One of Trump’s claims about Chicago murders doesn’t check out

Posted in:

* Remember this from yesterday?

PRESIDENT TRUMP: But so far they have been unable. It’s been going on for years. And I wasn’t president. So, look, when President Obama was there two weeks ago making a speech, very nice speech. Two people were shot and killed during his speech. You can’t have that. […]

They weren’t shot at the speech. But they were shot in the city of Chicago during his speech. What — what’s going on?

* Buzzfeed checked into it

Chicago Police, however, told BuzzFeed News there were no fatal shootings in the city on Jan. 10, the day the former president gave the speech.

A police record of shootings in the city that day provided to BuzzFeed News also shows no shootings from about 8 to 9 p.m. while Obama spoke. According to the records, five shootings were reported in Chicago on the day of Obama’s visit, but none of the victims were fatally wounded.

* So did the Tribune

According to the Tribune database, the city had no slayings for about 24 hours before and after Obama’s speech, which lasted from 8:02 to 8:53 p.m. A man was shot about 20 minutes after the speech about eight miles away in the West Side’s Lawndale neighborhood, but that victim survived, according to Police Department data.

Calls and emails seeking comment from the White House media affairs office were not immediately returned.

  1. C’mon, Trump, you hardly need to guild the lily on violence in Chicago.

  2. Ooda-Looper in Chief. Keeps us so busy talking about his lying that we don’t pay attention to what he is actually doing.

  3. A collective yawn. So what?

Trump’s misstatement does not change the basic fact that Chicago’s murder rate and crime statistics are an international embarrassment and Emanuel has mismanaged the Police Department since taking office in 2011.

  4. Really? That’s the issue? Some people want to focus on the carnage in Chicago not conforming precisely enough to the timeline mentioned by the President?

What a bunch of petty little nitpicks. It’s no wonder Hillary lost and it’s no wonder the Democratic Party is so decimated. It’s not even a national party anymore. Sad.

  5. Rich,

Are you claiming that our fair President would offer something as facts without being fully informed? That he would say something based off anything less that a deep, profound understanding of what it is he is talking about? That he would use uncited, unverified, widely disputed, or simply inaccurate (otherwise known as “alternate”) facts?

    Perish the thought.

  7. “Calls and emails seeking comment from the White House media affairs office were not immediately returned.”

This will be the meme for the next four years, or until Trump finally has one tantrum too many.

  8. Trump lies. He says whatever he wants to bolster whatever his point. We need to get used to that. It’s going to happen every day, multiple times a day, for however long he stays in office. And even if you point out the truth, he will ignore it.

  9. “The media should be embarrassed and humiliated and keep its mouth shut and just listen for awhile,” Steve Bannon said during a rare interview with The New York Times on Wednesday.

CNN also reports Bannon, Trump’s chief strategist, also said “I want you to quote this,” Bannon told the Times. “The media here is the opposition party. They don’t understand this country. They still do not understand why Donald Trump is the president of the United States.”

A 2 million voter majority also doesn’t understand, Mr. Bannon. When it comes to telling the truth, Trump makes Richard Nixon look like George Washington.

  10. So we are arguing about fatality. There were 5 shootings in a single day. This. Is. A. Problem!

Comment by SoILL Friday, Jan 27, 17 @ 10:23 am

  11. I don’t know what to think. Is he not use to being fact checked or he figures with the all shootings in Chicago that he was sure at least two killings were have occurred in any one hour period. Or is a plan to get people chasing rabbits on his outlandish statements instead of focusing on more critical items?

With the way he is vilified the media, you can bet they will be checking each statement he makes.

  12. As soon as this part of the Trump interview with ABC came out in the full transcript it was proven at best inaccurate if not a lie. But the true believers of Trump remain faithful.

  13. I worked in a level 1 trauma unit many of the shooting victims die weeks or months later in ICU. It’s too early to tell.

  14. Trump lied about something? Who’d a thunk…

  15. Nitpicking?

Lying and making up alternate facts is a character flaw. If he’ll lie about little things, he’ll lie about big issues. By the way, I am neither Democrat nor Republican.

  16. ==Really? That’s the issue? Some people want to focus on the carnage in Chicago not conforming precisely enough to the timeline mentioned by the President?

What a bunch of petty little nitpicks. It’s no wonder Hillary lost and it’s no wonder the Democratic Party is so decimated. It’s not even a national party anymore. Sad.===

People’s ability to just dismiss the President of the United States blatantly lying over and over will never not be disturbing to me.

I agree that this lie doesn’t change the fact that violence in Chicago is a problem that needs addressing. But to argue that when people complain when the President blatantly lies over and over again is nitpicking is ridiculous.

Comment by Sox Fan Friday, Jan 27, 17 @ 11:07 am

  17. === What a bunch of petty little nitpicks. ===

When the President states a purported fact about Chicago, why is it petty nitpicking to point out his error?

  18. I wish Trump would come to Illinois and teach you all how to balance a budget!

  19. Hardly anything Trump actually says checks out, but I’m sure it’s just a conspiracy since both media and facts are slanted against him.

    He’s gone bankrupt multiple times.

  21. Also, remember this thread when Trump presents his first federal budget, ’cause it ain’t gonna be balanced.

  22. ==Trump’s misstatement does not change the basic fact that Chicago’s murder rate and crime statistics are an international embarrassment and Emanuel has mismanaged the Police Department since taking office in 2011.==

Yup, it’s a complex problem that will be no easier to solve with misinformation out there. And if you want to argue that this detail is unimportant, than your problem is with the President who stated it.

Comment by Arsenal Friday, Jan 27, 17 @ 11:18 am

  23. He was clearly wrong about this matter … but has done much to bring attention to the endemic violence in Chicago.

What exactly did Obama do to address Chicago’s violence? Heck, what did he do, at all, for Chicago or Illinois?

  25. Trump’s supporters don’t care that he’s a chronic liar.

The guy built his base of support on the Obama birther lie. He peddled that Ted Cruz’s father was in on the JFK assassination. Those are not only lies, but loony lies. His supporters don’t care.

Comment by wordslinger Friday, Jan 27, 17 @ 12:22 pm

  26. Since this seems to be partly an open thread about the president, I’ll say he deserves a chance - to meet the minimum ethical standards that have been the norm for previous presidents. That starts with releasing his tax returns. Please go to https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/ and sign the petition for him to do that.

  27. Am I wrong in believing much of the violence in Chicago is a fight over drug turf?

Is Chicago the Midwest hub for drug distribution?

I hear a lot of talk about the murder problem, but little about the drug problem.

Somebody please correct me if that’s not the case.

Comment by Streator Curmudgeon Friday, Jan 27, 17 @ 2:12 pm

  28. It is an awful lie! How dare Trump misstate the number of murders and shootings in Chicago on a given calendar day!

It is nothing at all like the tiny fib told by our beloved former president to the nation about being able to keep our own doctors and saving money on healthcare insurance premiums under the Affordable Care Act.

stunned why this twist of fate didn’t came about earlier!
    I bookmarked it.
