2 solid wins to bad the Cards had to be the loser. The Sale victory was very impressive
See ya in October!

Well done Sox. Congrats to your fans. A Chicago STL world Series would be pretty awesome.

My second-favorite team is whoever is playing the Cardinals.
Comment by 47th Ward Thursday, Jul 2, 15 @ 12:12 pm
Haha. Check the standings, check the win totals.
But, Sale is very, very good.

Celebrate this, Sox fans! I’ll take October baseball! GO CARDS!
Comment by Anon Thursday, Jul 2, 15 @ 12:13 pm
And before the Sox’ two-game sweep of the Cardinals, St. Louis had been very hot, having just swept, uh, some other National League team.

Can’t wait for a chance for revenge in October

How embarrassing it must be for the Cubs to be swept by the team that subsequently got swept by the Sox. Sheesh.
Comment by Old Shepherd Thursday, Jul 2, 15 @ 12:18 pm
I was at the game last night and between cloud bursts and lightening (and hail) I was surprised they finished the game.

Two game sweep-that’s not really a sweep.
Comment by Soccertease Thursday, Jul 2, 15 @ 12:25 pm
Soccertease, considering the season we’re having, it’s as close to October ball as we’re gonna get.
Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Jul 2, 15 @ 12:27 pm
Since the Sox are mired in last place, they should trade Sales to the Cardinals. The Sox can finish in last place with him, or without him. They might as well start using the last-place team strategy of gathering prospects for the future.
Comment by Joe M Thursday, Jul 2, 15 @ 12:27 pm
More embarrassing for the Cardinals to be swept by the worst team in the American League.
Comment by Michael Westen Thursday, Jul 2, 15 @ 12:28 pm
Now if we can just get some decent prospects for Smarginal and Alice maybe we can have a shot at something next year (and a real manager wouldn’t hurt either)….
Comment by Ducky LaMoore Thursday, Jul 2, 15 @ 12:32 pm
Sox fans, you will be playing in October, but it will be the first few days of the month.
Now Rizzo predicted the Cubs would win the Central and Maddon predicted the Cubbies will play deep into October.
Comment by anon Thursday, Jul 2, 15 @ 12:33 pm
It was a *two* game series. Lol. Granted I’ll concede that the 9th inning last night was pretty ugly, but I’ll still take a .662 51/26 W/L ranking for the best record in baseball right now (over a .447 34/42).
Cards are about 17 games ahead of the Sox, so I don’t mind giving them two more wins, once in a while. Now next week against the Cubs and Pirates is going to be interesting for the NLC standings. That wild card slot is still up for grabs and with the top 3 teams in the NLC facing each other, we could see some interesting shifts. Pretty brutal week heading into the All-Star Break.

As a Southern Illinois native and life long Cardinal fan I know these anomalies will happen and I can accept that this will happen from time to time - yet where was the commentary when the Cards swept the Cubs this past week?

Don’t care. I’m a White Sox fan, and it’s my blog. Cards playing the Cubs has the same interest for me as a kiddie soccer game in Oklahoma.

Sox usually tank after the All Star break. I like to think that this time they just reversed. This is not a post season year for them to be sure. But bats seem to be starting to wake up and I don’t think they’re going to be last in the division or in MLB cellar when the season ends.
Comment by Responsa Thursday, Jul 2, 15 @ 12:47 pm
I would love to see Chris Sale in a uni with the birds on the bat, but it won’t happen. Cards wouldn’t give away what the Sox would want.

I blame Lisa Madigan and her father for that.

Rich, I appreciate and respect your loyalties, and for those of us that are more passionate about the National League, I understand.
I liked the comparison to the kiddie soccer game in Oklahoma - great touch.
Honestly, if I lived in Chicago, I’d probably be a Sox fan as well, and I would love to see a Cards - Sox World Series.
Keep stirring the pot - and even though we might disagree at times you do provide a valuable service. Thank you.

The Chicago White Sox SWEEP the Cardinals, I will drink to that.

Here’s what coulda happened: Cards could have gone 2-0. They coulda gone 1-1. Fact is they went 0-2.
And then someone brings up the Cu,uh,uh,ubs.
Like we care.

Not nice at all. But congrats. We have nothing against the Sox or their fans.
We look forward to boosting Sox Park attendance by 50% or so in a couple weeks when Cardinals visit.

great to win two against anyone, but this proves that the Sox can actually do things. and Sale is a wizard, both on the mound, and now we know at the plate and on the base paths. the only troubling aspect is that beating the Cardinals helps the Cubs. so sick of the Cubs.
Comment by Amalia Thursday, Jul 2, 15 @ 1:45 pm
Lifelong Cards fan here but always liked the Sox since the Baines Kittle Hoyt days. But really, they should use that broom to clean the AL Central basement while they are there. Heh.

There have been trade rumors out there that the Cubs are trying to trade Starlin Castro for Chris Sale. I can’t imagine the Sox would be interested in such a deal. Such a deal would be a sacrilege to the game of baseball.
Comment by Joe M Thursday, Jul 2, 15 @ 2:42 pm
Not sure about the AL, but I will bet that the Cards do make it to the World Series, at least to the NLCS - this is has proven to be a well run organization with great management. The only team with a better post season record than the Cards going back a hundred years are the Yankees.
Comment by illini Thursday, Jul 2, 15 @ 2:47 pm
Joe M. Sale going to the Cubs would not be like Saad going to the Blue Jackets. Sox fans would not like Sale going North. pitchforks and torches not like it.
Comment by Amalia Thursday, Jul 2, 15 @ 2:48 pm
Some perspective on Sale from a USA Today article on Tuesday. He is only 26 and is already in very elite territory.
ST. LOUIS — Chicago White Sox starter Chris Sale, perhaps the greatest show in baseball these days, tied a Major League record Tuesday night against the St. Louis Cardinals, becoming only the second player in history to strike out at least 10 batters in eight consecutive starts.
The only man who has ever achieved the feat was Pedro Martinez, who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame next month, who also struck out at least 10 batters in eight starts in 1999.
Sale, …. struck out 12 batters in eight innings, including every player in the Cardinals’ starting lineup in the White Sox’s 2-1, 11-inning victory at Busch Stadium.
Sale finished the month of June with a franchise-record 75 strikeouts, the most by any pitcher in a single month since Nolan Ryan struck out 87 in June, 1977, with the Angels. He is one of only four pitchers to strike out at least 75 in history, joining Sandy Koufax (76 in May, 1965), Sam McDowell (76 in May, 1968) and Ryan (five different months).

The Sox would laugh at a Castro for Sale trade. Throw in Russell and a couple of outstanding prospects and the Cubs may get a return phone call.
Comment by anon Thursday, Jul 2, 15 @ 2:56 pm
Chris Sale is, without a doubt, one of the premier pitchers in MLB this year. He is awesome, and the commenters and hosts on KMOX have been quite respectful of his abilities. Cardinal fans do recognize, respect and appreciate quality performances by other players and teams.
Comment by illini Thursday, Jul 2, 15 @ 3:02 pm
Have always looked at the White Sox fans as friends of the Cardinals. You know, my enemy’s enemy is my friend, as we share a common dislike for the slow pitch team from the north side.

Buehrle is definitely on my list. An inadvertent omission.
