One of the better congressional ads of the year

Posted in:

* Press release…

U.S. Rep. Mike Bost released the second television advertisement in his re-election campaign for Illinois’ 12th Congressional District, titled “Belleville Boot.” The ad, narrated by Belleville Boot Company President Mark Ferguson, highlights Bost’s successful efforts to stop a federal rule change that would have made it more difficult for the company to compete with big corporations for supplying boots to our men and women in uniform.

“When Washington politicians tried to change the rules and put big businesses ahead of a Southern Illinois job creator, I went down to the House floor and helped stop them,” said Bost. “Because we were successful, Belleville Boot Company will remain one of the largest providers of military boots in the nation. That’s the type of positive result that hardworking Southern Illinois families deserve.”

* The ad

* Script…

FERGUSON: “Belleville is a family owned small business. We’re the oldest and leading manufacturer of boots for the US military. The large billion dollar companies were trying to bully the small businesses and eliminate our ability to win contracts. Mike Bost went right to work for us. As a Marine he’s pretty ferocious. He attacked the problem right away and he got it resolved. We’re going to be able to win more contracts now and we’re going to employ more people in this area. When you need a fighter, you need someone like Mike Bost in your corner.”

BOST: “I’m Mike Bost and I approve this message.”

That’s what I call standing up for your constituents. Pretty darned effective ad, if you ask me, even if it is an ever so slight bending of the truth.

  3. Mel Price, Jerry Costello, and Bill Enyart were all respectful and supportive of maintaining this company as a successful and profitable vendor to our military.

    Nothing new here except Bost is using it to promote his reelection in what may be a very competitive race.

  4. As solid as they get. Everyone can relate and it’s all about what a public official CAN do.
    Really good.

  5. This is a timely ad. I read a story in USA Today that a Tennessee company with a government contract to make boots for the military got into trouble when they imported the uppers from China and assembled the parts in Tennessee. They had the Chinese sew in a “Made in USA” label that was covered with a tear away “made in China” label.

  6. Good ad, great boots.

  7. I checked out the company’s site, under the “about” section it goes through their history and talks about their expansion adding 2 more factories in Arkansas. Not a shocker they are expanding in a much more business friendly state. At least we get the hq and the tax revenue I guess.

  8. Illini, Mel Price and Jerry Costello never had to work for votes. Nothing new here except another example of Republicans making inroads in formerly Democrat-dominated Metro East districts.

    Great Ad. More people would be less sour on politicians if they could run more of these ads than what Kirk and Duckworth are throwing at each other. Of course, you have to have success like this to make it a good, believable ad. There’s that…

  9. Little things like this promotion can make a big difference to a U.S. based business. I still have my black leather made in U.S.A. boots from the Ronald Reagan era, and there is no question that they are of much better construction than the crummy foreign made tan desert boots we got in the Bill Clinton NAFTA 1990s.

  10. @LessAnon - I agree with you and also agree this is a good ad.

    Now if only we could see some of the same in the Rauner funded ads for his minions running for the GA against Forby, Bradley et al

  11. This is a positive ad, no screaming, no over the topic rhetoric, just a story about a business in his district and what he did to help them.

    We need more ad’s like this.
