Durbin: “No ambitions to run for any other office”

Posted in:

* Tom Kacich scored an interesting and frank interview with US Sen. Dick Durbin and it ends like this

Durbin also said he is not interested in challenging Rauner in 2018.

“I’m where I want to be. In the Senate is where I want to be. I have no ambitions to run for any other office,” he said.

  4. At least that rumor has been put to bed. If recent history is any guide, the next names to pop up will be Lisa Madigan and Tammy Duckworth, whether or not they’ve given any indication of interest.

  5. No one wants to leave the US Senate. It’s like living in a 5 star Hotel.

  6. Well, that changes my tactics a bit. It’s a long haul siege. That actually helps me in the short term. It makes AFSCME all the more motivated to take advantage of the advantages that we have now on Nov 8th. If Rauner is going to be around till 2022, we’ve got to make the gains each election and then dig our heals in the dirt. Like a shield wall we’re going to have to push in unison, gain some ground then not give it up. Well, at least we now know what we’re facing.

  9. Durbin was the only Democrat that could clear the field for himself.

I never understood why Durbin would want a race with Rauner. It’s not the cushy senate thingy, why face $80-90 million to destroy your persona and legacy?

    Nope. You don’t.

  11. Durbin’s position is understandable but disappointing. A possible cabinet position in the Clinton administration would be a nice cap to a great career.
I don’t see anyone on the Dem bench that can take on Rauner and all his money. That’s depressing.

  12. There is a guy on South Pulaski who is likely gonna care much more about the gubernatorial election in 2018 than he did in 2014 — 2021 there will be redistricting. For all the vitriol from certain camps, what has kept him in power is not the wielding of that power but a keen understanding of the mapping process and a great ground game.

No way Clinton appoints him. Dems will not give up a Senate seat to let Rauner add a Republican to replace Durbin.

    True:

    It says something about Daniels
And most certainly says something about that map.

  17. It’s say Madigan is Bear Bryant…

He could take yours, and beat his, and he could take his and beat yours.

That’s what it says. Recruitment, micro understanding, using changes in districts to an advantage, choosing races wisely.

Rauner’s own reelection will get a huge boost with a primary on the Democratic side.

    Being a congressman doesn’t.
    Durbin knows this.

  21. ==Geez, what a victim.===

Wrong conclusion. Madigan was always several laps ahead of Daniels.

That map was drawn first to preserve a GOP Senate. Within those boundaries, the House seats were drawn to make it too easy on some House members who didn’t want to or know how to work, and to the detriment of GOP chances on the “other side” of many districts.

Incompetence on the GOP side completely. I have no idea how that = victim. I’m criticizing my own party for poor skills and lack of ambition. That’s a huge reason why we are where we are today. Not a victim. Not rationalizing. Acknowledging the idiocy of it all.

  29. I’m with OW. The biggest problem for the Dems is not so much losing Durbin as their nominee in general election, it’s losing Durbin as a field-clearing candidate in the primary.

A costly, bloody, multi-candidate Dem primary is great news for Rauner. It might even result in Pat Quinn being the nominee.

As a Dem, I wish Madigan/Cullerton/Rahm/labor/trial lawyer etc. would agree to back a “slated” candidate to help discourage a damaging primary. But that’s probably a pipe dream. I’m just not sure who that candidate would be.

Indeed, it does. Pate Philip held the Illinois Senate for a decade with the same GOP map.

Since he won’t be up for re-election to the Senate until 2020, I guess we’ll just have to wait with bated breath for the 2022 gubernatorial.

  38. Sen. Dick Durbin should move to California and run for one of the senate seats out there. Both Cal. senators have said they will not run for reelection. Dick has lost his Midwestern values long ago. Being passed over by his colleges for the top leadership position shows he does not command the respect in Washington for his seniority to be of great help for Illinois.

Comment by Rollo Tomasi Tuesday, Oct 18, 16 @ 1:56 pm

  39. Deft: As you spend some time watching and listening, you will learn that Madigan’s support of any candidate for Governor, is not a determining factor, (except for maybe Lisa). He was not a Blago fan, for instance.

  40. An attractive popular intelligent black ex-first lady running against Rauner? Lisa would be out of the race, and all of Rauner’s money wouldn’t stop her. Don’t agree with some of her husband’s policies, but I would vote for her over Rauner.
