Leaving work today, I walked through the Bone Student Center on the way to my car. The amount of law enforcement is absolutely ridiculous. It’s a gubernatorial debate, not a presidential one.

I suspect Darren Bailey is going to have more punts than all of Thursday Night Football. Here’s hoping he won’t be able to get away with lying and misdirecting.

Darren Bailey has some pretty strong ties to right wing coup attempts and violent rhetoric. He’s given money to a man who “declared war” on Democrats. Bailey has also been pretty suggestive about our election results being fraudulent.

When you’re inviting someone that is pro-right wing terrorist to be on the stage I think it’s pretty fair to have security there in case some other right wing terrorists show up.

The Governor is technically correct that he has hired a large amount of troopers.

Darren Bailey’s idea is “zero based budgeting” is not really the most effective strategy for budgeting. Perhaps if you’re on a school board that competes against the private school you operate you might think that “zero based budgeting” is a good approach.

I would be surprised if there is anyone who is involved with the state budget process who would prefer doing “zero based budgeting” instead of our attempt at the “budgeting for results” approach that requires identifying metrics for creating specific outcomes.

Darren Bailey’s body language is outstanding — he looks like he thinks he’s prevailing.

I think Pritzker’s people could have done a better job with debate prep, but I can’t wait to see what Pritzker quotes wind up on tiktok.

This is the first time I have ever seen a person run for Governor on being too impotent to change policy and law. It’s one thing to watch someone that’s impotent to bluster and shoot at stacks of paper with firearms, and it’s another to have them stand in front of a state wide television audience tell them “Vote for me, I’m impotent.”

I think it’s a terrible idea to ask your opponent who is much more popular than you if they’re planning on running for President. No one is going to seek out Darren Bailey to run for any federal office after his showing in this election.

Bailey is also probably unaware of federal election law that would make it pretty inappropriate for Governor Pritzker to declare he is running for president tonight, to the point where even if he wants to he can’t say it.

Darren Bailey is just a silly, silly man who probably thinks that every time it snows it means global climate change isn’t a thing.

That’s a pretty low bar. There’s not a whole lot about Bailey’s performance so far that would make anyone who is planning to vote for him feel good about that plan. Darren Bailey is doing more to suppress conservative voter enthusiasm than anything a Democrat could come up with.

Actually Darren’s house is closer to Oskaloosa than Xenia, but then Oskaloosa is more a locale than a true town. He lives just off the Xenia-Iola Road about 6.5 miles north of Xenia.

I was raised in the region of Illinois that Bailey is from. I can assure you the viewpoints he is expressing are not indicative of the way people in that part of Illinois feel or live. Those that do are a very tiny minority.

Illinois has thousands of unfilled state employee positions and it’s negatively impacting the ability of agencies like DCFS to protect children.

I hope that everyone is realistic enough to expect that when whoever wins this election is negotiating with AFSCME that wages need to keep up with inflation to stay competitive.

35 miles south of Effingham on Rt. 45 is the intersection of Rt 50 and 45 outside of Flora. Go west about 8 miles and you’ll find Xenia.

The debate was too hurried. That said, it was confirming. Bailey offered few solutions to issues when given the opportunity, including crime, taxes, and education (his sound bites).

I think it’s really fun when a person who has inherited many acres of land and inherited an agribusiness worth millions of dollars who has accepted millions of dollars of public funds through the PPP loan programs and federal farm subsidies, et al, thinks the song “Hard Workin’ Man” by Brooks and Dunn applies to him.

Perhaps he believes he has gotten everything he owns by the sweat of his brow, and that delusion may be exactly why he has supported politicians who participated in and planned a coup attempt.

He knows the only way someone like him will have legitimacy is if people believe his lies.

This “debate” was a dorm room or playground argument, not an exchange between two mature men seeking the state’s highest office. Neither candidate distinguished himself. Neither “won” and the the state’s electorate certainly didn’t. Maybe it’s the format or the limited time available, or maybe it’s the nature of our politics now, but I don’t see how sessions like these do anyone any good. It’s sad, really, very sad. This passes for public discourse? Ugh. I think less now of both participants than I did before/

Bailey asked at one point, “Why are people still worried about their pension?” Maybe people worry because leaders like Bailey continually spew inaccurate blather about how “bad” the pension situation is and ignore that we’re improving the pension situation.

I went to North Clay Schools just like Darren. Unfortunately I have the same sort of accent myself. I cringe when I hear a recording of my own voice. Not everyone sounds like us (thankfully), but I wouldn’t say that it is uncommon in this area. My theory is that we are in an area where two regional dialects overlap, although a linguist might say I was wrong.

The entire thing was a C-. Bailey is a goof and the governor seemed distracted at times. I did nit hear one tangible idea from Bailey, he couldn’t tell you what zero based budgeting is and if he thinks you can cut $15 billion from the budget, let’s see the lines he would cut. We just went through a budget battle with Ruiner that almost completely cost us our higher education system and decimated health care. Bailey couldn’t run a lemonade stand and that is what was evident tonight.

No.

He was not internally consistent, which is what I use as a primary litmus test when I listen to people speak about their views and goals.

He loves discussing his business and how that experience means he would also be a ‘hard working man’ for the state. Yet, he didn’t want to discuss a single aspect of the school he founded because it isn’t appropriate to the discussion.

He had a similar approach with the topic of abortion as well.

His constant interruptions were the obvious flaw in his approach, but the real tell of his lack of confidence was in watching him twiddle his thumbs nervously while holding his hands at waist level on more than one occasion.

Bailey clearly does not understand public pensions and where they are headed, he especially does not understand Tier 2. He demonstrated this when he blurted out moving people to 401k’s.

Bailey was disruptive and childish, clearly not governor material.

He repeated the whole “sit down and bring people to the table” babble. I guess he doesn’t know he should have done that and come up with answers already.

Overall not a good debate. Pritzker kept his composure but missed on a few questions that should have been easy for him.

Bailey couldn’t answer even simple questions but did pander. He really failed on education, unions, and abortion.

“Stay in their lane will” haunt him.

AFSCME throws around the 7,000 unfilled positions number every chance they get and some of those positions are going to be at Revenue. There is no way the timing of a few weeks before the election can be deliberate simply because if they had tried to plan for the middle of October we wouldn’t see the actual rebate until 4 or 6 months later.

We’re at a point in state government where we can safely assume that if the timing is convenient it has to be coincidence or a happy little accident.

Tonight’s debate is not going to change any voter’s mind. Pritzker has his supporters and Bailey has his, and they’re pretty much carved in stone. The moderators did a creditable job, but you can’t expect any substantial answers in what amounts to a 30- or 60-second sound bite. Takeaways: Bailey’s solution, if elected, is to sit down and talk about things, which means gridlock, no answers, and state finances and governance seizing up, as during the Rauner years. But maybe that’s what he wants. Pritzer… well, I think Pritzker’s done a pretty good job compared to previous recent governors. That’s a low bar, but he’s at least extended the expiration date of the state of Illinois.

This is actually the most optimistic thing that Darren Bailey’s campaign can hope. The extent to which this debate will negatively impact his campaign won’t be immediately clear until the press coverage tries to summarize how things went. Bailey had an opportunity to address his claims about the holocaust and wanted to, instead, suggest that the comment being 5 years old makes it okay now.

Darren Bailey presents himself as a man who is incapable of acknowledging when he has been wrong, whether it’s on a matter of fact or a matter of principle. He is a liar who has benefited from the fact that it has often been more convenient to ignore him than it has been to take the time to address his bald face lies and misrepresentation. He is a bigot and a hate monger who has benefited from having platforms for his bigotry that tended to promote it to people who already agreed with his hateful ideology.

He believes he is God’s answer for the problems of the world because he has been allowed to ignore all of the contradictory evidence to that belief.

This debate does him no favors. He did not hold ground or hold his own. He was an embarrassment to this state and to what the Illinois Republican Party at least used to pretend to be. I am certainly not a neutral nor unbiased in my political views, but I can tell when someone performs so badly that a moderate Republican would rather not vote than vote for whatever it is Bailey is supposed to be.

Darren Bailey flirts with violent rhetoric and violent insurrectionists because deep down he knows violence is the only way someone like him can ever be the Governor of a state like Illinois and the more time he spends in the press the more that becomes clear to people who would have voted for Rauner or Edgar.

Wow! I don’t know about this debate. I feel both of them performed admirably. There was a lot of overtalking more from Bailey than the Governor. Oh snap I see him taking a shot at the Governor about him possibly running for POTUS.

1. The moderators let the debate get out of control. If you even want to call it a true debate. I would call it more of a performance than a debate.
2. Give the candidates a strict 90 seconds to answer questions and a hard 30 second response time.
3. Get rid of the audience. They didn’t follow the rules and were useless.
4. Watch the 13th Congressional District debate it you want to see a civilized debate.

The pace of this one really did feel like a gameshow early. It seemed to slow down toward the end, but 30-60 seconds isn’t enough time to get a response in. Closing statements should have been two minutes; Bailey was clearly caught off-guard there and I’m sure he didn’t want his last words to be “this man is dangerous.”

I haven’t watched a debate in the last 20 years where I felt the audience added anything except the temptation for the candidate to put on a show for those in attendance. Put these back in a TV studio and drop the audience.

This race is about as partisan as it may get. I do not condone Bailey or his policies, but I think he probably won on points at worst was a draw tonight. Nothing to make a measurable difference moving forward.

It is also much tougher to defend than someone just to point out the problems and offer little solutions.

The message/feeling is that JB is a superior candidate to DB (may be true), however on the debate stage JB did not articulate in the 30 second - frantic format. Overall, I think Bailey did point out the flaws of the JB administration. He did not offer much alternative, but Pritzker was not sharp in defending his posititions.

The most interesting thing to me were Bailey’s several self-contradictions. Example: The SAF-T act was written quickly at 4am or they were working on it for months. It can’t be both. And his promises to cut spending and also spend more on a bunch of things (or not, it wasn’t clear).

Also, why complain about the U of I president’s pay but forget to call out the pay to the basketball and football coaches? (Actually, that was a smart move on his part. He knows his base values sports over education.)

No idea if any undecideds watched the debate. But Bailey was strong, if lying, denying, and interrupting. That worked for Trump. This is a general. But the first question about crime was not handled as well as it could have been by Pritzker. May not be the top issue by the polls, but the media keeps grabbing it. If that keeps up, and Bailey keeps channeling Trump, election will be closer than expected.

wait a sec. I’m from the area Bailey is from, maybe 20 mins away. Everyone I know growing up thinks almost just like him on most issues. And they sound like him as well. He’s pretty representative of the area, as I know it. And also there are Bailey signs EVERYWHERE in that area, even in bigger towns nearby. Lots of Confederate flags too. I wouldn’t have recognized a Confederste flag as a kid. They didn’t exist in my hometown then. Makes sense considering the people in the local graveyard fought and died for the Union army.

Probably a draw. Poor attempt at debate. Both candidates had talking points they were going to inject regardless if they were relevant to the question or not. Was surprised that Bailey wasn’t called out for being a fixture at the subsidy trough and JB wasn’t called out for his plumbing decisions that allowed him to cheat on his personal state tax liability. Going to have to hold my nose and vote for one of these guys.

It was a dumb question. As the last question in what was supposed to be a serious debate for the candidates for governor in one of the largest states in the US, it was a complete waste of their time and ours. Do better for the next debate.
