Brady picks Rodriguez

Posted in:

* I told subscribers about this last night…

Illinois Sen. Bill Brady will announce today that former Long Grove Village President Maria Rodriguez will be his new running mate.

— Blueroomstream (@Blueroomstream) September 17, 2013

* More

Rodriguez (53) is the former Village President of Long Grove, Illinois, and was a 2010 GOP candidate for the Congress in the 8th CD, losing in the primary to former Congressman Joe Walsh.

During her 2010 bid, Rodriguez was endorsed by conservative groups such as Concerned Women for America (CWA), Eagle Forum PAC, Susan B. Anthony and Illinois Pro Life Federation Federal. She was also endorsed by the Sun-Times and the Daily Herald.

Following her 2010 campaign, she was Executive Director of Adam Andrzejewski’s For the Good of Illinois.

* Here she is speaking at a 2010 tea party rally

Not the greatest public speaker, but that could change.

Despite her surname, Rodriguez is not a Latina. But this still has the potential to be a dramatic pick for Brady.

* And here’s a photo of Brady and Rodriguez from a 2010 Family PAC event

Shall we welcome her to the race with a caption contest?

Clever move on Brady’s part to partner with someone to attract Hispanic voters, even though she is not Hispanic. Wonder what her thoughts are on immigrant reform.

  51. “Quit grumbling, Bill, and drink your Tea Party Kool Aid!”

Seriously, does Brady think he is going to win over us Moderate Republicans with a Tea Partier for Veep?

Give it up, Bill. Your train left the Amtrak station in Uptown Normal four years ago and you missed it!

Comment by Nearly Normal Tuesday, Sep 17, 13 @ 12:37 pm

  52. “Now, the first day we’ll get shredding on the one guy’s blog, but it doesn’t matter, because none of them were ever voting for you anyway.”

Good choice by Brady. Funny how no one talks about how conservative Jill Tracy and Sue Rezin are. Brady will get hammered on the pro-life stuff in a general anyway. He lost by such a small margin last time with Plummer on the ticket with him, this is a big improvement. She can even speak without long moments of awkward silence. Bonus!

  54. Not quite-I’m married to a Hispanic. Again, and I’ll say this slowly, my husband has a Hispanic name. My name is Maria, yes, but I’m named after my grandmother, Maria Schwitcklwitz. No. That’s not a Hispanic name. No, I was born here in the US, and the Birther issue isn’t relevant in Illinois.

No. Quinn is an Irish name. Like yours.

  55. “You tell that ‘Scott Kim’ I look forward to proving who is the best #2.”

If the question is, “Who is ready to take over, and BE Governor of the State of Illinois” … I guess if Steve Kim and Maria Rodriguez could be “co-Governors”, you might have a chance.

Good move getting a foothold in Lake County, if Rodriguez can deliver real votes, and nicely done getting someone with governmental executive experience, but an 8 Precinct Muni, and being the Executive Director for Adam A., and losing to Joe Walsh while being a Tea Partier?

    Could have done … worse?

    Could have done … better.

That and it would have reduced the membership in Slytherin.

Brady must be hell bent to prove something. ‘How to finish 5th in a four candidate primary’ has the inside track so far.

    Comment by DanL60 Tuesday, Sep 17, 13 @ 5:01 pm

  64. While she does not seem to be a compelling choice for the second sport on the ticket, she is from the Suburbs; an area Brady needs to perform better in this time around if he is going to make up the large Cook County backing Governor Quinn can expect for him next November. On balance, she seems neither to harm nor especially help Brady’s chances in 2014. Happy Constitution Day!

Comment by Downstater Tuesday, Sep 17, 13 @ 5:04 pm

  65. I’m not sure, as she’s not ACtually Hispanic, how much this will really help him, as it EVen seems a bit disingenuous. However, he will benefit at least somewhat from having a respectable Woman/Former Public Official from the Collar County Area of Chicagoland on the Ticket no matter what…

Comment by Just The Way It Is One Tuesday, Sep 17, 13 @ 7:42 pm

  66. How dare Bill Brady say Dillard and Rauner have “Rino” problems? Brady has HUGE ultra-right wing problems that are hurt even more by his selection of an ultra-right wing running mate. That duo will never attract mainstream Illinois residents or moderate women voters.
