*** UPDATED x1 *** Murphy has surgery to repair knee damage

Posted in:

* From the Des Plaines Patch

State Senator Matt Murphy (R-Palatine) is going into surgery this morning for a dislocated knee cap; Murphy was injured during the annual softball game between Illinois house and senate members on Wednesday in Springfield.

“Senator Murphy sustained the injury and was taken away from the field by ambulance,” said Patty Schuh, press secretary for Illinois senate Republicans. “We’ve had injuries before, but it was clear to bystanders and folks at the game his injury was serious.”

Murphy had an MRI on Thursday, which determined he would need surgery, Schuh said.

Murph’s knee cap ended up a few inches above his knee. This was no little injury.

*** UPDATE *** From the Senate GOP…

Sen. Murphy had surgery today at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights. He had extensive surgical repair for a torn patellar tendon. He is recovering at home and plans to be back at work as soon as possible.

  2. So, since this was a legislative game, and he is a legislator, does he get to collect Workers Comp?

  4. I wondered the same thing as “Just Saying” - is that a Workers Comp claim that we’re all going to pay for?

  6. Stop with the WC hysteria. It’s not as if this prevents him from working and claiming lost wages or anything. His standard health coverage will pay the bills. Last I checked, Senators don’t use their legs to press the vote button. He will likely need time to recover and rehab, but again, that’s standard sick leave.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery Senator.

  15. I’ve dislocated my knee (youch!!!!) and had surgery on it twice: first, to take out the hunk of patella that broke off in the dislocate and then again the next year to dig out a few remaining teeny bone chips. That was decades ago and absolutely no problems with it at all since then. You won’t even have a big ugly scar like I do, Sen Murphy, because they’ve greatly improved the procedure since then. Best wishes for a quick recovery. You’ll be back in full playing form in no time.

  16. Any more word (rumor, speculation) whether Sen. Murphy will run for statewide office in 2014? We hear so much about the other GOP hopefuls lately, the “any publicity is good publicity” theory got me thinking about him again. Get well soon MM!

  20. So has he been put on the 15 or the 60 day DL?

In any case, get well soon and, speaking from experience, don’t skimp on the rehab!

  21. Sounds like the old Wendell Davis (former Chicago Bear) injury suffered at Veterans Stadium years ago. Ouch.

    Get well soon, Senator!

And how jaded does one have to be that their first thought upon reading this is “Guy might file a WC claim.” Sheesh. Too much time in Springfield. Or Chicago.
