  2. To the Republican caucus, here’s how you explain the fee for SB 628. Because of both parties failure to properly fund regulatory programs, the state has to have the money to perform hospital inspections. Now inspections only occur if they are funded with federal funds. So if you or your family receives poor care and the feds don’t authorize a complaint inspection, you would be out of luck without this surcharge. The bill will also establish a mechanism to enable hospital and healthcare providers to learn from errors committed in facilities so they can adopt better procedures.

    Alas, you opposed a bill so you can tell a person calling your office to complain about poor hospital care that you saved their insurance company money by voting against a bill to tighten up the regulation of hospitals and improve patient safety. Good job. I’m sure the insurance companies appreciate your assistance. We don’t want them to pay for quality health care do we.

    Oh, forgive the criticism if you intend to rectify the situation by proposing additional funding for these programs. I can be assured of that correct.
