*** UPDATED x3 - The evidence - Planned Parenthood responds - Personal PAC promises revelations *** Rauner and his wife give big to Planned Parenthood as Rauner threatens abortion bill veto

Posted in:

* This event is a week from tomorrow

* As you know, Rauner said last week that he will veto HB40, which would delete the “trigger” language in state law that some say would return Illinois to pro-life legal status if Roe v. Wade is overturned. The bill would also provide for Medicaid funding of abortions beyond what is provided now.

Needless to say, HB 40 is the top legislative priority for groups like Planned Parenthood. Vetoing the bill would break a promise to pro-choice voters made by his wife and others during the campaign. So, things could get, um, interesting at the gala.

JB Pritzker and his spouse are listed as $10,000 “Baby Boom” contributors.

Maybe I should take my tux to the cleaners.

*** UPDATE 1 ***  I expect this has something to do with what Gov. and Mrs. Rauner told pro-choice activists in 2014…

RAUNER DECEPTION ON REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS TO BE REVEALED

Pro-choice group releases evidence exposing Governor’s frenzy to curtail women’s right to choose

What: Personal PAC makes major announcement regarding Gov. Rauner’s position on HB 40

When: April 19, 2017; 12:30 p.m.

Where: Allegro Hotel, 171 W Randolph St, Chicago, IL 60601 (Palladium Room)

Who: Marcie Love, Personal PAC Founder & Chair Emerita
Melissa Widen, Personal PAC Board Chair
Terry Cosgrove, Personal PAC President & CEO
Toni Preckwinkle, Cook County Board President
Anna Valencia, Clerk, City of Chicago

*** UPDATE 2 *** Susan Musich, Board Chair, Planned Parenthood of Illinois…

Last week, Governor Rauner let us know his true stance on reproductive rights. By stating his intention to veto HB 40, Governor Rauner is refusing to safeguard legal access to abortion in Illinois in the event that Roe v. Wade is overturned. Further, he is perpetuating discrimination against women with low-incomes by prohibiting them from using state Medicaid coverage to access abortion care.

Planned Parenthood believes that women should have access to comprehensive reproductive health care, including abortion, regardless of where they live or the source of their health care coverage. The uncertainty of reproductive health care policies in Washington DC means that we must ensure there are protections in place at the state level. Governor Rauner need to stand with all Illinois women, not just some!

*** UPDATE 3 *** Posted by a commenter…

In 2014, Bruce Rauner took the pro-choice position to every question in the Personal PAC questionnaire except on Parental Notification, as confirmed by Diana Rauner

  6. Remember the Bruce and Diana Rauner “way”…

    It’s who they are….

You “donate millions”, like Matthew, Chapter 6 warns, to let the hypocrisy of the choices made… seem… “Trivial”

    “Diana and I donated millions… ”

… as social services collapse and Diana is the president of a leading organization..,

    “Diana and I donated millions…”

… as the clouted their denied, Winnetka-living daughter, over worthy Chicago students… and then again donated $250,000 to Payton Prep…

    “Diana and I donated millions… ”

… to places like Dartmouth for a Library and Dormatory, as Illinois’ state universities are owed… millions…

Know who Diana and Bruce Rauner are…

… they’ll donate $50,000 to Planned Parenthood, while donating too to Bruce’s Campaign Coffers, advocating the veto of HB40.

    “Diana and I donated millions… ”

… that’s when you know… the hypocrisy begins(?)

Veto HB40… donate $50K to seem… less “conservative”?

Yet, when it mattered, Bruce Rauner isn’t an ally, but actually someone willing to find out what is the price to seem less… hypocritical… to fool those that are willing to look the other way, just as the RaunerS want.

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 11:20 am

  12. Dude– hypocrisy: the practice of claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one’s own behavior does not conform; pretense.

How can you observe the Rauners and NOT conclude hypocrisy. Sheesh!

Not really snark, not meant to be snark, but hypocrisy has a way of framing actions by others to look as snark(?)

  21. I don’t think Rauner has come out as Pro-Choice or Pro-Life. Just against taxpayer funding for abortions.

Comment by Dude Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 11:46 am

  22. Just because someone opposes taxpayer funding for a service, doesn’t mean that person opposes that particular service. Some on the left miss that point.

Comment by Dude Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 11:49 am

  23. Oh - Dude -,

Maybe the questions you need to ask is…

…where does Planned Parenthood stand on HB40?

… why do the RaunerS feel the need to have actions seem counter to governmental actions?

… when has a veto on a social agenda issue led anyone to think a governor has no social agenda?

    Hmm.

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 11:56 am

  24. “I don’t think Rauner has come out as Pro-Choice or Pro-Life.”

Signing SB 1564 last year gave a pretty good indication where he falls on this issue.

Comment by Nick Name Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 11:57 am

  25. The obvious difference between fundraising for a cause and people giving large voluntary private contributions to fund a cause in order to maintain a service (such as PP), versus everyone’s tax dollars being used for that same cause/service seems to have escaped some commenters here. It really should not be that difficult a concept to deal with. Many people such as myself who consider ourselves pro-choice and who want abortion to be legal and safe and available also do not believe this procedure should be taxpayer funded against the will of millions of those taxpayers who find the procedure to be both objectionable and a sin against humanity.

Comment by Responsa Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 12:18 pm

  26. - Responsa -

    So Bruce Rauner is Pro-Choice?

Wonder how Sen. McCarter and Paul Caprio feel about that assessment, to name but two.

I also guess being pro-choice is also having no social agenda?

    Hmm.

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 12:20 pm

  27. I agree Rauner is showing his hypocrisy, but I see it opposite of many here. I have always believed Rauner is an Elitist Progressive masquerading as a conservative. His threat to veto HB40 is part of trying to appeal to conservatives.

    Comment by SOIL M Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 12:33 pm

  28. I’m sorry, but any person who actually believes tax dollars should EVER cover abortions - whether you’re prochoice or not - is insane and I deeply question their morality. Come on! If you believe in the “right” so much, start paying out of your own morally-concerned pocketbook. Not the easy, amoral leftwing approach: make everyone else pay!

    Comment by Observant27 Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 1:56 pm

  29. ==If you believe in the “right” so much==

…then you don’t want it so limited that only the rich can exercise it.

To the post: so Rauner opposes HB40, but sends money to the lead organization pushing it. Any of you social conservatives feeling had, yet?

  31. To the Update…

“But, but, but… Diana and Bruce just gave $50,000 to Planned Parenthood… and everything”

“Bruce has no social agenda” - Diana Rauner, Illinois First Lady, President of The Ounce of Prevention.

This must be a “business decision” by Personal PAC… right Diana Rauner? Exactly right.

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 3:29 pm

  32. Rauner probably said that he supports

    1) Overturning the Trigger law

    2) Abortion Coverage for State Employees and

    3) Medicaid funding of abortion

in his 2014 Personal PAC questionnaire. Therefore, Rauner’s going back on THREE of his 2014 campaign promises.

Terry’s right to call him out for BS.

Comment by Grand Avenue Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 3:30 pm

  33. All three of those questions appear on the Personal PAC survey every year.

In fact, Diana Rauner said in an email that the only question Rauner got “wrong” on the survey was about Parental Notification.

    http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2014/10/diana-rauner-bruce-convinced-pro-lifers-to-put-aside-their-views-on-this-issue.html

Therefore, Rauner explicitly said in 2014 he supported overturning the trigger law, supported abortion coverage for State employees, and supported Medicaid funding for abortion.

By vetoing HB40, he is proving himself a liar on all three issues.

Good for Terry for calling him out on his BS tomorrow.

The RaunerS are a confusing bunch.

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 3:43 pm

  37. In summary, here is the Lyin’ Bruce evidence.

In 2014, Bruce Rauner took the pro-choice position to every question in the Personal PAC questionnaire except on Parental Notification, as confirmed by Diana Rauner

    http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2014/10/diana-rauner-bruce-convinced-pro-lifers-to-put-aside-their-views-on-this-issue.html

That means that he answered YES to questions 1, 5, and 6

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4Bi-iePG1O6SmMwei1LMjFCazA/view

    Question 1 asks:

A 1975 Illinois Law (Illinois Abortion Law of 1975: P.A. 81-1078) states that when the 1973 Supreme Court Roe v. Wade decision is overturned or modified, Illinois law will revert back to its pre-Roe status, meaning abortion will again become illegal in Illinois as it was prior to 1973.

    1. Do you SUPPORT legislation repealing this 1975 law and replacing it with a law stating that decisions about reproductive matters are to be made privately between a woman and her doctor, without government interference?

    Question 5 asks:

    5. Do you SUPPORT restoring abortion coverage under the state Medicaid plan?

    Question 6 asks:

    6. Do you SUPPORT legislation to restore state employees’ health insurance coverage for abortion?

Bruce Rauner said he supports all 3, which is what HB 40 does - however, Lyin’ Bruce decided to veto a law that did nothing more than what he promised to support!

Comment by Grand Avenue Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 3:44 pm

  38. Oswego, no better irony than to cash that check and use the money to try and unseat him.

Comment by Anonish Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 4:06 pm

  39. It will be interesting to see how Bruce pivots once the PP folks come out and call him out. We’ve already seen the happy dance from the far right.
How will he make that tap-dance once that bill is passed? Does he care more about a possible primary or does he worry about how he looks in the general?

Comment by DuPage Bard Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 4:08 pm

  40. ===… no better irony than to cash that check and use the money to try and unseat him.===

    Which is why I commented…

“The RaunerS are a confusing bunch”

Who are they trying to fool? Is $50,000 enough to silence PP?

Indeed, the RaunerS are a confusing bunch.

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 4:09 pm

  41. Same old Bruce (and Diana it seems).

    Say one thing, do another.

    $50,000 is meaningless to Bruce.

Comment by JS Mill Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 4:18 pm

  42. A guy, does that really work? Got any tips that could make one a size bigger?

Comment by Arthur Andersen Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 4:19 pm

  43. >In summary, here is the Lyin’ Bruce evidence.

Nicely done, Grand Avenue. You have looked up and presented some objective facts and not written about vague statements or personalities. Sadly, I’d wager you’re not a msm journalist who has been covering the Rauner administration this past couple of years, since we’ve seen very little of that.

The RaunerS’ action will play well with the crowd that feels government should really cut taxes and then people who have money will support all these social services themselves instead of government doing it.

Comment by Earnest Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 4:24 pm

  44. – Does he care more about a possible primary or does he worry about how he looks in the general? –

Primary from whom? And on this single issue? That’ll get you the old Steve Baer/Jack Roeser 25% in a GOP primary.

Comment by wordslinger Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 4:58 pm

  45. Planned Parenthood should remove the Rauner’s from the invite, give them their $50,000 back, and bar them from the event.

It’s like The Sierra Club taking $50K from Trump after he bans research on greenhouse gases.

Comment by Free Set of Steak Knives Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 5:01 pm

  46. http://time.com/4424971/democrats-extreme-abortion/

Democrats position in 2016 is more extreme on abortion than ever

Instead, the 2016 platform calls for quite the opposite: the repeal of the Hyde Amendment. Repealing this longstanding amendment to a bill would mean abortions for Medicaid recipients, paid for with taxpayer funds. Forcing Americans to pay for the abortions of others hardly respects conscience rights; it’s a direct assault on them.

the Hyde Amendment has been the law of the land since 1976 through the entire presidencies of Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama

Now democrats want taxpayer funded abortions all the way to the 9th month

32% of Democrats consider themselves pro life

Comment by Lucky Pierre Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 5:32 pm

  47. - Lucky Pierre -

Then tig should be so upset that the RaunerS are donating $50,000 to PP.

    Why aren’t you?

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 5:35 pm

  48. Oh, Rauner tells a lie and then pretends he didn’t. Billionaires get to tell all the lies they want in 2017. Watch all the newspapers endorse him again as long as he doesn’t forget to buy enough print advertising. We common folk will never catch on as long as he keep dropping your g’s so good. Bring on the shopping at Walmart commercial.

  49. “Then you should be so upset that the RaunerS are donating $50,000 to PP.

    Apologies.

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 6:29 pm

  50. This is not a difficult concept OW

Since 1976 it has been the policy of the US Government in both Democratic and Republican administrations that taxpayer money should not be used to fund abortions.

Why the sudden need to change the policy and as Howard Dean say shun everyone from the party who is not pro choice?

Catholic voters used to be reliably democratic, Trump won Catholics for the first time since 2004

What Governor Rauner who is welcome in his party as a pro choice Republican wants to do with his personal funds is an entirely different matter.

The spin on this issue is completely wrong, only 4 states voluntarily publicly fund abortions.

Four of these states provide funding voluntarily (HI, MD, NY,1 and WA); in thirteen, courts interpreting their state constitutions have declared broad and independent protection for reproductive choice and have ordered nondiscriminatory public funding of abortion (AK, AZ, CA, CT, IL, MA, MN, MT, NJ, NM, OR, VT, and WV)

Comment by Lucky Pierre Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 6:47 pm

  51. ===Catholic voters used to be reliably democratic, Trump won Catholics for the first time since 2004===

As a Catholic, I’ve voted Republican, religiously, since I’ve been voting.

Skipping Rauner-Quinn was the first time I never didn’t vote for a governor or vote for the republican nominee.

===What Governor Rauner who is welcome in his party as a pro choice Republican wants to do with his personal funds is an entirely different matter.===

Rauner is NOT a pro-choice governor with HB40, but good try.

Diana Rauner told this whole state Bruce has no social agenda. We are now learning that’s just not so.

Vetoes matter. That’s how the measure of governors can be weighed.

If you are a pro-choice, female suburban voter, Bruce Rauner has let it be known his social agenda.

When it mattered, for Planned Parenthood, Diana and Bruce Rauner showed they were less than honest with Illinois, and the veto of HB40 is the duct tape to seal Rauner as having a social agenda.

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 6:55 pm

  52. ===What Governor Rauner who is welcome in his party as a pro choice Republican===

Ya may want to tell Sen. McCarter and Paul Caprio about all this Pro-Choice Rauner, as they giggle at you and point to the HB40 veto that’s a-comin’…

Rauner is not a Pro-Choice governor.

Diana and Bruce Rauner try sham donations to hide hypocrisy. They’ve done it so often, they’re own checkbook is spinning.

Then again, hypocrisy is expensive. It costs millions to pretend.

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 7:00 pm

  53. OW your spin is completely wrong, only four states voluntarily use taxpayer money to fund abortion.

I repeat thirteen, courts interpreting their state constitutions have declared broad and independent protection for reproductive choice and have ordered nondiscriminatory public funding of abortion (AK, AZ, CA, CT, IL, MA, MN, MT, NJ, NM, OR, VT, and WV)

this would continue but HB40 expands taxpayer funding of abortion to go with the 4 states who voluntarily use taxpayer money to fund abortion

important distinction you fail to recognize

Comment by Lucky Pierre Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 9:36 pm

  54. ===…your spin is completely wrong, only four states voluntarily use taxpayer money to fund abortion===

    - Lucky Pierre -

    It’s not spin, here’s what’s real…

Diana and Bruce Rauner are donating to Planned Parenthood to stop moves that Governor Rauner is going to do with a veto of HB40.

That’s how messed up the RaunerS are here.

Again, you may need to tell Sen. McCarter and Paul Caprio that Bruce Rauner is pro-choice too…

Also, Diana and Bruce Rauner both completely misled Planned Parenthood with the answers on the 2014 questionnaire and Diana Rauner saying those were Bruce’s positions.

Focus on the RaunerS, not your spin of “other states”.

The RaunerS, again, show clear hypocrisy, and their position should worry suburban women.
