* Bruce and Diana Rauner appear together in a new, positive TV ad…
* Script…
Diana: We knew the false attacks would get ugly.
Bruce: But Illinois is worth it.
Diana: Bruce isn’t a typical politician.
Bruce: I just want to save our state.
Diana: Bruce doesn’t owe anybody anything and that scares people in power.
Bruce: I’m not running because I want a political career.
Diana: Bruce will make the tough decisions to create jobs and bring back Illinois.
Bruce: Democrat or Republican, I’ll work with everyone to turn our state around.
Diana: And that’s what this election is all about.
Voiceover: Bruce Rauner. Shake up Springfield. Bring back Illinois.
As a Raunerite said to me earlier today, “Compare our ads to his, who do you think is winning?”

Nice cameo in Diana’s ad, Bruce

Conventional ad for the finish of a campaign. B-.
Comment by Under Further Review Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:23 am
Like the ad, but people have been hearing he’s going to crush the folks in Springfield, he’s going to find their weakness.
How is that working together?
Comment by DuPage Bard Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:24 am
Great ad!!!! Love the positive nature. But I’m already a Rauner supporter, so…
Comment by Anon Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:24 am
Russ Stewart’s article said Bruce was the one coming up with all the ads and there’s no one in the campaign telling him no.
This ad makes me think Russ is on to something.
Comment by Anonymous Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:25 am
It seemed to me that the “we knew the false attack ads would get ugly”… “but Illinois is worth it” implies they are the ones doing it, which made me laugh. Also, if you want a positive Rauner ad, its probably best just to let Diana do it…
Comment by Ducky LaMoore Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:25 am
We compared PQ is winning Mitt is out of gas….just hoping to bamboozle a few voters…problem is we got him figured out…rentals (i.e. credit union, GOPies) did not come through, missteps about tax hikes and social issues caught, Sun Times scandal sinks the ship.
And all he wanted was a win to allow him to claim a blue state victory to springboard to the presidency in ‘16.
Comment by circularfiringsquad Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:27 am
Rauner will win Sangamon County, imo. So that speaks to how Rauner will work with Springfield.
Yep, guess who is in the lead.
Comment by anon Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:27 am
Bland. Not inspired to take time out of my day to vote for him. I grade it C+.
Comment by Jose Abreu's next homer Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:28 am
” B-, C+”
Why?
Feels more like, “ignore the Ads about me, and vote for me”
No theme. No reason on the positive close. Still “running against everyone.”
I questioned how Rauner closes, if closing is Bruce and the “prop” Diana saying “Negatives are bad, people afraid of Bruce, vote for Bruce”…
…that ain’t an effective close, it’s hopefully having the last word in an argument Rauner and his Crew never engaged in.
Meh. “B-, C+”
Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:28 am

Nice ad, somewhat effective … but really hard to reconcile the “… I’ll work with everyone …” after a year of attacks on almost everyone.
Comment by RNUG Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:30 am
Does he always interrupt his wife like that?
Comment by PublicServant Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:30 am
His campaign has essentially started saying,
“Look, we know some of you don’t like us… but you’re going to see we’re not all that bad.”
Aside from Diana Rauner being generally robotic and unappealing, this ad is smart and effective. And it pains me to say it.
It’s like the last stage of Stockholm Syndrome for any Illinoisan that watches TV.
Comment by North Shore Joe Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:31 am
I think you close yourself. You’re the one on the ballot. I don’t understand the benefit of his wife doing most of the talking here.
Different. Never seen that before.
Comment by Wordslinger Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:31 am
Rauner doesn’t want to shake up Illinois he wants to “shake down Illinois” that is what he has done in all his private sector ventures and made millions for himself–when you’re a billionaire nobody owns you can just afford to buy a bunch of folks

Am I the only person who is concerned about the clear conflict of interest involved in the head of Ounce of Prevention making campaign ads for a gubernatorial candidate — given that her agency gets MILLIONS of dollars from the State? This seems really fishy to me.

Suspect internal polls show he needs more “suburban mom” support. Better to let her make the appeal.
Comment by RNUG Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:35 am
Glad - Wordslinger - said it.
Closing with Diana reminds me Bruce can’t close this “sale” as Bruce Rauner.
Bruce is running with Slip and Sue, but the prop Diana is needed to make a sale.
Shows a “weakness” as a stand alone Bruce.
Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:35 am
Meh. It’s ok. I think it accomplishes what it’s intended to - wrap things up by showing that Bruce Rauner isn’t the bad guy he’s been made out to be.
Comment by Demoralized Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:36 am
Have not heard a word disputing these “false attacks”. Did you own the companies or not? Did you say those things about a female executive and her family or not? If that is how you run your companies how are we supposed to trust you with our state?

Where are the employees and business associates who would vouch for Rauner, after all those years in business? Rauner’s falling back on his wife again to speak for him. Is there no one else?
Rauner is pandering in regards to being willing to work with Democratic politicians, specifically the leaders. Aren’t there TV ads running now, trashing Madigan and others for years of corruption? Didn’t he say recently that he wants to figuratively break arms? He’s now all kumba ya with the insiders?
Rauner should have started his campaign with this tone. It might still work for him, but it seems to be very late.
I rate it a P for pandering.
Comment by Grandson of Man Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:37 am
Is it Rauner’s position that the attacks on him have all been false?
That’s kinda worrisome.
Comment by Carl Nyberg Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:38 am
I’d love to see a response ad featuring Ann Liston and Dave McKinney next to each other on a couch, similar set-up, talking about what a heartless, vindictive person Rauner is, how his campaign implicitly believes a man should be punished for his wife’s independent career, etc. etc.
Comment by Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:39 am
Found it ironic that his best spokesperson by far in this campaign has been a Democratic family member.
Too bad he couldn’t come up with a better positive closer based on his business experience. is there really nothing positive there, beyond making big money for himself?
Liked the ad. B-
Stood up when he stated a new line “I am not running because I want a political career.”
He doesn’t want anybody to realize that he plans to run for national office — yet.
Comment by walker Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:39 am
Everyone has to admit that Rauner selected a running mate who brought nothing to the ticket.
Comment by Under Further Review Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:40 am
Awful. Malpractice. Terrible.
You use “I” or “Bruce” nine times in your closing ad?
Winning campaigns are about the voters, not about yourself.
I give it an ‘E’ for ‘egomaniac.’
Comment by Yellow Dog Democrat Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:41 am
With the kind of money he’s been throwing around, Bruce should have multiple closing ads.
Comment by Team Sleep Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:41 am
Hard to attack the “accusations” and negativity when you have been at it as hard (at least) as your opponent and calling everyone and their brother corrupt. Mrs. Rauner is no more believable than her husband, particularly when claiming to be a Democrat but donating generously to Republican candidates in the past.
The ad is a C, at best.
Comment by JS Mill Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:42 am
His wife does most of the talking because Bruce doesn’t have anything substantial to offer us on HOW he will be an effective leader, exactly WHAT he’ll do to turn this state around. But, he’ll work with everyone and shake up Springfield?
Mixed messages don’t work.
Comment by Wensicia Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:42 am
Lord, I hate this ad. It looks like We Both Reached for the Gun from Chicago - all it’s missing is Bruce sitting on Diana’s knee. She appears to actually have the ideas, and Bruce just goes, ‘Uh, yup!” to each one.
Well, at least it pleases me to know that the last thing voters will see of Rauner is him nodding like a doofus.
(His Ebola nonsense may have gotten me a little angry today, but honestly this does absolutely nothing for me.)
Comment by haverford Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:43 am
+Everyone has to admit that Rauner selected a running mate who brought nothing to the ticket.+
And Vallas has been the difference for Quinn? Both have been kept under the radar.
As to the ad, solid single. But have to think the Rauner camp has one more item to bring up in the next week.
Comment by Bogey Golfer Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:45 am
I know Diana Rauner has been in a couple of spots, but unlike Bruce, she hasnt been in the newspapers and on the TV newscasts every day for months.
She’s the first thing you see in the spot. Are you confident people know who she is and why she’s talking?
If you’re going to “save” the state, make the case yourself, messiah.
Comment by Wordslinger Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:45 am
Did I blink and miss the part where we were told about the business he grew and middle class jobs he created?
Comment by Aldyth Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:46 am
I think it’s a solid B. She clearly enjoys doing these, and it can’t hurt with suburban women.
I will never understand why there were not commercials touting the positive aspects of GTCR and his business ventures. They had to know this stuff was coming, and why they weren’t ready with those in the can is strange to me.
Comment by LincolnLounger Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:48 am
On the whole “compare our ads to his” comment… It’s clear they believe they are winning. They also thought they’d win the primary in a landslide. It is possible to be consistently wrong. We’ll see…
Comment by CD Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:51 am
Rauner’s whole campaign has been a mirror image of Scott’s 2011 run in FL.
Remember Rick Scott never appeared in his own commercials(his mother Ester did!) and he burned through $75 million of his own money in the process, roughly $29 per vote.
Comment by Anonymous Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 10:52 am

I just don’t see how this “I am Illinois’ messiah” pitch resonates. He comes off as an ego-maniacal jerk. Plus, I think that the Illinois are too cynical to believe that anyone running for office is not doing it for themselves.

I was told that the Quinn campaign research showed that he was hampered by not having a wife to validate the good and honest guy persona they want to project. Quinn’s eyes and voice make him come across as a flake when women want stability and maturity in male elected officials.
Comment by In a Minute Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 11:08 am
Decent ad. If the Rauner campaign is trying to play to the ladies, he should put some video out there on the Waukegan school district strike going on since Oct 2. This is not a wealthy area, and it appears the union is over-reaching. If played right, an ad could have impact on working mothers with kids.
Comment by Cook County Commoner Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 11:09 am
Seriously. Where is the Better Government Association on this? The head of a non-profit that receives >$10 million a year from the State appearing in political ads? Aren’t those groups supposed to be non-partisan? This is a violation of 501c3 regulations, and I demand an investigation!

Waiting for PQ to counter this ad with an ad of his own showing his direct conversation with his ever-trusted Betsy.
Comment by Jake From Elwood Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 11:19 am
Yeah, whatever gang. Here you go. A strong campaign is one that ends where it starts which a positive mission statement theme, not still trying to ignite fires everywhere.
This ad is more than good enough. Now, run the daylights out of it and reassure the people of the state our problems are fixable with the right person in place. It’s rational. That’s where you want to be at the end. No more crap. Just play the river card and lay down the chips if you’re still in.
Run it 5 times an hour everywhere for the next week.

== Rauner’s pollster is so good that he had Rauner up 18 on Primary day this year… he won by 3. His universes my be sliiiiightly off. ==
The primary was close because of the union crossover votes for Dillard. Rauner probably did have a substantial lead among traditional Republican primary voters.
Comment by Illannoyed Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 11:20 am
Oh my…Bruce is running to “save our state.” But he needs better visuals in the TV AD to convey his message. Bruce should be astride a white horse, with his wife reaching for a lift up behind him as the announcer says, “He saved one damsel in distress and he can save our state too.”
What is it about wealthy businessmen that make them think their abilities are so great that they can “save our state?” I don’t think the ad shows much empathy and Bruce has yet to master a key political trait—that is—being able to fake sincerity. Grade D
Comment by Louis Howe Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 11:22 am

Comment by Bluefish Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 11:32 am
An honest ad would have taken a line or two from Mark Brown’s article in today’s S.T’s.
“The only reason why I am part of this campaign is because I’ve made A LOT of money. But don’t ask me to provide any details because if things went wrong, I wasn’t aware or part of it. I can’t tell you how many jobs I created or what a great manager I have been. My employees can’t vouch for me.
I have not laid out a clear plan for anything I plan to do as governor. I promise to ’shake things up,’ I’m going to take Madigan down, but I will work with everyone.
I would never hire someone to run one of my companies that does not have any experience, but I want you to vote for me even though I have never held office.
In closing, my wife likes me so I hope you will vote for me.”
Comment by Anonymous Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 11:37 am

If Rauner is dictating what the ad strategy is to his crew, the retired police offer and former union head ads make more sense. Both would have been great ideas if Rauner had won the primary by 17 points. It feels as if they never really adapted their strategy after the primary.
Comment by Urban Girl Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 12:09 pm
Rauner would have been much wiser to select a running mate similar to Diana rather than Slip & Sue. She is infinitely more effective. Possibly a turning point in the campaign if he loses.
Comment by Stones Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 12:20 pm
The extensive use of Diana Rauner who is also still the unpaid President of the Ounce of Prevention Fund has shook up some in the not for profit world in Chicago. No one expected her to not support her husband, but really no one expected her to become the biggest booster for Bruce either.
Normally because of all the restrictions on educationally related not for profits supporting political candidates for office the CEOs or Presidents of such entities don’t step out like Diana Rauner had done. There is nothing illegal about it, but its going to be somewhat difficult for Diana Rauner to reassume the role of the non-political advocate for early childhood education and services after this is all over.
I am sure there have been leaders of human services or educational not for profits that have endorsed Quinn as individuals, but really not to the public extent Diana has. For example I simply couldn’t imagine Mark A. Stutrud the current Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Lutheran Social Services of Illinois doing commercials for a candidate, or Monsignor Michael M. Boland the President and CEO of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago doing the same. What Ms Rauner is doing is a little over the top while she still is President of the Ounce of Prevention Fund.
Comment by Rod Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 12:23 pm
Quinn would have a hard time with an ad like this because he would not be looking into the camera. He would be staring at the film lights, no doubt.

Blah. C, he’s had much better. And this line bugs me: “Bruce: I’m not running because I want a political career.” Then why not say only one term? Why are you even running? What is the point of all this?
If Rauner loses it’s because of a number of reasons, but the biggest will be he never laid out any sort of reason to vote for him, never presented any sort of policy proposal, never provided any answers to his past or to the future.
Let’s face it, a decent GOP candidate would be up 8 points, maybe even 12 if he/she dropped the millions Rauner has. The fact that Rauner may lose shows how poor of a candidate he is.

I’ll excuse her for supporting her husband. I just think it is the wrong ad.
A good ad is everyday Illinoisans talking about why they are supporting Rauner, and his vision for what we can accomplish together.
Heck, it is a GOTV ad that doesn’t even ask people for their vote, or remind them when election day is?
I think someone said to Bruce or Diana: “It seems kinda weird that you two always appear separately in ads. Is everything okay between you two?”
So they thought what they heck, we gotta spend $3 million a week on something!

YDD — Are you suggesting that it is possible for a person to behave ethically despite potential conflicts of interest relating to a spouse’s political activities?
Are you saying that it is sufficient for an honorable person with an interest in this state’s future to take clear, transparent actions that create a “firewall” between his/her professional obligations and the spouse’s political activity?
Are you implying that adult professionals who share a number of common interests may support each other’s endeavors while still maintaining clear boundaries between their work and their personal lives?
Because, gosh, I don’t think that’s possible. And neither, apparently, does Bruce Rauner.
Comment by Soccermom Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 2:03 pm

They have both been brutal towards one another so far. The two positive ad spots Quinn ran - the Washington tornado, and PQ is great with Gold Star families - were probably just as effective. I give the ad a “C” for being too cookie cutter and saying “I” instead of “we.”
Rauner made a recent trip downstate. With voter enthusiasm among GOP voters at 38% (was 54% in 2010 via CNN Research poll), makes you wonder if the Rauner camp is worried about Downstate numbers…

AlabamaShake if Pat Quinn wins I honestly hope that the Ounce of Prevention Funds work will in no way be impacted. I can’t think of a thing the fund has done that deserves to be criticized and Ms. Rauner has been an excellent leader up to now.
I just can’t understand why she didn’t leave the fund if she was going to do major personal advertising for Mr. Rauner that banks on her own credentials as a not for profit leader with some progressive credentials in relationship to educational issues. It amazes me and many other people too.
Comment by Rod Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 3:17 pm
The reality is… Ounce of Prevention did NOT pay for this ad or “endorse” Rauner… Enough with either the straw man or the lack of understanding of 501 C3 process… It’s no different than a CEO writing a personal check or being in an ad… She is his wife for goodness sake.. As long as the 501 C 3 is not PAYING for a lobbyist… Or actively campaigning for a candidate.. It’s irrelevant. They are not, his wife is… Move along.

Ah Slinger, my first response missed the cut. Hard to make time to respond twice. Calling me sexist is silly. She’s smart. she’s tough. Just like Mrs. Rauner, who is appearing as….get this…Mrs. Rauner in an ad.

And you’re chivalrous and smitten. Like Sir Walter Raleigh.
You’re just not very good at what you think you’re doing.

Not sure what that means. “what I’m doing”. I’m adding comments on a blog. I guess I’ll try to get better at it?? Didn’t know we get graded. Now I do.

Radically different lite-gov candidates generate a glaring difference. There’s simply no comparison. Vallas is articulate, experienced and qualified to be governor. Sanguinetti is an inexperienced Sarah Palin Wannabe, so Rauner’s forced to use his wife.
