Court documents reveal Rauner threatened an executive after firing her for not laying off workers to maximize profits.
NBC news reported Rauner said:
CAROL MARIN: “Quote. I will bury her. I will bankrupt her with legal fees. I don’t know if she has a family or not but if she does she better think twice about this.”

Cue Republicans screaming CLASS WARFARE in 3, 2, 1 . . .
Yes, they are going to yell about this ad, but the rest of us are going to think the contrast between millionaire and cutting benefits for poor and middle class is very effective.
I thought it was very effective. I give it an A.
One more note — this may also help Quinn, since even though it makes no reference to that race, it may well remind people of that rich guy cutting things for poor theme.

This is probably a different post but I thought quinn dominated the debate last night and the moderators were superb. Questions like which members of the opposing party in the legislature were well informed and unlike the fluff ABC-7 and the chicago stations who see these things more as marketing opportunities pull it was a button down issues focused wonkish debate. Rauner looked stiff , never really punched back and on a few questions had I don’t know as a response on issues and questions that weren’t that esoteric.

And Rauner pollsters stick with the PQ is a corrupt Chicago machine politician. PQ’s media team is making a strong pitch to go national with Clinton in 2016. Their positive and negative ads have been much better than Rauner. Quinn’s play Major League, Rauner is playing AA.

Hard to find any fault in the production, script, delivery. And it’s directly to the point. Really well done.
Compare it to today’s Rauner attack ad, which is full of sound and fury.
Will work because it appeals more to emotion and personal values than to policy.

The “did he really think no one would find out” line has been quite versatile for this campaign and I’ve now seen it often enough that I was anticipating it at the end. Whoever came up with that theme probably deserves a jelly donut.

Should’ve included some quotes from the judge dismissing the case, but that would have been too fair.
Carol Marin was always in the tank for the Dems but good enough to seem unbiased. But desperate times call for desperate measures and a fellow member of the indignant liberal media/faux reformer alliance named Quinn is in big trouble so we get this trash. This was Jerry Springer material and Marin was the one that produced it. Shameful journalistic ethics.

Absolutely.
Carol’s voice conveys the authority of God’s older sister. It can’t help but make the ad’s message implicitly credible. I don’t think it would be half as effective without the sound of her voice.

Rauner is starting to make George Ryan look like a softy. George was able to pull off the lovable grandfather type with the public (before his troubles) even though he was actually tough as nails. It doesn’t look like Bruce will ever have a chance to be seen in the same light.

Another great thing about this ad is that Quinn’s camp doesn’t even accuse him of anything or call him a bully or anything except for the final tag line. They just laid it out there for the public to make up their own mind.

This is a sworn depo. Do you think the person quoted wants to say they…lied…in a sworn depo?
No way.
So it will reinforce the quote’s truth, hurting even more.
This “box” the Ad had Rauner in? The “it’s a lie, ask!”…well, if Carol Marin says, “So we asked if they lied in their deposition…”
This Ad is 100 times better than just the :30 second hit, because if Rauner goes after the credibility…the “hurt” does more than leave this very ugly mark.

One person, one story, clear script. They were able to fit the “after firing her for not laying off workers” line without it getting clunky.
Loved the pic of the deposition and the NBC and Sun times to provide credibility to the claims.
Just to be picky, I wasn’t a fan of the voiceover. I’d have gone with a more abusive sounding man.
But wow, this is a terrific hit.

Rauner brings up one of the key differences between “us” and “them”. The .01 percent can afford to keep cases in court forever without concern about winning. They know the other guy can’t afford to pay attorneys forever.
While the legal system is supposed to be fair to both sides, it really favors the side with the most money. Whether this concerns individuals or businesses the side with the bigger bank account has the advantage.
This is his trump card. He knows that he doesn’t have to prove his side is right, or be concerned that the woman in question has truth on her side. He knows he can ruin her financially and that’s equivalent to winning.
As to the ad- it seems pretty effective to me, but then I can’t stand Rauner or his ilk so I’m not an impartial judge.

Yellow press journalism by Carol Marin and the Chicago Sun-Times on a story shopped by a Democratic organization last week justifying a vicious hit piece television ad. These were the charges that were dismissed out in a summary judgment. November 4th can’t come soon enough.
And we wonder why Illinois politics continues to be the laughing stock of the nation?

i’ve never been a fan of the billionaire bruce moniker, so this ad explains it better with a real life situation.
the typical rich, greedy corporate exec doing everything in his power to maximize profits at the expense of others and even their families. He is not satisfied with firing someone, but “burying” them just because they had the gall to stand take a stand.
Makes me think how he would react to GA members who won’t take his side on a vote. yikes.

This Ad was so simple to see from Jump Street, especially the way NBC 5 framed it, how it wouldn’t be seen or used would as an Ad have surprised me more.
Quinnsters can pay me in 1 cannoli, Rauner’s Crew would have to offer a cannoli plant - for equality of assets and all.

Just because the case was dismissed, DOES NOT MEAN that Brucie didn’t threaten the woman with financial ruin. He did, in fact threaten to ‘bury’ her, and cause her to be blackballed.

With all due respect, unless you have, “granted summary judgment” is absolutely meaningless.
If you keep referencing the MSJ as a means of shoring up failing support, be my guest. However, if you intend it as meaningful argument, you should drop it because any 1L can tell you that there are hundreds of reasons for granting MSJ.

Black’s Law Dictionary defines Summary Judgment as follows: A quick decision of a court based on briefings and affidavits where material facts are not disputed or where the court’s opinion is used for judgment
The operative phrase hearing being: “material facts are not disputed.”

At all. It is very difficult to effectively counter an ad like this.
All you can do is try to reveal the ad as false, which @OW points out the difficulties of doing, or try to run something even more negative and bloody against the other guy.
The downward spiral that is bloodtober now picks up speed. First one to the bottom wins.

To the validity,
Getting caught in the weeds of “payouts”, “summary judgements”, any and all of the wonky legalese of what happened or didn’t.
Stop.
Just stop for one second…ask yourselves;
“The sworn deposition is what the ‘hit’ is all about. Attacking the truth of the words, and the person who swore to tell the truth is the fact, and only fact needed, that hold the water for validity”
So, who is going to be FIRST, to say the person lied in the deposition, and further, do you want a Carol Marin or someone like her do a Jeri Ryan, ask that question and they say they stand by their depo, in the face of perjury?
The Ad is genius. It covers it all, it’s insulated as fact, that if Rauner calls the statement false, the media feeding frenzy begins, “get that person and ask if they lied”
Utter. Genius.

Button down shirt with strip tie — look has been out (even on north shore) for 30 years.

And then PQ whacks him over the woman he tried to fire.
The check grabbers at Rauner HQ will have a long weekend. Hopefully the are buying the TV time now so the commission will be banked.

Though you might also be able to pull off a “taking the high road” response if you stick to it very strictly through the home stretch.
Return to the roots. Go back to focusing on jobs, economy, taxes, ineffective leadership, and so on. Use this as an example of the Obama quote == When you have nothing to run on, you try to paint the other guy as someone to run from. == Use the bloodiness of the ad against itself, and go back to talking about == real == issues. Steer things back towards a referendum on your opponent’s performance instead of a choice between the both of you.
It is a gamble, maybe even a big one, and taking it depends on the confidence you have in your ideas; the discipline and thick skin of your candidate and campaign team; whether you think you have enough time left to effectively take that gamble; and how empty the cupboard is of grenades to lob back at damaging stuff like this during the final month.
You could wind up defenseless and gored by your opponent’s knife, or wind up sidestepping their attacks and running cleanly past them to the finish line as they continue swiping knives at the thin air where you used to be standing.
My guess is it turns into a knife fight.

Here go read it. I’m no lawyer and couldn’t plow through the whole thing, but what I saw were counts of fiduciary misconduct that were dismissed for several reasons, most of which were that the plaintiffs couldn’t sell the case to the judge. Of course that has nothing to do with the validitiy fo that quote.

That doesn’t mean that the “bury her” quote is not word for word what Rauner said.

The best you can do is….
….oh wait, just because Oswego Willy is helping Quinn out doesn’t mean I have to give Rauner help.
One in 10 voters is apparently undecided. This ad might make a difference.
At the least, it makes a big, last minute offensive by Rauner difficult.
Quinn has a slight lead, the polls suggest, and this ad is as much defense against the Two-minute drill as it is offense.
Blitz, blitz, blitz.

This ad won’t change any minds of voters who have already decided for Rauner. If they haven’t figured him out by now, they’re never going to. But it will change the minds of some independents.
BTW, I thought Quinn held up well in the debate last night while Rauner was vague and tried the presidential debate tactic of smiling and shaking his head. I don’t think it will play here.

@Bill White - It was a good comment, snark or not. If they were relying on the NRI hearings to provide quotes for their version of this ad, it didn’t happen.
Unless some lucky assistance arrives from the other investigations, any new or helpful info from the NRI stuff is not likely to come before Novermber 4. What they have now is very similar to what they already had, no new fireworks.

Every once in a while, an ad emerges in a political campaign that is absolutely lethal. My gut feeling is that this is one of those. At the very least, this shifts the momentum decisively to Quinn.

Bill White It wouldn’t be that vicious, but just very frustrating for Rauner. Threats don’t work against the Speaker or it would have been tried before. He always has the upper hand. This attack ad shows what Bruce Rauner truly is. Simply put he’s a bully. He didn’t just want to fire her, he wanted to embarrass and humiliate her. Just rub her nose in it for good measure because she dared to tell him no. A mean, cold as ice bully. Be you a man or woman, your fair game. That’s not tough, that’s just mean.

You are exactly right. It wouldn’t be that vicious because Bruce Rauner would be silly putty in the hands of Madigan and Cullerton.
But it’s all hypothetical because Quinn is looking really strong right now.
I don’t see how Rauner can recover from the complete evaporation of the NRI angle, this video ad and the numbers don’t add up video ad.
The core Anybody But Quinn camp will get Rauner a decent showing but I don’t see him reversing the momentum going forward.

As for the Quinn media team, remember Joe Slade White did Clinton ‘96.
The quality of his work is not a shock.
A member of Team Quinn did refer to Hillary as the next President, which seems a bit premature, but I chalk it up to excitement and nothing else. Hanging with the
Clinton’s has a certain intoxicating quality.

I think this ad is at least partly good for Rauner. It reenforces that he’s gonna be tough on people who get in his way.
That’s what he’s promising to do.
But the bit about going after people’s families?
That’s not being tough. That’s a kind of ruthlessness that crosses a line. It’s threatening to shoot civilians.

It’s bad day for Rauner, but I have to disagree with you guys about the Marin “voice of God’s older sister” thing. I’ve thought from the first time I heard this ad this morning that using a female voice to recreate the Rauner statement “threatening” a female exec was a significant mis-step. As to credibility, yeah she’s a seasoned and respected reporter but Carol Marin is not a household name in most of IL outside Chicago and collars.

It’s a vague weak ad. If Rauner wants to respond he could use it to say when his employees won’t do their jobs he will get rid of them unlike Quinn who is aware of hundreds of illegal hires in his departments but keeps the employees and their managers.
I imagine the exec was suing because she was fired for not following orders, right?

And what is ‘this?’ The threat of a lawsuit that ultimately went nowhere, with the meat tossed by a judge and the rest gotten rid of with, in the scheme of things, go-away money. Which doesn’t take away from the ad’s effectiveness–OW and Rich are right. Still, there’s an argument to be made that BR doesn’t play with kid gloves, which isn’t necessarily a bad quality in a governor.
As Rich says, I’m just sayin.

She was already fired. He threatened her and her family after the fact.
Like Louis, sit this one out. You’re bringing nothing to the table and you don’t know the play, if there is one.
But Rauner will have to respond. He can’t leave this hanging. It will be the end of him.
His crew has been pretty quick to respond up to now. But crickets on this today.
It’s going to run all weekend. They better have something up and good to go. Because if they don’t, there’s no point doing anything else.

You’re not grappling with the actual issue here.

That being said, I doubt that Marin’s voice is really that big of a deal (even inside Chicago, how many people would positively ID that?). But the point is to have someone outside the campaign structure read that quote.
