* From the Senate pool report today…
SB2052 — Sen. Castro
Concur with House on their amendments (TIF Districts)Righter: Said the House, “in what I am sure was an unintentional oversight,” left out a community in his district [Charleston] from this bill. He said he and others have been working for a few days to address that issue. He added he was “compelled to support my colleagues” and vote on it despite his community not being included.

Adopt an amendmentFloor amendment adopted, moved to third reading
Righter: Carries language that would extend a TIF district in the city of Charleston. Fixes what he pointed out about SB2052.
Lightford: Rise in support. It’s “important that we leave no community out when it comes to TIF and financing to help our communities…glad we did have a vehicle … “

* OK, let’s back up a bit. The Charleston TIF would be in Rep. Chris Miller’s (R-Oakland) district. Last weekend…

Yeah. Probably not a good move.
* On Thursday, the House passed SB2052, which didn’t include Charleston’s TIF extension, 97-14. Miller voted against it.
GOP REBELLION!
A group of House Republicans say they’re fed up with how the General Assembly is addressing the state’s financial woes, and they’ve formed a new caucus to do something about it.
Miller is a member of that new sub-caucus.
Also on Friday, Miller asked the House Executive Committee to advance his own TIF bill for Charleston. It was rejected 5-6, with GOP Rep. Grant Wehrle also voting against it.
House Republican Leader Jim Durkin then personally intervened and Exec unanimously approved sending the bill to the floor.
* Today, Sen. Dale Righter, who also represents Charleston, found a vehicle bill, worked his colleagues hard and passed the stand-alone through his chamber, ultimately receiving a standing ovation for his efforts.
I refer you back to what I wrote on Thursday…
And when Sen. Righter retires, who’s going to advocate for Eastern Illinois University? Who’s going to put in the hard work that Righter did to make sure that part of the world gets its fair share from the state?
Nobody, that’s who, unless Bailey or one of his regional colleagues finally start acting like adults.
And now we wait to see what Rep. Miller (no relation) and the House do about the two Charleston TIF bills awaiting action in the chamber.
*** UPDATE *** The House decided not to take up either bill. So Charleston still doesn’t have its TIF extension.

Miller will vote “Red”, say he’s being targeted, and vows that he will, with his super-super minority, continue to, at their own choosing, force the HRaunerites to kowtow.
Of course that’s silly and not remotely true to what will happen, but make no mistake, the enablers of this new sub-caucus are enabling the fracturing of what could be the only thing that could bring back the GOP in Cook and the suburbs.
Thanks… the the phony Raunerites who voted for masks, but voted “Red” to remove Bailey… it’s things like that… that give Miller and the Hateful Eight hope they can dictate the moral compass of the former GOP.
You members know… the enablers who voted… and cowardly allow things like this “mess” up for Charleston.
Miller isn’t Sen. Righter… or at all a leader in ANY sense…
I’m with Leader Durkin, all day, every day… when it comes to a hateful group that creates a sub-caucus to dictate to actual leadership.
I’m nauseous at this. Thank goodness for Sen. Righter.

Jim Durkin running Righter’s bill in the House. Huh.

I guess spreading hate and disease is more important that getting things done right for your constituents.
(I almost wrote “unbelievable”, but with this bunch, it isn’t.)

“I’ll take it from here.”
- Leader Durkin to the Hateful Eight, the ridiculous enablers… and Mr. Miller.
I need to compare those who voted for masks, against removing Mr. Bailey… and enabled the Super-Super minority a standing as thoughtful to GOP leadership.
I need to catalog that.

Worth noting that yesterday, after Miller’s shot at the TIF went down in Exec initially, they came back and Miller apologized for not voting in favor of everyone else’s TIFs in the first bill. Second attempt then cleared Exec without issue (especially since Durkin subbed in Demmer for Wehrle on round two).

I especially enjoyed how, in round 1, Miller indicated that he believed he was asking for a ^47-year^ TIF (it was actually *only* 12, which is already longer than usual), for an unknown (to him) amount, for unspecified purposes beyond “I’m told it will help my district” (or words to that effect). Folks were literally laughing out loud in the Chamber.

Just think that Charleston, in 2021, will have 1) Chris Miller in State House, 2) Darren Bailey in State Senate and 3) Mary Miller in Congress.

Feel terrible for Charleston

Don’t feel too bad. This is exactly what the majority of people here want…”Christians” in government. Competence is not a requirement. They’ll never really understand why the city is suddenly in a world of hurt. They’ll just blame it on Madigan and Pritzker.

This. This is why this Charlestonian will miss Dale so much when he retires. Thank you, Senator Righter.
RDB, what you describe keeps me up at night. Can Charleston please be carved out of the bloc?

Luckily, odds-wise, Ms. Miller will likely lose her seat then lose to either Bost, Davis, or LaHood
To give you some hope.
It’s to the HDems in the Illinois House’s advantage you keep as many Hateful Eight members in the Illinois House to ruin any chance for GOP unity after Rauner and Trump.
Unless the HGOP can work a deal to draw a district to beat Hateful Eight members in a primary, but, as you all seem to be saying, locals like the local Eastern Bloc folks, so…
Gosh, I miss Sen. Righter already.

OW, one can hope. It all feels rather too Atwellian to me around here these days. This is not the Republican party I grew up with. And I can’t see myself voting for one ever again. I’ve had good chats with Sen. Righter about the rampant anti-intellectualism in our district and the shift to the far right. I hate to see him hang it up when we need his reasoned balance more than ever.

First, stay well, it’s all good.
To your thoughts, and that thought specifically;
After 2020, come 2021, if the President loses, the vacuum he will leave, as no one can get away with all he says, does, is… that will be the time to measure who is what, and the party here in Illinois… to decide if they are a regional, old, angry, white, regional party, or a party that cares about towns like Charleston… as well as Naperville… and towns that yester-year were GOP of old town last too.
Honestly?
I dunno who can lead this, but I’d hope Leaders Durkin and Brady can lead the rest out of the Raunerite-Trump thinking.
This just in;
It’ll be Herculean.
They know where to find me, I hope they can find a way to find you to change these terrible ways.
