* Thanks to a commenter, I checked the latest campaign finance report from Gov. Quinn and saw this…
At exactly the same time that the governor is trying to restart “Council Wars” with his counter-attacks on Tom and Dan Hynes and worshipful words about Harold Washington, Quinn’s taking $100,000 from one of the war’s chief architects, Ald. Ed Burke.
I love political irony, and this one is rich on all sides.

A botched early prison-release plan continues to haunt Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn.
Quinn’s Corrections Department acknowledges it underreported the number of inmates released early in a plan known as “MGT Push.”
Corrections updated its list — with 27 new names — Thursday night after inquiries from The Associated Press about some offenders.
Corrections now says 1,745 inmates were released early.

The first tell about whether Quinn would be a reform governor or whether all of that reform stuff he spouted was for show was when he had Ed Burke’s wife swear him in. The picture of Justice Burke swearing in Gov. Quinn was worth a thousand words.

Former Senate President Emil Jones kicked in $100,000 from his bankroll to Quinn as well.
Quinn’s really ramped up the borrowing to keep pace with Hynes.

And the trying to keep pace with hynes just further underscores that quinn’s only concern is his political campaign, not the state of illinois, which is in serious trouble if he cared to notice.
but whatever. he’s only been running for governor since last spring–almost a year ago.

I am glad to see Quinn keep consistency!!! He borrows for operations on the state side so it just comes naturally to do it on the campaign side!

yea, and the DD of Finance has absolutely nothing to do with the classification of inmates. he may have come up with the idea as a cost saving measure but tony didnt pick the inmates to be released. its his job to present ideas to keep the department within its budget not classify inmates for early release.

For better or worse, in 2006 the Democrats were able to hold their noses and avoid a circular firing squad. But this year seems to be more than making up for that. With the battle lines and alliances a bizarre mishmash to begin with, the last-minute ratcheting up of rhetoric will make for some outstanding political theater. It’ll be interesting to see whether everybody really does get back under the tent for the primary winner in time for November.

Very good ad. Despite national criticisms of biased reporting etc., I think the average citizen does trust what their hometown or regional papers suggest.

just curious… does anyone know if Quinn is backing Burke or Lozano? HW would’ve backed lozano no question, but seeing as to how dan burke’s brother just gave Quinn $100K i’m guessing quinn better not be backing lozano.

Dumping the early release blame on the finance guy is classic shooting the messenger. Then Quinn sends another half dozen pilgrims into Corrections and throws more chaos into an already difficult mess. Fire the Director and be down with it!!!

I think the fact it bashes Quinn instead of just pointing out the Hynes endorsements is interesting.

I don’t know how Harold Washington can handle keps up with his schedule of late-all these endorsements and campaign commercials. Now he is backing Lozano? He truly is a marvel-at his age and being dead and all.

Amalia, it was even nicer to hear from Alton Miller, press secretary to HW at the time in question, who taled to the Sun-Times yesterday about this matter.
and, it is worth noting that Quinn’s version of why he left the Washington administration is at odds with not only Mayor Washington, but Alton Miller’s recollection, the mayor’s press secretary back in 1987.
Given quinn’s recent significant credibility problems, I am inclined to be skeptical of his version. Can anyone with impeccable credibility corroborate his version? If so, I’m more than happy to listen and possibly be swayed.
Jacky Grimshaw prefaced her statement yesterday statement with the following: “as far as I know…”
so, she is not very helpful because she can only offer her opinion. She can neither confirm nor deny anything really.
Grimshaw oversaw intergovernmental affairs back in ‘87, and was close to Mayor Washington personally and profressionally, but so was Miller. given his position as press secretary,it could be argued that miller was in fact closer. He would’ve had closer and more intimate knowledege of the day-to-day goings on at the mayor’s office, especially where staffing issues were concerned, a press secretary functions similiarly to a chief of staff in terms of closeness to the mayor and in some cases seemingly supercedes the chief of staff. Recall how close avis lavelle was to richard m. daley when he became mayor. Consider how close jacquelyn heard is to him now; she’s his right-hand, as was lavelle.
at the chicago mayoral level, the press secretary appears to be very much a person who functions as a confidant.

For a couple of months, Hynes had a media campaign that seemed to spend a lot of money with no real focus.
No more. The 1-2 punch of the Washington ad and the endorsement ad tell a clear story of why voters should not choose Quinn and (in the second ad) why they should choose Hynes.
The second half of the ad is key. The quotes make Hynes seem like a competent fiscal steward at a time when people are worried about their jobs. (The Giannoulias ads also use that theme effectively.)
How much money does Hynes had left on hand? Do we know what kind of buys he is making for these two ads?

Quinn is reeling as the truth comes out about his lack of ability to lead and solve problems in government going back to the Washington era. Now he is showing that he doesn’t know how to run a campaign either as he blows a 25 point lead in the polls in a month.
If Harold could be asked about Quinn’s accepting giant contributions from his arch nemesis Burke he would probably just respond, “typical”.
Quinn is almost done. 12 more days!

If you like Pat Quinn, the best way to get the good version of Quinn may be to elect Hynes in the Dem primary.
That will give Quinn almost a year of being governor where he can focus on governing, not campaigning, and use the position to advance some progressive causes.
If Quinn wins the primary, we’re gonna get ten more months of Quinn the constant campaigner who is worried about doing something that will jeopardize his re-election.

Nobody belived it and some even called for Hynes to drop out of the race for governor, but now a short time from election day Quinn looks to be in serious political trouble! The Question becomes - HOW FAR WILL QUINN FALL?

Well played hit all around by Hynes camp. Credible critic, calls out Quinn’s biggest weaknesses. Attacks his black support in an election that will see relativly high involvement from the black communiity in Cook. Washington can’t respond, Quinn has to respond on a Friday afternoon. All around quality play. Now the only question is if Quinn can stop the bleeding before its too late.

Just to focus on an aspect of the emil jones jr. matter…
it is my understanding that they (quinn & jones) were not friends last year this time or in all of the years prior. it’s kinda funny how dem pols in particular turn into “buddies” seemingly on the drop of dime.
that’s why the whole dan hynes ergo propoer hoc tom Hynes was so silly on the Quinn camp’s part. (hopefully I got that right)
it’s really sad that at lastnight’s SIU debates one of moderators fell for the absurdity of it all in a question that he posed to Hynes about the Washington ad. I guess that man who asked the question is some sort of college professor.
In illinois politics on the dem side especially you can bitter enemies on Monday, but when mutual interests happily conicide, the best of friends by Tuesday.
It’s funny because from what I understand and have heard after Harold Washington died Luis Gutierrez fell right in with Burke and Vrdolyak, despite the fact that he was brought in by Harold Washington.

Will County Woman - Your question assumes that Quinn has some sort of organization, he doesn’t. It also assumes that anyone wants Quinn’s backing?
From what I’ve seen, most democrats are trying not to talk about the race for governor - there is no passion among the electorate for either candidate.
I agree that Quinn’s rebuttal to the HW ad won’t be effective. If you have to explain your attack to the voters, it’s not a good one. However, Hynes ad has video of HW calling Quinn incompetent. It’s a pretty clear message.
PADRAIG - I’m not a Hynes defender, but your post was pure baloney. Even if you don’t like the guy, you surely must know that Dan Hynes has been the Illinois State Comptroller since 1998. That qualifies him - far more than some of the GOP candidates IMHO.
Hope for Quinn’s sake he has something better coming than that worthless rebuttal, or he might be in trouble.
