better. Back then, it made me sit up and take notice. This new one leaves me sorta empty inside. Your thoughts?
* Meanwhile, I’m never buying pistachios again…
He’s a good actor and really has a presence on TV. He’s also a convicted liar. I love pistachios, but no more will my lips touch them.
* Speaking of the criminal, Pat Quinn’s campaign posted audio of Blagojevich telling WBBM Radio years ago that Quinn is “not a member” of his administration. Listen…
*** UPDATE *** I don’t know why, but I kept forgetting during the weekend to post this radio spot the president cut for Giannoulias…

There is something very appropriate about Rod selling nuts.

I thought it was funny the guy pushing the box in from the side resembled Quinn

Re: Quinn’s “you know me” ad –
I think it’s very telling that he refers to what he “will do” as Governor, not was he has been doing.

Pot Stirrer, I thought the same thing. And all black with the neon green tie is such a classy look….

Why did Quinn wait so long to run that veterans ad? I thought that was the very best of the bunch …
Comment by Pioneer P. Monday, Nov 1, 10 @ 12:20 pm
Why did Quinn wait so long to release that WBBM clip? That would have come in handy, oh, I don’t know, maybe the whole dang campaign season.
Comment by Mark Buerhle Monday, Nov 1, 10 @ 12:23 pm
Didn’t Levi Johnston do a pistachio ad as well?

I hear that Rod is up for Dancin with the Stars next.

Did anyone see Blago on CNN (I think) over the weekend? They had him on as some sort of expert on this election season in Illinois… going so far as to ask him about Rahm Emmanuel’s Mayoral run.
Like you won’t eat pistachio’s any more, I am done with CNN. How could thet possibly put that guy on as someone viewers should trust or relate to?
Comment by Wondering... Monday, Nov 1, 10 @ 12:55 pm
With apologies to CNN…
Doh! It was Fox… I should have known.

Wondering, why are you watching cable news at all? lol

C’mon Rich, it’s almost holiday season. If you swear off pistachios, you might as well swear off oxygen and beer.

It was on a common TV at the health club I was at. Anyway, it was the day before Halloween and I was watching something that was scary.
Blago as a respected commentator! Frightful…

“If you swear off pistachios, you might as well swear off oxygen and beer”
If Rod ever does an ad for my favorite brands of dark chocolate, coffee, or diet soda, I’m going to be one unhappy camper!

Spotted last night during trick or treat: a young boy wearing a suit and tie, a dark wig, and some kind of gray cardboard contraption that looked like a giant garbage can or wastebasket. It took me a while to figure out who he was supposed to be — Blago behind bars!

Traditionally, pistachios are a garnish used on cannoli, which of course we are supposed to take with us when we leave the gun.
Comment by Cincinnatus Monday, Nov 1, 10 @ 1:48 pm
Two days before the election and this ad appears reminding everyone of Blago. The Dems have to be wondering “what next”?

Rich-
Just swear off that particular brand of pistachios. Don’t stopping cracking all nuts just because of one nutty crackpot.
That’s like banning all beers from your human temple just because the Old Style didn’t agree with you one night.

Quinn as Uncle Fuzzy is fine but that I doubt that it’s enough.
It’s not just the unemployment. People lost a lot of money in home equity that they haven’t gotten back. Real estate had been on a nice twenty-year uptick — that really stung when it went south.
I heard on the radio over the weekend that of mortgages that aren’t even in foreclosure, 20o% are under water and another 30% are on the verge.
That’s a very angry electorate. Dems are going to give back everything they got in 2008 plus a lot.

“I heard on the radio over the weekend that of mortgages that aren’t even in foreclosure, 200% are under water”
I suspect you meant to say 20% there… otherwise it would mean every single non-forclosed mortgage out there is underwater twice over, and I don’t think it’s quite that bad yet.

The first “You know me” ad was homier, and better overall on positive images. But the new one is stronger on two very important points–first, the emphasis is on PQ, the man, the down-to-earth, next door neighbor kind of guy you can trust but who IS–and has proven he has BEEN for years–someone who will fight for what is right, and these days, he clearly recognizes and emphasizes in his second major point, is to get people decent WORK in this brutal economy–while recognizing that, no matter what, if you keep him around (unlike Brady’s brutal across the board chop) we’re NOT gonna cut back on what’s ALSO, bottom line, truly important to people–police (i.e. their saftety), education (i.e. their children and tax dollars at work), and veterans’ services (i.e. our patriotism protected, many of whom fall into that critical category of older voters, too).
It’s one on one– like me or reject me, folks, but straight up–this is who I AM (ala unlike BB, folks, “You know ME!” as opposed to “Who is that Guy–looks pretty risky to ya, doesn’t he? i.e the message to voters is “Better to play it safe and stick with who ya know”) and what I’ll do and won’t do is wise, caring, and reasonable (just in case ya haven’t heard).
No question, the new Ad gets an “A.” If they indundate the TV waves with it, AND they somehow pull out the numerically larger Dem base, Quinn’s still got a shot to eke out a squeaker of a victory on Tuesday. And although some are trying to minimize it, the Obama rally of 35,000 plus for Quinn was big–progressives and blacks were excited, re-energized, and inspired– I hear people blocks away could repeatedly hear the “YES WE CAN” chant–plus, their were prayers–with all of that motivation, that GOP end zone celebration from the Team from Brady, Illinois may have forgotten to look up at the clock–yep, there’s still time left up on the clock and with Team Obama-Quinn with the ball, there may just be enough time, energy and skill for that one, final game winning drive! Enjoy the 2 minute drill folks!!!

I’m a Pat Quinn fan. (I know, I know–all of us PQ fans should rent a plane and fly to Vegas after the election, and we can sell the empty seats on eBay.) As a fan, I like what he’s saying in the current ad; I like the focus. But is it just me, or do you get this weird, post-Halloween, headless horseman Crane effect when you watch Quinn’s head bobbing, evidently separate from his body, in front of that black backdrop? Rather distracting. (Amusing, too, except I want people to pay attention to what the guy is saying!)
