“It’s about the lack of humanity that’s being shown. The lack of common decency”

Posted in:

* Press release…

Lauren Underwood released her third ad of the General Election Oct. 24, after a dominant performance at her one and only public debate with her incumbent Republican opponent, Randy Hultgren.

The ad, which will run on broadcast, cable and digital platforms, highlights the story of Plainfield residents Carrie and Tom Jackson. The couple’s son, Tyler, was diagnosed with cancer at age 18. Carrie attended Hultgren’s one and only town hall event of 2017, and heard her representative make a promise.

“When I attended Randy Hultgren’s town hall in April 2017, I felt as though he made a personal promise to protect my son Tyler’s health care. He broke that promise,” Carrie said. “Lauren Underwood heard the same promise. I’m voting for Lauren because she will fight for my son.”

* The ad is pretty darned good

* Script…

Carrie: A few years ago, we found out our 18-year-old son had cancer. Randy Hultgren had a chance to protect people with pre-existing conditions like our son, and he failed us. And that’s when all my activism started. It’s not just about politics. It’s not about Republican and Democrat. It’s about the lack of humanity that’s being shown. The lack of common decency.

Tom: And we need people like Lauren Underwood who will bring us together. And she definitely will do that when she’s in Washington.

  1. Underwood and Casten run ads with families in the districts talking about the importance of access to care. Hultgren and Roskam respond with ads labeling their opponents as “Liberal Lauren” and “Sleazy Sean” respectively.

  2. IMHO this makes the McCann add look even worse, if that’s possible. To the ad, short, sweet, to the point and factual. A-

  3. Damn good ad.

  4. That is a great ad. Watch it with the sound off - it screams District values. Halloween pumpkins. High school football. Beautiful work.

    And if you want to compare and contrast, take a look at this truly useless ad for Rauner. I actually saw this one in a bar last weekend, with the sound off. There’s no way to tell what this ad is for - his name is barely visible in the corner.

    It was kind of fun to watch, because I pretended that it was a decorating service promising to match your walls to your skin color so your head almost disappears every time you walk in the room…

  5. Her campaign has done great work. She and her staff have her in great position to pull off an upset in a heavily Republican district.

  6. This is how Dems should be campaigning in these districts: health care, tax cuts for the rich, other issues of common concern to middle class and working class families.

  7. === It’s about the lack of humanity that’s being shown. The lack of common decency. ===

    Exactly. This sums up the case against the GOP in general.

  8. One reason I think the ad is genuine and terrific is because Underwood is genuine and terrific. Over the summer, she called me to ask for additional support for her campaign - standard stuff. Except that she started by spending about 20 minutes+ talking about what she’d hope to do on health care and other issues. “Hey Lauren, don’t you need to get back campaigning? You have me already!” She seems to completely mean what she says. I hope she wins.

  9. Good? Genuine? Terrific? It should be in the media hall of fame as an example of Mencken’s genius: Nobody ever went broke (or wasn’t elected) underestimating the intelligence of the American people

  10. This should be the Dems message nation-wide.

  11. Anonymous; right it should be their message nationwide
    Then tell me their values and plans nationwide

  13. The snake-oil that GOP reps. have been selling on their “support” of pre-existing conditions is not only indecent, but incredibly stupid.

    If they get their way, with “high-risk” insurance pools, the scam will be exposed, immediately. That’s not how insurance works.

    No one with cancer could ever afford an alleged insurance “plan” with a pool of nothing other than those with cancer. That’s the grift these screwball GOP reps. are selling-out their constituents for the sake of their donors.

  14. I dont know how to say this. I went through a serious cancer bout two decades ago. I was lucky. Both the wife and i wete double insured. Insurance, i thought, was about a balanced pool. The good with the bad. Pre existing conditions shouldnt be a mitigating factor. Heres the dumb part.as i get older, i feel there needs to be age limits on the kind of care you can receive. Save it for the young. Eho makes that call. I dunno. But old Blue has luckily gotten a lot of miles outta life. Save the money for the youth.

  15. First a great ad from a great candidate.
    Second, I think this has been the message of Democratic candidates/elected officials for years, but the media doesn’t like facts, the old phrase, if it bleeds, it leads.

  17. ==This should be the Dems message nation-wide.==

    It pretty much is? reps have been on the defensive and lying about how much they’ll protect pre-existing conditions because dems have been hammering them on it for a while now.

    Comment by brugroffil Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 8:05 am

  18. Blue Dog, the old and the young should have equal access to quality low-cost health insurance that does not discriminate on the basis of age, tax bracket, or prior health conditions.
    I am glad you are a survivor because I appreciate your posts on this blog alot.
