* Political campaigns rarely advertise in newspapers, but Susan Crown, Lynn and Jim Harris, Mary Ittelson, Gerri and David Kahnweiler, Diana Rauner and Corinne Wood paid for a big ad in the Chicago Tribune today…
To Supporters of Reproductive Rights,
We write as longtime supporters of reproductive rights to celebrate the fact that in this election both candidates for Illinois Governor are pro-choice
.
Bruce Rauner battled through a close Republican primary with a clear, consistent position on reproductive rights:It’s a decision that should be made by a woman with her physician, her family or minister, not by government.”
– NBC Chicago Republican Primary Debate, 3/4/14The only difference between Bruce Rauner and Pat Quinn on reproductive rights is the issue of parental notification. Pat Quinn opposes parental notification, and Bruce Rauner favors it. Voters can decide for themselves whether they stand with Rauner or Quinn on parental notification, while knowing that both candidates have promised to protect the current status of reproductive rights in our state.
Supporters of reproductive rights should be thrilled that both the Republican and Democratic candidates are pro-choice. Having a pro-choice Republican candidate is a major advance for our issue here in Illinois and nationwide.
Bipartisan support for reproductive rights is essential to their survival, and we hope Illinois sets an example for other states
Reproductive rights, access to women’s health needs, and women’s rights will not have to be contested in this election. This is as it should be: women’s rights should not be a partisan issue. Voters will be free to select their candidate based on the many other important issues facing our state.
The statement is signed by dozens of people. Read the list by clicking here.

Meh.

Subtext: Bruce isn’t really engaged in a war on women just because he threatened a female executive and her family.
But I thought Diana Rauner said her husband didn’t care about the social issues, but here she is taking out an ad on the social issues. Kinda sad seeing the desperation as the campaign wheels come off.

Bruce Rauner will spend money telling you he’s a regular guy…. He’s not.
Bruce Rauner will spend money telling you he’s an outsider…. Don’t all political outsiders spend over $100K on Richie Daley and Rahm Emanuel?
But Bruce Rauner may actually favor abortion rights… Yes, he chose an anti-abortion zealot to be his Lieutenant Governor nominee, but that’s just pandering to the rubes.
He’s very serious when he’s pandering to pro-choice women.

Well, they just wrote Chad Grimm’s first commercial for him. Will he have the cash to air it?
Comment by SAP Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 2:21 pm
There is only one pro-life candidate in the race. I wonder if the someone will give the voters downstate a heads-up? I’m thinking so.
Comment by Snucka Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 2:25 pm
SAP, I was thinking something similar. This looks like a huge gift to the union who’s kicking in money to help Grimm and its socially conservative members. The timing is perfect.
Comment by Grandson of Man Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 2:29 pm
Parental notification is a huge difference. Many girls/young women are terrified (with good reason) to tell their parents of being pregnant. There is only one truly pro-choice candidate in the race.

Chum for the social conservatives.

I think the big winner here is the Trib. They sold a full page ad!
Comment by Pot calling kettle Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 2:43 pm
What’s the point? These guys act like they’re Nobel laureates putting some ad in the Sunday NYT on an issue of international interest.
They’re not and it isn’t.
Comment by Wordslinger Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 2:45 pm
He is choosing pro-choice voters over his conservative pro-life Republican base.
This is a gamble with very poor odds.

Chad Grimm besides having the best name for a libertarian EVER just went up two points. Some Social conservatives are a mean bunch. They’d rather tear down the temple than allow any apostasy. “You’re either with us or against us” should be their motto.
Does it buy Rauner any votes from moderate women? Probably a few. Probably not as many as it may cost him.
When asked what qualities he most wanted in his generals Napoleon didn’t talk about bravery or tactical skills. He mentioned the word “Luck”.
Pat Quinn may be the most persistent and lucky politician on the scene today. Rauner strikes me as Oberweis without the tasty ice cream. If he loses I know GOP consultants are praying that he keeps running and running and running. Rauner and Oberweis the Energizer Bunnies of Deep Pocketed GOP candidates.
Comment by IrishPirate Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 2:52 pm
I am not sure why they are spending so much to tout him as a social liberal. It’s not like he can out-liberal Quinn on reproductive or gay rights. I assume that their polling is showing a gender gap but don’t they risk turning the hard core social conservative away, thus depressing their real core base?
Comment by tominchicago Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 2:54 pm
===thus depressing their real core base? ===
The most competitive statewide campaigns are fought over independent suburban women. It’s been that way here since at least 1990.
Comment by Rich Miller Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 2:56 pm
Maybe the battle is suburban women but I think he has been gambling trying to keep the conservatives with him. He just wrote them off and I think it is a very desperate play.
Maybe the gun control ad will be next.
Comment by Siriusly Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 3:00 pm
And Corrine Wood is back coming all out for Bruce. Brilliant. That’ll get people of either gender to change their votes, I’m sure…

I know a lot more left wing Democrates who force everyone to agree on every issue and are far more intolerant of different views then conservatives.
Also, Nyberg being Pro-life does not make a person a zealot. It looks like you are the zealot with all of you hostility to pro life people. People like you are why I left the Democratic Party but I am not a Republican either and after this have no reason to vote for Rauner.
I already was going to hold my nose and vote for Quinn unless his Spokeswoman says something hostile about Pro-life people again.
I am sure that many of you pro-choice people would not vote for people who keep on deionizing you so don’t be shocked when we Pro-life people don’t vote for people who keep demonizing us.

Did Slip and Sue sign it?
Thought they were Co-Governors, one in the same, Slip and Sue is Bruce, and Bruce is Slip and Sue…

Will Phyllis Schlafly be voting Libertarian? LOL
Comment by Ducky LaMoore Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 3:34 pm
Every dime that Rauner spends trying to convince voters this election is not about social issues convinces voters this election is about social issues.
It’s like telling people not to think of pink elephants.
Who is in charge of messaging for this campaign?
Apparently not Oswego Willy.
Comment by Yellow Dog Democrat Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 3:55 pm
My favorite part, other than the ad being some amateur shot in the dark, is it being paid for by the objective wife and billionaire Crown. Bruce brags he never even ran for student council. Maybe he should have and learned something about elections.

Great point O.W….where is the Running-Mate-Who-Is-Seen-And-Not-Heard?!?!
Comment by Mary Sunshine Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 4:18 pm
For those voters who are pro-choice I see Rauner as the second best candidate. Rauner and his wife have stated that he has a financial and education agenda and no social agenda. Add to that his position on the issue of parental notification and the better choice for the single issue pro-choice voter is Quinn.
At least the Tribune was able to sell an ad (which is a positive for them).
Comment by Hit or Miss Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 4:21 pm
Anyone paying attention to the Dold Race? This is being debated hotly there and perhaps a few other places. They read the Trib up there, don’t they? Evelyn is pro-life. I am pro-life. A lot of people who will vote for Rauner are pro-life. There are a lot of pro-choice people who support Parental Notice and oppose Late Term abortions. Lots of layers on that onion. Maybe pro lifers are for the guy who will lessen the number of abortions with better opportunities in education and jobs. Grimm will get what he deserves from both sides. We’ll see what that is.
I predict no votes will cost more than Grimm’s with a little assist from his pals who absolutely don’t believe in a single thing he stands for. Clever. maybe. Too clever. I sure hope so.

=== Evelyn is pro-life.===
Slip and Sue is Bruce Rauner, and Rauner is Slip and Sue. Slip and Sue said so. So she’s not pro-life anymore?
===Maybe pro lifers are for the guy who will lessen the number of abortions with better opportunities in education and jobs.===
Wha? Wha?
So jobs stop abortions?
You may to do a re-think on that.

“I am not telling you which party or which candidates to vote for or against. What I am saying is that you need to think and pray very carefully about your vote, because a vote for a candidate who promotes actions or behaviors that are intrinsically evil and gravely sinful makes you morally complicit and places the eternal salvation of your own soul in serious jeopardy.” Bishop T. Paprocki 9/2012
Kinda puts a downer on the Rauner/Catholic vote–at least in the Springfield Diocese…Good News, though, as Catholics can vote with clear conscious for Grimm.

- YDD -,
It’s fun just seeing them try the messaging that doesn’t make sense to their narrative, and then justify why they need to say it.
Wouldn’t be my first choice in messaging, but I haven’t been successful at everything I have ever done!
Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 5:18 pm
I’m not at all sanguine about Sanguinetti so this ad is baloney cause the second on their ticket wants to criminalize abortion.
Note to D.Rauner, I guess it is all about the social agenda so time for my side to bring it about the Lt. Guv. candidate cause if someone is pro choice and they vote for Bruce and Evelyn, they are an idiot.

I think people are upset that they didn’t make good decisions for themselves and their own future, that’s why they are jealous of other peoples money. And as a mother I think its good to know when a young girl is risking their lives, the girls may not like it, but I’m all for it.
Comment by Anonymous Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 5:58 pm
I’d hazard at least a hundred people read the ad.
Comment by Bill F. Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 6:29 pm
@Anonymous 5:58 you make no sense whatsoever on the money statement. but as for girls risking their lives, your daughter may talk to you, but the daughter of a man who raped her does not need to consult her parents. she needs to seek help elsewhere and parental notification is a trap for her.
Comment by Amalia Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 6:51 pm
But Kyle McCarter keeps telling everyone down here Bruce is pro-life.
Comment by Highland, IL Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 7:49 pm
Geez. No wonder the downstate GOP hasn’t been moving heaven and earth for Brucie. For Quinn’s sake I hope someone allied with him gets this out there downstate. It will damper downstate GOP enthusiasm for Rauner–and turnout–even more especially in places without close congressional or legislative races like eastern and southeastern Illinois.
