Sun-Times revamps disastrous website

Posted in:

* The new ownership admitted the site was terrible and promised a redo. Go check it out and tell us what you think.

Unfortunately, there is no longer a state government/politics page. Maybe it’ll pop up later.

…Adding… MrJM found the state page. Click here and change your bookmarks accordingly, which is kinda silly to make us do.

  1. I’m not sure it improved. Lots of big pictures though!

  3. After one article an ad took over my entire screen - I can get that on the Tribune’s site, thank you.

  4. Wow. What a difference a new owner makes.

This site looks like it was designed by someone who wasn’t tripping on bad acid.

Can’t wait to see all the improvements that Ferro and Big Brain Bruce bring to the Trib!

  7. Welcome change. About time. I would guess the Poli page is coming. Looks a lot better. Designer must have been tripping on Good acid.

  8. For myself, I want lots of content, not lots of big pictures. It’s better, but there are still way too few stories on the page.

Drudge, NYT, HuffPo, even the Trib all understand this. Gimme lots of content!

Comment by Rich Miller Wednesday, Mar 2, 16 @ 1:50 pm

  9. It’s better but still needs improvement. I’m not a fan of page of pictures and I hate scrolling forever to find content.

  10. Are they trying to blind us with the ComEd banners? I get it. They sponsored.

  11. I hate clicking on a website and getting noise and video that I don’t want. Let me decide if I want to see/hear that.

“For myself, I want lots of content, not lots of big pictures. ”

I agree, but unfortunately, that’s the way web sites are going these days. I think it’s a big mistake, because one misses a lot. Your eye doesn’t catch headlines and links, because the images take up so much room.

That said, this is way better than the old site!

  12. Not only is the website clunky and filled with pop-ups, the pop-ups on the CST mobile site direct you to porn websites. That may be fine in certain instances, but it’s a problem when a newspaper website is directing you to NSFW sites. I’ve been boycotting the Sun-Times site for the last 6 months out of principle and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

  13. Hmmmmm.
So far, so good…no more infernal Mac Cleaner popups.
Anyone else plagued by those on the Sun Times site?

    Comment by TinyDancer(FKA Sue) Wednesday, Mar 2, 16 @ 2:26 pm

  14. It hasn’t crashed my browser yet, which is an improvement.

However, it autoplayed a video, which is pretty much the worst thing a website can do, next to crashing every time you try to access it.

It’s ugly and jumbled, and you have to scroll too much to find stories you actually want to read. Kind of like the Sun Times print edition of old, actually (might be like the current print edition, too. Haven’t picked up the dead tree edition in years and years).

Based on first impressions, it’s a huge improvement. Less jumbled than the Daily Mail, more in your face than the Tribune. I give it a B.

  16. They must not have ever looked at a good news site…I’d suggest the New York Time of Washington Post…Hell, even the USA Today site is better and it isn’t very good.

Comment by Outsider Wednesday, Mar 2, 16 @ 2:40 pm

  17. Better. No hang ups and script crashes. But it’s still hard to pick out the stories with all the ADS BLASTING YOU IN THE FACE. Little steps, I guess.

Comment by flippy Wednesday, Mar 2, 16 @ 3:27 pm

  18. not user friendly at all, in fact it presents less real news.
