* Midnight - I’m staying up. You with me?
* Oh, and in case you were wondering, Gov. Quinn’s lead is now 7,576 votes.
*** 12:06 am *** Bill Brady just said the election won’t be decided tonight, so that’s it for him.
*** 12:10 am *** The AP has declared Republican Bob Dold the winner in the 10th CD.
* 12:33 am - The Quinn margin is now 10,933.
* 12:39 am - This is odd. Here is the AP total for Speaker Madigan’s district…
November 03, 2010 - 01:30AM ET
State House - District 22 - General
Illinois - 43 of 87 Precincts Reporting - 49%
Madigan , Michael (i) Dem 8,294 81%
Ryan , Patrick GOP 1,889 19%
Notice that less than half the precincts are reported as counted. But the city and the county both have MJM’s district as completely counted.
So, either somebody forgot to update a single district. Or, the AP isn’t including those MJM district totals in their grand totals. I strongly suspect it’s the former, not the latter. But one never knows.
*** 12:43 am *** From Caroi Fowler of Fox Chicago…
9k absentee ballots in Chicago still to be counted.
That would be the ballgame.
* 12:48 am - Quinn’s lead is now 9,033.
* 12:50 am - Precincts not yet counted statewide: 266. Precincts not counted in Chicago: 53. Not counted in Cook: 69, which is the same as earlier. I hope David Orr has not gone to bed. That would suck.
* 12:54 am - Quinn to crowd: “It looks like another landslide victory is heading our way.”
* 12:55 am - The governor’s lead is now 9,133.
* 12:57 am - Quinn: “I think when all is said, we’ll end up on top with the most votes.” And the crowd goes wild.
* 1:04 am - Great. Just great. The Chicago elections results website is down.
* 1:16 am - The AP hasn’t updated in a while, so I’m gonna take a nap. Update in comments if you wish. Thanks much for everything tonight. I have the greatest commenters on Planet Earth. Bar none!
*** 1:30 am *** Barton here. As Rich said, the CBOE’s Web site is down, but Cook County and the AP continue to provide updates. There are now 32 precincts that still need to be counted in the County. Quinn leads by 8,515.
* 1:43 am - Some new data from the city board. There are now 48 Chicago precincts uncounted. Quinn leads Brady in the city precincts that have been counted 75.4% - 17.5%.
* 1:50 am - It would appear as if the downstate vote is done being counted, according to a graphic POLITICO is maintaining with data from the AP. It’s on you, Cook County.

Logical Thinker, on your point about a Pyrrhic Victory from the previous thread — It depends on which is more important to you. What has more power and prestige and more ability to help your party? A governor’s office with control over a $60B budget and thousands of jobs or some new Congresscritters with bully pulpits and no leadership positions and control of no more than 100 Republican jobs?
OT… I never watch CBS2 but do Bill Curtis and Walter Jacobsen always resemble the old guys on the Muppet Show anchoring the news or is it just the way they’re set up for election coverage?

Looks like 2,000,000 fewer votes in 2010 than in 2008 (about the same as 2006). Reminds of what Speaker Madigan said about the 1970 Constitutional Convention — moving gubernatorial elections to the “off-year” was the biggest tactical mistake.
It really is something that we lose 40% of the electorate for every gubernatorial election. There’s something very wrong about that.

311 precincts out for Gov, with nearly half in Cook plus those 9500 absentee ballots. I’m utterly amazed, but I think Quinn pulled it out

Of course in this election year do you have a recount.
I have to hand it to comrade madigan, that was some work he and his squad did. For all the talk about obama, madigan did a better job in illinois and this is probably why he is who he is.

1,312,416 votes counted in cook,
with 97% reporting I would say there’s roughly 30,000-40,000 votes left in cook,
so with quinn has been averaging 64% in cook county
30k to 40k x 63&= 18k-25k votes left for quinn in cook.

So is the problem with military personnel not getting their absentee ballots–and the lateness of the ones who did–going to be one of the Brady camp’s reasons for the loss? Will they be on the state board of elections about how that fiasco was handled?

So who is going to head to the Billy Goat Tavern tomorrow (at Lower Michigan, not Lower Wacker Mark Kirk) to see if Kirk and Alexi show up to share that bipartisan beer?
That was a halfway decent moment in his speech and the news cut away before he started working with Durbin which is a shame, because it seemed like his first part of the speech was way smug and cocky like a guy who won by 10 or 15 percent and not cut things super close. Pretty offputting. Will be interesting to see if he becomes besties with the Maine ladies or gives the Tea Party folks what they want in terms of obstructionism.

Assuming Quinn Hangs on I wonder about the future
Cook County alone can run the state.A similar thing happened in New York depite senate and Gov Landslides there upstate house seats were worse than ours 2 of our dem losses were Mark Kirk related . If it was another teabagger Only 17and 11 would have gone. I think New York was worse but if dems hold legislature there like here thye can unpack New York and Chicago and think of CA and Florida The house could flip flop a lot
Ohio MI and PA were wipe outs due to much worse economic devatation than say IL or MN .
Sorry if I am rambling but this is really a strange election and I think a significant one

Hey … everyone …
I just got a note that the Brady campaign is NOT telling Jason they are losing yet … they are calling it “Operation Santa Claus” … so when you want to reference votes, call them “peanuts” and when you want to mention Quinn … you say “Hamster”
Example …
“Well, the ‘Hamster’ has about 8k ‘peanuts’ now”
Don’t break Jason’s heart … don’t bust his bubble yet … we were kid’s once too

I will stay up as long as I can, but as I have my night cap (err, my 3rd night cap before bed), I and all my conservatives in southern illinois are troubled by this:
Kirk wins,
Rutherford wins,
JBT wins,
Dwight Kay wins (really sweet, b/c a friend of blago is no friend of mine),
McCann wins,
Rosenthal wins,
dold wins,
hultgren wins,
kinzinger wins,
walsh probably wins,
nationally, we now have speaker boehner,
yet, somehow, Bill Brady loses. I don’t get it. I know the real answer is that downstate and the collars don’t matter. Combine that with the ole’ whore beating pawnbroker, I understand how Brady loses. Probably right. However, nine months ago, if you told me my party would win everthig but governor and kilbride retention, I would have taken it. However, tonight, it feels like a confusing result/victory.

I feel like we’re losing the country. The torrent of Citizens’ United corporate money turned this election. It helps to explain why Quinn may yet win and Giannoulias lost — the opposite from expectations, not to mention the opposite of the quality of the candidates on both sides. The country is gradually being bought by corporations, many of them from abroad, who do not have the national interest at heart. And in a sense, we’re witnessing the abdication of America’s superpower status with this trend, with this election as the clearest step yet. We face two years of kicking the can down the road, with probably an intensification of the country’s financial troubles as a consequence. The torrent of corporate propaganda on the media during this election was worthy of Putin’s Russia, and it’s only going to get worse.

I’m with you Rich. As I’m listening to Ramblin’ Jack my thoughts go to what a problem the state is in. I like Brady as a friend and that’s why he go my vote. But if he loses, I am not sure tax increases solve our problems. As I tell my wife and anyone else who will listen, I have no confidence thet Quinn will stop spending and use new money to take care of old problems. Add the very sorry state of state workers who are not in the unions that will be pulling the heavy loads and I am not sure what the close Blue v. Red races will mean for our ability to do the bootstrap thing and get us out of where we are.
But as Jack says: “There’s more pretty girls than one.”

Hopefully, he will have enough money to overcome the pic. Yeah, I am sure any primary opponent will have fun with that pic of schook in those white pants with president BAM.
going back to redistricting, as a silver lining, it will be neat to see how evil speaker mm will be towards his gop opponents. I always thought he was evil, but he could be worse than I thought. I realize that the speaker and his team have been in a secret location for months coming up with really cool maps to torture us. God ahve mercy on me!

You have to think that the GOP will convince Johnson to retire and somehow try to protect Kinzinger with some combination of those districts. They can’t afford to lose Schock or Kinzinger. I know they may not have much say, but they may be willing to lose a seat to keep those 2 as rising stars.

Did anyone else hear Mike Flannery chastise the Brady campaign for “hiding” all summer? (No schedules, no face time, no availablity)
I agree with Jerry’s strategy with that, especially with Plummer, but I guess when Quinn had ZERO campaign all summer, Brady should have made SOME hay …but I agree with Jerry on that 1 …it was a tough call.

I might be crazy, but if I’m Lisa Madigan with the bloodbath over the budget that is going to happen on the state level in the next few years, I think I take the mayor job and be happy to find a niche that I could own for years. 4 years is an eternity in politics.
Comment by Logical Thinker Wednesday, Nov 3, 10 @ 1:01 am
If Quinn pulls this off, the House needs to come in session on Jan 2 and pass the tax increase the Senate passed in ‘09. If they don’t do it then, it’s hard to see how it ever passes. Perhaps Quinn cuts a deal with MJM to be a one-termer before he can get his hands on the revenue.

Someone is going to have to carry the mantle of “anyone but Rahm” from the machine bosses. I think Lisa is the one to do it and she wins without a run-off. How much flak does Rahm catch for the results of last night?
I’m stunned that Quinn won. Absolutely stunned. Wonder how those Brady transition team meetings went for the last 3 weeks? But his win opens up a lot of shuffling of the deck. In 2014, you have the governor seat AND Durbin’s Senate seat. What if Durbin doesn’t run again? A possibility; not a probability though.

The Plummer/Cohen combo ultimately doomed Brady. Plummer put many people in the same akward position they were in when faced with McCain/Palin in ‘08. Cohen gave people the option to vent against everyone. Both resulted in lost peanuts.

If Kirk get’s sworn in as Burris replacement due to the Special Election, then is there a vacancy in the 10th during the lame duck session?
Can Dodl be sworn into the vacancy prior to the election being certified?
If he can be sworn in, does seniority begin to accrue for both of them before their other colleagues are sworn in in January?

When the Campaign Staff … PAID Staff for Bill Brady wake up tomorrow … and they see they blew it by less than a vote a precinct - after getting through a primary like the cat who swallowed the canary …will they be upset they lost it the same way a Dillard crew lost the primary? Or … Will they be upset they just lost it? Why ask this question?
It seems we never learn from history … from years ago … or months ago … and that is why we get a Dem remap for 10 years …
Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Nov 3, 10 @ 2:21 am
Why ask this question?
Because Dillard never opted for a re-count; but will Brady take a pass as well?
Comment by Quinn T. Sential Wednesday, Nov 3, 10 @ 2:23 am
80 precincts … 250 votes = 20,000 votes … at a 60/40 split … all for Brady …4,000 plurality … that is what you are chasing … 4k as your “best case senerio”
Thoughs?
Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Nov 3, 10 @ 2:24 am
Oswego, judging by Cook Counties returns, I don’t see how Brady can even hope for 60/40. This thing is done.
Comment by BigMac Wednesday, Nov 3, 10 @ 2:25 am
I am guessing they will ask for the recount … but if Dillard asks for the recount … and loses… and costs both men money they would need in the general, there was no winning senerio …With Quinn … roll the dice.
I am just making the point … we Repubs … even in the sweetest of victory, never learn from the wins.

Yet, they lost to a strong dem team. Make no mistake, jerry and co. will take this to their grave, their bleeping grave. But, they were always fighting an uphill battle.
why ask this question? i dont’ know, but maybe b/c all of us illinois conservatives are asking why do we do this. That is why you asked. We must face the realization that no complete conservative will ever be chief illinois executive.

1) we can just keep drinking; or,

however, since I don’t know how to field dress a moose, I will stick to the drinking.
