Reminds me of Raja’s primary ad.

Lame.
Comment by The Snowman Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 1:57 pm
Two grades…
To the Ad, it’s a “B, B-”
Fun, Mendoza makes it fun, she appears bubbly, energetic, and makes you think “hmm, comptroller”
Second grade?
“F”
Touting an unconstitutional ideal and thinking it makes you good for the job is a fail.
Every. Time.
So, how does that “going against the constituion and my oath” work and who decides when the legislators get paid.
I’ve thought its been the Constitution and the accompanying statutes.
So, the Ad, it’s a “B, B-”, the too quick cutaways kept it from the solid B it probably deserved.
It’s also an “F”. Same with Quinn, same with Munger, same here.
Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 1:57 pm
She’s validating Munger’s payment strategy, I’ll bet Rauner’s wingman is very happy with this ad!
Comment by AC Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 1:57 pm
what do you think OW? she clearly supports not paying legislators too?
Comment by shesontheteam Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 1:58 pm
===what do you think OW? she clearly supports not paying legislators too?===
I’m sure it felt better typing that so fast instead of waitin’, didn’t it?
I must’ve missed your rating?
Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 2:00 pm
Lame is exactly right.
Comment by Deft Wing Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 2:00 pm
Captures her personality very well, for what that’s worth in a political ad. Very energetic.
Comment by chi Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 2:00 pm
B for the visuals, but the substance shows there isn’t much difference between these candidates, just their patrons.
Comment by Ron Burgundy Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 2:05 pm
Damn.
So when a legislator doesn’t agree with the budget, you can’t vote no? Disgusted with both.
They are now both tying votes to salaries. Jeeze.
Comment by Anonymous Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 2:05 pm
Incomplete- please tell me, how are you different than Munger???
Comment by Anon221 Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 2:05 pm
Remembering that most people see ads on their way out of the room, this one is an A. Fun. Makes the candidate very attractive in so many ways. And acknowledges that we are all pretty clueless about what the Comptroller does.
Comment by Uptown Progressive Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 2:06 pm
Vote for me and I’ll continue the practice that is popular with voters, unconstitutional, and stolen from the person I’m running against.
Comment by Anonymous Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 2:06 pm
Is the Comptroller race mirroring the Presidential? I want new candidates from both parties in those races please.
Comment by Big Muddy Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 2:06 pm
I should’ve rated the ad as well, I thought it was great, Mendoza seems very likeable, so I will give it an A-, subtract 2 letter grades for agreeing with Munger on financially harming legislators who aren’t independently wealthy, and arrive at a C-.
Comment by AC Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 2:06 pm
I can’t give it any better than a “C”. If the only compelling reason for electing her is to continue the legacy of Leslie Munger in slow-paying legislators, what not let Munger continue? It’s not a new idea and it’s being advanced by someone that can just as easily be criticized for causing the problem in the first place. I’m not saying that’s a fair criticism but it opens the door for Munger to say, “she wouldn’t have to steal my ideas if she had done her job in the first place”. The more I think about this it might actually rate a “D”.
I do agree with the Captain in that it does have the same folksiness of the Raja ad. But that’s about it.
Comment by pundent Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 2:07 pm
F. She just gave away the ability to attack Leslie Munger for unconstitutional acts in a Constitutional office.
Comment by Last Bull Moose Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 2:13 pm
Mr Belle and I saw it this morning, we both thought it was cute.
Rate it a B. Who needs an ad with substance at 7 AM?
Wasn’t there a Dem who ran some cute ads emphasizing his height? I think he won.
Comment by Belle Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 2:14 pm
=== She just gave away the ability to attack Leslie Munger for unconstitutional acts in a Constitutional office===
Meh. I figure somebody will sue after the election and this will be a moot point.
Comment by Rich Miller Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 2:18 pm
C+ for a cute, but insubstantial commercial.
I find it interesting that Mendoza fails to refer to her current and prior elected positions as Chicago City Clerk and a Representative in the General Assembly. Does she want people to believe she is a first time candidate and not veteran politician?
Presumably, she was one of those legislators who did not perform her job while in Springfield as the can was kicked down the road in terms of the Illinois budget and pension funding during her time as a House member.
Comment by Anonymous Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 2:18 pm
Arguably, the smartest person in the Ad is the one asking…
“You can do that?”
Yikes. Nothing like saying you’re going to do something, arguably against the oath you’ll take, you have someone in an ad question you about it, and you “double down”?
“You can do that?”
Smart question.
Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 2:21 pm
=== She just gave away the ability to attack Leslie Munger for unconstitutional acts in a Constitutional office ===
The folks don’t get too heavily invested in the legal niceties. Both are playing up this line because it feeds to the hatred of politicians.
P.S. Hopefully, Mendoza has something more consequential in the can or in production.
Comment by Norseman Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 2:38 pm
Reminds me of the “nice guy” ad that Frerichs ran in 2014. With all the negative ads people are seeing these days, this one will stick out due to its lack of mudslinging. B+
Comment by The Muse Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 2:49 pm
C for the Ad. Nothing groundbreaking or even introducing us to the candidate and her qualifications.
A to the succeeding “declassified” video of the USA v. Libyan aerial dogfight ca. 1989. AA’s bro was Navigator of the USS John F. Kennedy and for a number of reasons, we didn’t want Moammar’s guys near our boats. MIG-23s were no match for F-14s that day, or, well any day. Also helps to have the world’s finest aviators flying that superior machinery.
Comment by Arthur Andersen Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 2:49 pm
C- Maybe I’m getting old, but I found the rapid pace of the ad disconcerting.
Comment by Reme Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 3:05 pm
I like the ad. I give it an A-. People on this site are too negative when it comes to ads. After nothing but doom & gloom most of the cycle the Comptroller ads have been a breath of fresh air.
Comment by Team Sleep Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 3:07 pm
- Team Sleep -
I gave them both “Bs” I liked both Ads, they were fun.
and…
They both got “Fs” because running for a Comstituional Office should be about following the constitution, lol
Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 3:21 pm
Good ad!
Comment by Mal Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 3:26 pm
I don’t think she can afford to not pay herself
Does she think she needs name ID?
Comment by anonymous retiree Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 3:29 pm
A for personality and style
C- for content
Comment by walker Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 3:29 pm
I rate this ad an “A”. It gets the name out there and the proper way to say it.
So does ad allow Munger to say “even my opponent agrees with me?” on her next ad?
Comment by Louis G. Atsaves Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 3:38 pm
===So does ad allow Munger to say “even my opponent agrees with me?” on her next ad?===
Probably. Heck, Mendoza doubled down when a person in her own Ad “You can do that?”
What a mess. lol
Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 3:40 pm
So both candidates proclaim their eagerness to break the oath of office for political gain.
Climate change must be real, because we are in a Banana Republic.
Comment by Last Bull Moose Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 3:59 pm
Running on the same Banana Republic stunt as Munger (and Quinn).
A little funnier than Munger’s spot. Seriously, what’s the over/under on the percentage of people who know what the comptroller does? 20%?
Unlike Munger’s, the spot reflects the population (strange, unforced error by Munger).
No Thurston Howell III blue blazers, excessive doggie-stroking in the parlor and there are some people in it who look like they may not have just walked off the back nine at Bob-O-Link.
Comment by wordslinger Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 4:11 pm
Yes. God forbid people should dress well.
Comment by Backus Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 4:22 pm
=Unlike Munger’s, the spot reflects the population (strange, unforced error by Munger).=
All other things being equal this is a plus for the Mendoza ad. The Munger ad feels very north shore almost to the point of being deliberate.
Comment by pundent Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 4:25 pm
It’s cute and bouncy. It’s a pass. Not much substance, but it will shore up the base with some name rec.
Good enough. Better have something with a little more substance in the can to follow this up.
Comment by A guy Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 4:27 pm
I told Sussanna* that she shouldn’t write, direct, and edit the entire ad but apparently she didn’t listen to me.
I also told her that they little boy at the end of the ad can’t vote but she said he was a resident of Kankakee County so she kept him in.
I remember saying to her that she should be different than Munger so what does she come out with? Paying legislators last. Original.
I’m just glad she wasn’t swinging on the swings with the kids on the playground.
D+
Comment by menDOH!za Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 4:32 pm
B. Not a lot of substance but she comes across as likable and energetic. Big plus–gets the word “comptroller” on people’s radar. But if any station runs her’s and Munger’s ads consecutively voters still paying attention are going to wonder “what is the actual difference between these two candidates?”
Comment by Responsa Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 4:33 pm
Standard bio montage ad. Better than Munger’s because it repeats Mendoza’s name several times, whereas Munger’s says her name like twice in the beginning and end.
Comment by Will Caskey Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 4:48 pm
I am confused about how pols are supposed to dress in order to please people here. Rauner was mocked and accused of being “inauthentic” because he often appeared dressed down in jeans and casual flannel shirt. Leslie Munger is criticized for being “too obviously North Shore” (where she lives) when she probably just chose something out of her closet for a photo with her family.
Comment by Responsa Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 4:53 pm
===Rauner was mocked and accused of being “inauthentic” because he often appeared dressed down in jeans and casual flannel shirt.===
… and the droppin’ of the “Gs” that goes with the costume wearin’, don’t forget the “authentic” droppin’ of those “Gs”, LOL…
I’ll leave that there.
Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 5:02 pm
I like it.
Comment by JDuc Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 5:05 pm
Yeah, I know, Willy, but sometimes the partisan pettiness just reaches the point of idiocy.
Comment by Responsa Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 5:13 pm
If Munger ties Mendoza to Berrios like she should game changer red light traffic public union anti reform ?!
Comment by Railrat Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 7:22 pm
===I know, Willy, but===
I stopped there.
Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 7:22 pm
It’s grown on me throughout the day. A bright ad with people that look more like people I see every day. A solid B.
Comment by P Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 9:20 pm
A- Kinda lame for politicos, but it introduces her nicely to the voters and makes Mendoza more relatable than Munger & family in her “I’m wealthy” ad.
Comment by Pot calling kettle Wednesday, Oct 5, 16 @ 10:41 pm
Mendoza’s add is slightly different in that she says pay them last, not no pay at all. I still do have an issue with that assertion but it is a bit different. She is cute, the add shows she is cute and bubbly but does that get you a statewide office? probably not.
Comment by burbanite Thursday, Oct 6, 16 @ 8:09 am

Not sure of what the connection is to Berrios other than their party affiliation.
