At the Conservative Illinois Policy Institute to which Rauner is a major contributor, Ted Dabrowski said raising the minimum wage does not address the state’s real problem.
“What’s the best way to help those who can’t get jobs? And what’s the best way to create jobs rather than be talking about the minimum wage per se?” Dabrowski said.

Hope you had a good summer. To be clear, our position has not changed on min wage. The more recent comments were in context of Rauner’s blueprint release, not an alteration of our position.

What ought to scare Republicans the most is the recent rallies across the country regarding Ferguson and fast food worker’s fight for a $15 minimum wage.
Quinn v. Rauner is nationalizing very quickly. That is bad, bad news for Rauner. Republicans lose partisan races in Illinois.

I adamantly, adamantly agree the tone is changing, because the attacks are working, because Rauner wears the jacket for them…a pristine Carhartt jacket, but a jacket all the same.

Most people think the fight for $15 mimimum wage for fast food workers is absurd. If you don’t agree, ask some of your friends. If they are being honest with you, they will say it is absurd.
Why would R’s be scared about rallies regarding Ferguson MO?

You know, I was really hoping for one big huge giant gaffe by the Rauner campaign to just completely end this race…. But if I have to settle for two or three small gaffes a day, that’ll be okay. Finality can come on election night.

In the face of considerable media reports to the contrary, I would respectfully disagree. It’s working with people who are already supportive. Making so much of “minimum wage” isn’t where hopeful people are trying to go. Good Jobs is the answer. Good jobs is always the answer.
Don’t have any idea what’s queued up, but this is what I’d do:
“Pat Quinn wants everyone to work for a slightly improved minimum wage and his education policies seem in step with those ambitions. I think we can do a lot better and promise a lot more than that”.
I hope someone’s paying attention. No fee for this nugget. Just run it. We need good jobs, not fewer lousy paying ones.

Missouri’s mimimum wage is currently $7.50 and going to $7.65 in 2015. And IL wants to go to $10.10 or $13 per hour. Hmmm.
Carl, who wants to lower the minimum wage? It is already more than 12% higher in IL than the national rate.

If we raise the minimum wage does that mean all of the McDonald’s will close and move to Missouri or Indiana? I do not see the data that supports the notion that an increase is detrimental to market growth. It should be pointed out that this is not an increase in welfare, these are people that are working for a living. Those that are opposed always make it sound like it is a social welfare give away, it is earned money and you have to work to get it.

I still haven’t been given a good reason why someone who has worked their way to a higher wage should suddenly be at minimum wage because the wage increases supersede their wage.
Let’s say I work for $13/hour. If the minimum wage were increased to $15 (like some want it), I would either be working at $15 (minimum wage) or my company would have to increase wages.
The minimum wage is a NUMBER. Either way, it is STILL the minimum wage.
Want to help people? Create an economy that allows people to climb the ladder to better jobs. Introduce a higher EITC or a negative tax. Reduce cost of living and limit inflation.
How on earth is inducing inflation ever going to help the poor?
Liberals, yet again, either naively miss the point or complacently trap impoverished people into poverty, making them dependent on the government.

until people are able to find better jobs, better-paying jobs, they are working minimum wage. and they have to survive off minimum wage.
how is keeping minimum wage the same, or hey why not lower it to $5 a hour, going to help the poor either? wouldn’t that also make them more dependent on the government, but at least rich people wouldn’t have to worry about inflation and their ROI?

Stop arguing the minimum wage. That is a loser. It is an idol of belief for many people. Professors are still claiming to new students that it has magical powers.
So arguing over it is a loser.
It is Quinn’s Property Tax Freeze. Like Rauner’s Freeze, it makes about as much sense to the opposing side of the campaign. These are dog whistles only partisans can hear. It makes no economic sense, but it does arouse the true believers. In my experience, every true believe really cares about home owners and entry level workers. Both parties mean well.
Don’t argue. Just ask supporters why and then do follow up questions.

Less than 2.5% of American workers make minimum wage so I don’t think Quinn wants “everyone” to earn it.
Gallup has 76% of Americans favoring a raise in the national minimum wage.
Red/Blue, GOP/Dem/Ind., rich/poor, north/south, there’s not many issues in this country that can post 76%.
If Illinois Republicans are dumb enough to go along with fringe-players like Tillman and oppose it on the basis of comic-book “economics,” they’ll get what they deserve. And hard.

Right. As are grocery bills, rent, etc. just numbers.
To recap: an increased minimum wage helps workers. A wage which helps them support their families. This in turn reduces the need for goverrnt programs. This helps people get out of poverty.
Conservatives oppose this common sense approach, & progressives support it.

Sling, don’t saddle me with Tillman. If you asked most people, you could get nearly 100% to spend someone else’s money.
Do you buy at all the argument that raising it, especially raising it significantly, wouldn’t reduce some jobs for the very people you’re trying to help? Many employers may be faced with the choice of reducing their workforce by some % to make up for paying the others more. You cite (I’m sure correctly) 2.5% of the people work for this wage, some no doubt happily, as money isn’t their prime motivation in every case. 76% may have an opinion upon this because they were asked, but closer to that 2.5% are the ones who would be motivated to vote for this reason and perhaps this reason alone. That might be enough, right? But couldn’t a similar number be motivated the other way because of what it may do to small businesses or people trying to or thinking about starting one? This issue comes up every so often. It’s taking a lot of ink lately. Will it in two months? Time will tell. If it does, will it make a difference, again time will tell.

The 13 states that raised their minimum wages this year are reporting faster job growth, so that flies in the face of this talking point.

This explodes the myth that giving low-paid workers a minimum wage increase tries to equalize them with wealthy people–the old social engineering nonsense.
Gov. Christie I believe really told wealthy donors when he was in Chicago earlier this year that people supporting a minimum wage increase want to make the rich and poor equal (something like that).
That’s what these victims want to hear, with their cries of class warfare.
I hope the minimum wage issue yields some political benefits. I’m not sure if I support the $15 dollar/hour minimum wage, but I do support a minimum wage increase and unionization for fast food workers.
