Neither has had a full year’s funding by Rauner’s signature.

Illinois is basically fine. Its taxes need to go up more, hopefully sooner rather than later, but it’s not THE biggest deal (anymore).
I’m quite weary of IL pols yelling that IL is mid-disaster when it is not and studying their fingernails when it very clearly is.

Reminds me of how my company meetings used to go. They would start out saying how bad things were, that we needed to do better and would end saying how much they appreciated what we were doing for corporate and how valuable we were.

Bond issue next week and he’s allegedly chasing Amazon? Way to sell it, Ol’ Gil. Put a poison skull and crossbones badge on your biker vest costume.
Rauner’s actions and rhetoric in office make sense if you conclude that he’s a bad faith actor, that he is willfully sabotaging the state where and when he can for whatever twisted pleasure he gets out if it.
Or he’s stupid. Take your pick.

What? We have one of the highest tax burdens in the nation, our unemployment rate is one of the highest in the US, we are losing population and we haven’t recovered all the jobs lost since the last recession.

If you haven’t been able to move the needle one iota, what makes you think you can move it after what is widely believed to be a “wave” year.
There will be 2 waves, actually, in 2018: the Democrat wave that will reinstate the super-majorities in the IL House and the voters’ wave. That’s when the voters wave goodbye to Rauner.

I don’t want — or need — to be “protected” by Bruce Rauner. I don’t need his protection, and I don’t want it.
He had his chance — and he’s failed. Another 4 years won’t change a thing.
He failed to protect social services. He failed to protect universities. Why in the world — why in the world — would I think he could do any better than he has done?

Does Rauner have such a cognatic disconnect that he believes he can say two totally opposite things at the same time and not have anyone notice?
Either he suffers from multiple personalities that don’t communicated, or he has the ultimate chutzpah.
I blame the press for this; they have rarely challenged any statement made by Rauner.

Will Caskey is sums up the views of the Ostriches in the Democratic leadership in Illinois, Illinois is basically fine.
We are just one more tax increase way from prosperity. The fact that Illinois is losing population because of rising taxes on middle class families and businesses is of absolutely no concern.

Hi Mr. Pierre, and Ron (Sandack? We should just get lunch and yell at each other in person).
Yes Illinois is basically fine. You having sad feelings about the level of state taxation is not a material concern. The economy could expand faster, sure. The population could rise, or rise faster or whatever.
The state is fine, not perfect. Its taxes need to go up because while its structural deficit is addressed for now, the bill backlog isn’t accounted for in a way anyone would call stable. I didn’t say that would create prosperity, because taxes have nothing to do with prosperity beyond the most marginal sense in scenarios one does not see in first world countries.
Go snicker about this on the IPI Facebook page if you wish, it will not change that it is reality.

CrispyCritter - Unlike Pat Quinn, who lives to run, Rauner just wanted an expensive play toy. Didn’t work out the way he planned, once he’s out he’ll just look for another shiny object to play with - maybe another house or his own island.

I don’t think Illinois can survive without, among other reforms, a progressive income tax. I believe that electing Rauner will begin a chain of events that will more hastily lead to a progressive income tax compared to electing not-Rauner, so that’s why I am going to vote for him. The argument is not compelling, I admit, but everything else in this state is window dressing compared to that war.

Supply side economics/Laffer curve/Hayek/Mises
Economic theory
Which only effectively transfers
Wealth upward to the super wealthy
Which is exactly what has happened
In those states

When people who move out of state are asked why, taxes are not the main factor. Just eight percent of those who said they were leaving claimed it was because of taxes (versus 14 percent of New York respondents and 8 percent of Marylanders). Which means that taxes were not the reason for 92 percent. Twenty-six percent of Illinoisans who said they were leaving claimed it was work/business related, 17 percent said weather/location, 15 percent said it was for a quality of life change, 9 percent said cost of living, and 6 percent said it was for family/friends or school related.

That is only true if you do not believe in paying your bills. Which seems to be the Alt-right dog whistle these days. Is that the new standard of excellence in American business? That is what the Trumps and Rauners seem to think.
You see, it is just math. We couldn’t pay our bills at 3.75% and Rauner wants to go back to 3%?! If that is what passes for math at Dartmouth and Fordham, we may need to talk about decertification.

He disclosed to bond buyers that he plans on spending the entire $36B of FY18 appropriations, even after getting that big tax increase.
In fact, he could only identify $150M in cuts — .4 of 1%.
Please, help him take actions that will match yours and his dishonest talking points.

Exactly what percentage of the approved budget has Rauner sequestered or otherwise set aside?
What amount of waste, fraud, and abuse have Rauner’s Directors identified and cut?
What other steps within his executive powers has Rauner ordered to curtail spending?

Tired of the same old song but it needs to be said. Il is in a mess because of incompetent governance from both parties over decades. Everyone know we can’t cut our way out of this mess but to deny the ever increasing tax burden is delusional. What any candidate for governor should be advocating for is an end to the cozy deals that state employee unions have had for years. They also have to commit to funding the pension systems. And they need to move to a defined contribution retirement plan. Then someone needs to do a complete needs analysis of Illinois, infrastructure and vulnerable citizens. At the same time no new unfunded mandates for public schools for at least 5 years. Finally, the next legislature should enact redistricting reform for the 2020 election. That would be a great start. Too logical so never mind, this will never happen.

As CFO me and the Director asked to cut expenses in our own Agency and we were blocked by GOMB. As a true Fiscal Conservative, I do not think Rauner cares about saving money (as $100’s million of late payment interest proves).
