Today’s number: $14.5 million

Posted in:

* Tribune

A seven-bedroom, 10,000-square-foot red-brick, Romanesque Revival mansion on Astor Street in the Gold Coast neighborhood sold Thursday for $4 million. […]

Astor Street’s record is the $14.5 million that Democratic gubernatorial candidate J.B. Pritzker paid in 2006 for a mansion.

Wow.

According to Cook County records, the company which owns the house paid $204,558.32 in property taxes in 2015.

* By comparison, Cook County estimates Gov. Bruce Rauner’s Winnetka mansion is worth $3.33 million. The governor paid $81,967.28 in property taxes in 2015.

No wonder he wants a property tax freeze. /s

* Sen. Daniel Biss’ residence, by the way, is estimated to be worth $247,880 by Cook County. Biss paid $5,943.09 in property taxes in 2015.

  7. JB and BR are so in touch with the voters living like us commoners….brings a tear to my eye. Meh …Billionairs need lots of space to wander around in and help them releive their guilt.

  9. Have Bliss and every other home owner in Cook pay the same real estate property tax rate as those in the collar county and CPS funding by solved

  10. “$247,880 by Cook County. Biss paid $5,943.09″

He would be paying $1000 more in Sangamon County. Time to raise school taxes in Cook

  11. So what?

Being rich doesn’t make someone incompetent or heartless. Example: Michael Bloomberg

Being poorer doesn’t make someone more competent or compassionate.

Democrats: I really want to vote for you.
There are REAL issues in this race.
    Stick to them please.

  12. I could care less about the personal residences of the Governor and those wish to become governor. I care for what each would like to do to improve life in Illinois, which remains a compelling place to live, work, and raise a family despite what Kenneth Griffith and Bruce Rauner say.

  13. Anonymous, you do know that Illinois is losing population faster than almost any state in the union.

  14. Funny how Biss is paying 2.4% - a rate higher than the highest state average - and folks on here think he’s not paying enough.

  15. Sure Bruce’s property taxes may seem like a lot, but they do include the right to send his kids to the great New Trier school district.

  16. No sympathy from me to those who can afford multi-million dollar homes then complain about property taxes. Or anyone, really. If you can’t afford the taxes, you can’t afford the property.

  17. ==Have Bliss and every other home owner in Cook pay the same real estate property tax rate as those in the collar county and CPS funding by solved==

How are Cook County suburban property owners, members of the same “downstate” school districts as the collar counties, solving CPS’ funding issues?

==If you can’t afford the taxes, you can’t afford the property.==

Forward that message to the Progressive Caucus and the folks they’re defending along The 606.

Comment by City Zen Friday, Apr 28, 17 @ 2:58 pm

  18. The poverty pushers along the 606 and in Pilsen drive me nuts. The City needs money and they want to restrict its growth.

Yep, that % is outrageous. This state is out of control.

  20. City Zen. You are correct and I misspoke and painted with too broad a brush. Have City residents pay same tax rate as collarccpunties and local school districts receive. And that being said there has to be a better and more equitable way to fight no schools than property tax. So sorry about previous posy

Comment by DuPage Saint Friday, Apr 28, 17 @ 3:11 pm

  21. DuPage, only when the state covers our teacher pensions.

Comment by Ron Friday, Apr 28, 17 @ 3:14 pm

  22. If the property taxes paid are on one-third of the assessed valuation (like they are where I live), then both Rauner and Biss paid just over 7 percent in property taxes (which is just about the same percentage I paid). Or are the taxes in other counties paid on the full value?

Comment by Silent Budgeteer Friday, Apr 28, 17 @ 3:25 pm

  23. Liberty, can you provide the data and calculations supporting your assertion about Senator Biss’ property taxes? I have done some and would love to read yours first.
