A clue or a hack?

Posted in:

* This was posted on “Da Speaker’s” Twitter account and was then quickly deleted

The identity of “Da Speaker” has been a mystery for months. S/He’s a pretty funny person, whoever it is. A recent chuckler

Free advice: Mr Rauner should purchase only reputable assassins. IL Policy Institute/IL News Net don't qualify.

* Anyway, “President Klickna” referenced in the deleted Tweet is the Illinois Education Association’s President Cinda Klickna. Could Da Speaker be with the IEA? I asked IEA spokesperson Charlie McBarron via e-mail if either he or his union are involved…

Hi Rich:

Wow. We just put that video up on our site about 45 minutes ago.

No, sorry. We aren’t him.

I hope this increases our views though.

Charlie

* And then this appeared…

Is there anything as annoying as a hacker? Let me assure you, you will be discovered.

Hacked? Yeah, right.

Wasn’t that Chief Keef’s excuse?

* I then e-mailed Illinois Issues’ Jamey Dunn, who profiled Da Speaker in a recent piece, and asked whether she’d seen the Tweets. She hadn’t, but she did say this…

I was just talking to somebody the other day about how the parody account thing could be pretty tricky just for that reason. It would probably be easy to fire off a tweet from the wrong account.

Yep.

I sent Da Speaker a direct message via Twitter. I’ll let you know if I get a response.

  3. Format of the suspect “Da Speaker” account mirrors that used on the IEA’s “official” twitter feed. see - https://twitter.com/ieanea/status/396031659495010304

  4. Also, based on the timestamps of the tweet and the video, the tweet in question came minutes after the video was uploaded. So if it was a “hacker,” then it’s an usually bored hacker who is keeping a very close eye on the IEA’s vimeo channel.

  5. I think in the biz they call this “Pulling a Weiner” in honor of New York May…sorry, former Congressman Anthony, who initially denied tweeting pics (we all know of what) claiming it was a hack.

  6. It’s like typing a quick email and the auto fill puts in an address you did not intend and you send the email w/o looking back up at the addressee. Sending my mother emails intended for my wife can get embarrassing.

  7. Downside is that “Da Speaker” might stop posting…

  8. Is it wrong that I almost don’t want to know?

    Just keep those tweets coming.

  9. I don’t know about Chief Keef, but it was the excuse of Anthony Weiner.

  10. Willy, always have to be careful with the “parody accounts” that’s for sure.

Will be fun to see what happens from here.

  11. I would look into to whoever handles social media for the IEA. I manage several twitter accounts for different orgs through tweetdeck, and could easily send a tweet from the wrong account.

Safety is the #1 concern. Using multiple devices is a good way to be careless.

    Thanks.

  13. Pseudonym pro tip: When operating multiple accounts, have two web browsers — Firefox & Chrome — and use one ONLY for your original account and the second ONLY for the additional account. And in the immortal words of the Ghostbusters, “Don’t cross the streams!”

Pseudonym hygiene takes a bit of discipline and practice but it’s worth the effort.
