Final guv race results trickle in

** 2:20 a.m. Rich is taking a break between now and the time he needs to write the Subscriber’s edition later this morning. Any one out there up for spending the early morning with the intern?

Boo ya.

The governor’s lead is now at 8,349 as the only precincts not reporting are inside Cook County and the City of Chicago. You may recall from the exit polling released last night that Quinn did quite well in these areas today despite what some previous polls predicted during the last month.

To be specific, we’re looking at 27 precincts in the county and 48 precincts inside the city. Since the Chicago Board of Election’s Web site went down earlier this morning, we don’t know which Chicago precincts are missing. Not even the Quinn campaign staffer I spoke to a few moments ago was sure what parts of the city have not been counted.

* Meanwhile, here’s a quick round-up of some of the early editions…

  1. After 22 hours, I may be around for a little bit. Come on Chicago, finish this so I can go to bed happy.

  2. Race. Is. Over.

It’s only a question of how long Brady will drag it out. It seems unlikely he’ll handle this with as much class as Dillard did during the primary. Dillard didn’t challenge 193 votes. What is Brady’s threshold? Quinn’s lead will only grow with the absentee votes and the remaining Cook precincts.

    Don’t call it a comeback.

  6. “This one has been over for months…”
    71% of precincts reporting
    Updated 9:57 p.m.
    Rosenthal (R) 11,325 60.5%
    Landers (D) 7,384 39.5%

Rosenthal had more than a million bucks spent against him and faced a major dem to republican registered voter disadvantage in his district.

He took a beating through negative mail, radio, and TV.

To dismiss this win as an “eh” just seems kind of insulting to Rosenthal.

  21. I am getting the precincts reported and precincts remaining, and vote totals from the Sun-Times; which is using the AP as a source.

I am guesstimating the vote totals remaining, by using an average of the vote totals/precincts reported = 313, x the # of precincts remaining = 75, to arrive at the 23,475

    Comment by Quinn T. Sential Wednesday, Nov 3, 10 @ 2:57 am

  87. Given the precincts out in the city of Chicago, and the number of them in suburban Cook where Brady will not make up enough ground either, the Quinn margin is going to grow rather than shrink, and there is no amount of military ballots that are going to allow him to make up this ground.

The Fat Lady’s vocal chords have gotten plenty of rest over night and she will be ready to go early in the a.m.

    Comment by Quinn T. Sential Wednesday, Nov 3, 10 @ 4:47 am

  88. I woke up to find things are pretty much where they were six hours ago.

Quinn’s margin seems pretty secure. Whooda thunk it a month ago?

    More furlough days for everybody!!!

  89. …More furlough days for everybody!!!…

Comment by Joe from Joliet Wednesday, Nov 3, 10 @ 5:31 am

  90. So in both top races, the Greens as usual did their inadvertent best to tilt the race to the GOP. Sorry, Greens, I know it wasn’t intentional. Unclear if they cost Alexi the seat or not, but possibly.

However, in what has to be one of the strangest coups of political fortune, it seems Rich’s theory that a prostitute-stabbing, steroids-raging pawnbroker may have sucked up just enough of the protest vote to throw the gubernatorial mansion (and the 2012 remap) to the Dems.

I’m not knocking the obvious turnout effort for Quinn. But, holy cow, if we can figure out who SLC’s voters’ second-choices tended to be, that would be huge (and morbidly hilarious).

Comment by ZC Wednesday, Nov 3, 10 @ 5:50 am

  91. Really too bad for Brady’s transition plan. Especially for Corrections where he had a bunch guys fitting their badges on their belts. Touchdown! Oops. Fumble.

Comment by Tony Wednesday, Nov 3, 10 @ 5:52 am

  92. would you rather have a furlough day or a worthless 401k?

Comment by Foster Brooks Wednesday, Nov 3, 10 @ 5:54 am

  93. I predicted Brady by a comfortable margin. Very happy to be wrong. Hey Lisa Madigan: thanks for handing us senator Mark Kirk.

Comment by lakecountydem Wednesday, Nov 3, 10 @ 6:29 am

  94. Hey Foster- make mine a double! I gotta get to work….

Comment by DuPage Dave Wednesday, Nov 3, 10 @ 6:30 am

  95. Lake County- Don’t blame Lisa, please. She would no doubt have won, but she gets to make the choices about her own life.

Alexi dug his own grave. He was a lackluster candidate at best. Never should have been nominated. All the blame goes to him and the geniuses who guided him through the primary.

Comment by DuPage Dave Wednesday, Nov 3, 10 @ 6:33 am

  96. Big winner last night: Simon Edelman.

Comment by Gregor Wednesday, Nov 3, 10 @ 7:03 am

  97. Another worthless politician from crook county but at least Alexi did not win!

Comment by Joe Blow Wednesday, Nov 3, 10 @ 7:12 am

  98. No, the big winners in this election are the state’s TV stations.

Comment by Deep South Wednesday, Nov 3, 10 @ 7:16 am

  99. I can hear my downstate neighbors muttering that once again Chicago has “stolen” an election.

The truth is that if Bill Brady had come across as a financial conservative but moderate in the social issues he would have won. I have friends who are moderate Republicans who admitted that they were not comfortable voting for Brady because of his stands on abortion in cases of rape and the mother’s health in danger. The issues in regards to religious education in public schools rattled some as well.

Comment by Nearly Normal Wednesday, Nov 3, 10 @ 7:43 am

  100. @Nearly Normal - Brady did his best to hide his incredibly extreme social views and fortunately enough of the truth got out. He is definitely wrong for Illinois. It is scary how close he got. Phew!

Comment by Far Northsider Wednesday, Nov 3, 10 @ 8:12 am

  101. If people are honest with themselves, this race was simple.

Quinn was called a career politician. Brady with 17 years is definitely a career politician.

What has Brady done in that 17 years? Not even he could name anything. Quinn could show his years working on the citizen’s behalf for CUB, his efforts for a sustainable environment, his dedication to the troops, and more.

Quinn had Simon, a well-known name even if she does not have a long political track record. Plummer? No track record and can’t say “education”.

Brady/Plummer are millionaires with Florida houses and Porsches. Quinn/Simon aren’t millionaires and live modest lives. Who do you think most people can relate to?

This is not just a Chicago/Downstate issue. In reality, there were people throughout the state that voted for Quinn and he actually picked up some counties in downstate - something that didn’t happen in the primary.

Now it’s time to quit pointing fingers and actually get down to work!

Comment by Did You Expect A Miracle? Wednesday, Nov 3, 10 @ 8:25 am

  102. Wonder why only 49% of Illinois house district is counted as reported by the sun times as I write this?

Comment by Anonymous Wednesday, Nov 3, 10 @ 8:30 am

  103. “Now it’s time to quit pointing fingers and actually get down to work!”

Amen to that. Can we do bipartisan in this state?

  104. House district 22 I meant

Comment by Anonymous Wednesday, Nov 3, 10 @ 8:31 am

  105. If Lisa is supposed to run every time some jamok gets into a key race, soon she’ll have more jobs than a Bridgeport patronage king. Why should vanity candidates chart the course of her career?

Comment by Way South of the Border Wednesday, Nov 3, 10 @ 8:37 am

  106. ===Wonder why only 49%===

It’s counted. Go to the city and county sites. 100 percent in.

Comment by Rich Miller Wednesday, Nov 3, 10 @ 8:40 am

  107. “Now it’s time to quit pointing fingers and actually get down to work!”

That’s easy for those who don’t have to deal with these jokers. Next 4 years will be a repeat of the last 8. Once again dirty Chicago trumps the state!

Comment by Anonymous Wednesday, Nov 3, 10 @ 8:52 am

  108. So quinn lost in every county but cook and st. clair. Yet many of those put dems back in house and senate. Weird. But not much of a mandate for the governor.

Comment by Anonymous Wednesday, Nov 3, 10 @ 8:57 am

  109. Downstate can say the Chicago Democrats stole another election if they want. The reality is that Brady’s conservative social views cost him enough independents and moderates to lose the election. How else can you explain it when Mark Kirk wins the senate race and garners more votes than Brady?

The downside is that both of the major party candidates were weak. It was a matter of choosing the least objectionable. PQ has not shown he has the ability to effectively govern this state. Yet the majority of voters want to continue down the same road we ahve been on for the last 8 years? OMG!

Comment by southern illinoisan Wednesday, Nov 3, 10 @ 9:03 am

  110. Has anyone done an updated anylsis of how many uncounted votes remain? I.E. - overseas military absentee, etc..

I thought I saw that someone indicated that there are approx 30 thousand votes yet to be counted.

  111. Quinn is toast. With some fresh honey and a sprinkle of cinnamon. Quite tasty indeed.

  112. Fox News called it for Quinn!

Comment by Amalia Wednesday, Nov 3, 10 @ 9:18 am

  113. Republicans can white and moan all they want about Cook County, but the reality is that Chicago exists and it must be dealt with in statewide elections. Ryan knew this. Edgar knew this. Thompson knew this. Your candidates need to make inroads in the city.
