In a memo obtained by the Daily Egyptian, Carbondale City Manager Gary Williams said to city council members President Trump could potentially be holding a rally in Carbondale on Oct. 27.
“Our PD was contacted on Monday from the US Secret Service (SSA) to inform us that President Trump is interested in having a political rally in Carbondale on 10/27,” Williams said in the memo. “Although these conversations were preliminary, it sounded to us that there was a decent chance that the event could happen.”
I checked around earlier and was told he’s planning to hold a rally for Congressman Mike Bost. President Trump traveled to Granite City in July for a rally with Bost and US Rep. Rodney Davis. Gov. Rauner noticeably skipped that event. He also didn’t attend Vice President Pence’s rally in Springfield this month.

U.S. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan is scheduled to visit World Wide Technology next week during a campaign stop for U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis.

–Gov. Rauner noticeably skipped that event.–
If McCann starts tukkus-smooching now on the twitters, he might have a shot at getting on stage.
I suggest employing phrases like “witch hunt,” “fake news,” and “no collusion.”

Well, that should make for an interesting Halloween weekend for Carbondale.

So that’s why BTIA has been furiously trying to line up events for the Guv in the Quad Cities on the 27th.

FINALLY someone worth paying attention to in this state. Someone who knows how to be something other than a do-nothing snoozefest.

apparently not.

Google search implores Unofficial Halliween was last weekend. There is a ‘big’ family oriented fall festival planned downtown that day into the evening. So Trump is going to show up and mess that all up with security?

Which journalist will the president encourage Bost to assault?
Comment by Anonymous Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 12:29 pm
If Rauner has an ounce of risk-taker in his bones, like he claims, he should show up at the Trump rally.
He has nothing to lose. /ha
Comment by cdog Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 12:31 pm
Actually, Trump and Pence made a point to tell Rauner “it’d be great if you didn’t show up”…. That pretty well sums up Brewski Bruce these days.

If Trump comes to IL to boost Bost, and boasts he’s the best, will that make his re-election a bust?
Comment by Ron Burgundy Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 12:39 pm
Rich, you’ve got to go. You might get a “I covered a Trump rally and all I got was bodyslammed” t-shirt.
Comment by AlfondoGonz Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 12:40 pm
I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody’s part.
Comment by 47th Ward Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 12:44 pm
Notice the dichotomy: Rauner spent his time in office bashing Rs, while Trump (regardless of your opinion) is making the rounds to help Rs.
Comment by Wilson Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 12:51 pm
So which Northeastern Illinois GOP politician is going to go and campaign with their President? If you go you get labeled that your with Trump to suburban woman. If you don’t go it shows you don’t respect the President of your party and don’t care about your base.
This may help Bost but it sure opens up questions for Lake, McHenry, DuPage, Cook and Will County Republicans, doesn’t it now.
Will Peter Roskam be there? Does he respect the President of his party?
Will Tom Morrison be there? Does he respect the President of his party?
Just keep throwing that question to every suburban Republican and watch. Maybe a Daily Herald article about which Republicans from NE Illinois want to be seen with their President?

Only person who get hit on this is Rauner. He governs the whole state. Ask anybody in those districts where Carbondale and Granite City are located on a map and they would have no idea.
Just like 2010 when nobody wanted to be seen with Obama. It’s how it works when one party has control of executive and legislative branch.

Hope he does come. Nothing highlights the pointlessness and uselessness of Illinois politicians better than having to be compared to this President who is getting so much done for this country.

Questions like why would a suburban congressman and legislator drive over six hours to stump in a district where no one knows them?

SIUC doesn’t have a chancellor at the moment, so I’m very interested to find out who approved this. For a university that started off the year telling cheerleaders they couldn’t kneel to now host Trump is pretty appalling.
Comment by LXB Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 2:38 pm
Hmmm. The memo referenced in the story also mentions a visit to Springfield. Team Rodney must be really worried.
Oh, and LXB, the President doesn’t need the permission of anyone at SIU to visit the City of Carbondale.
Comment by Arthur Andersen Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 3:31 pm
LXB. Maybe this is what SIUC needs to turn itself around, but what AA said. Carbondale.
Comment by Blue Dog Dem Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 3:37 pm
The memo specifically talks about the White House working with SIU to secure a possible venue (presumably the arena, though I have heard today that it may be just a quick stop at the airport). I’ve had a chance to ask some campus higher-ups today what the story is, and none knew who was involved in these discussions.
Comment by LXB Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 4:06 pm
What does Paul Ryan get you? Can’t he just send a check?
Comment by Albany Park Patriot Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 4:28 pm
LxB. Well if thats the case,SIUC should welcome any President with open arms.do you think Trump coming can hurt enrollment. a popular President in southern Illinois can only help.
Comment by Blue Dog Dem Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 4:34 pm
oh, please let Trump visit Springfield. I’m working on my protest sign right now.
And Trump does not need permission from SIU to visit the city of Carbondale, but the only venue in Carbondale for the rally will be on campus.
The only main airport in the region is in Marion/Herrin and I don’t think they have a HUGE hanger big enough for Trump’s head.
Comment by L.A. Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 4:39 pm
“a popular President in southern Illinois can only help.”
He has like a 38% approval rating; I would not call that popular
Comment by L.A. Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 4:40 pm
The long runway at SI Airport is 6500 feet. No way for Air Force One. Marion has 8000 which is the minimum acceptable length.
Comment by Arthur Andersen Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 5:02 pm
L.A. are you sure Trump can read? I hear he doesn’t like too. But he is VERY popular in southern Illinois.
