Chris Kennedy’s campaign for governor announced today that it continues to gain momentum from supporters throughout Illinois, having received nearly 6,000 contributions totaling about $1.79 million since the campaign launched earlier this year, with more than $700,000 of that coming in the second fundraising quarter.
The announcement comes on the same day that the campaign named Bill Daley as campaign finance chairman. Daley, former U.S. Secretary of Commerce under President Bill Clinton, served more recently as Chief of Staff to President Barack Obama.
“Illinois residents’ votes aren’t for sale. They won’t replace one billionaire for another. That’s why thousands of Illinois residents contributed to Chris Kennedy’s campaign,” Daley said. “Chris is the only candidate ready to bring fundamental change to Springfield and restore the promise of the American Dream to Illinois families. The latest poll numbers, coupled with the fundraising progress to date from across the state, proves that Chris has the support to do just that.”
The poll, released last week, shows that without spending any money on advertisements, Kennedy leads the race by 6 points at 44 percent.
* The campaign filed its report on paper last night because it had some software issues. The filing shows he raised $704K and spent $652K, a very high burn rate. Chris appears to be the only Kennedy family member who has trouble raising money.
He sure knows how to spend it, though. Compare his money raised and money spent to Daniel Biss, for instance…

Biss’s fundraising and cash-on-hand is pretty good considering he is running against a Kennedy and a Pritzker. I am thoroughly impressed. Even if he (likely) does not survive the primary he has surely shown that he will be a future player and will be ready to compete statewide in 2020 or 2022. He would be a good U.S. Senate candidate when Dick Durbin retires.

Man, Biss raised more and spent less then Kennedy. That’s the type of fiscal responsibility I’m looking for in a candidate/S
Anyway another step in the slow decline of Kennedy, he’s going to fight to stay in first but at some point JB will overtake him. I assume of course, crazier things have happened

Not good numbers at all from Kennedy. But he clearly delayed payments from the 1st quarter that showed up on this one.
Also, there are a lot of big money people on his D-2 (Lester Crown, Dan Levin, etc), which says to me that he’s just making the full ask. He’ll have to do better… or he can’t win.

For me, this is more signaling and preparation…
Kennedy is going to need $8-10 million to honestly compete, and build a significant ground game to feed off the 44% that Kennedy had at a baseline.
Now, Pritzker, if these monies are used to go very negative, direct negative to Rauner, and use the “bounce” of the AFL-CIO endorsement to build infrastructure with the AFL-CIO… and protect GA Dems… all the while doing all this spending as a signal that Pritzker isn’t going anywhere, if anything, digging in deeper… and preparing for stormier weather ahead, and also preparing to show off that infrastructure by feeding it the needed monies for that growth.
Gotta figure that Pritzker will get close to that $50 million when March finally comes, but this $12… this is groundwork and signaling that that $50 million is no joke, and it’s going to be spent to do the job that needs to be done.
We’ll see how it plays.===
It played poorly for Kennedy.
Kennedy is $7-8 million short, and that 44% name ID starting now, which should be noted it’s also been stagnant, is going to be hurting to stop Pritzker and Biss in growing, and won’t be helping Kennedy build and solidify that 44%.
It’s embarrassing for Kennedy.
Like “run to the elevator and hide” embarrassing.

I offer up the “CFE Rule” for anyone running for Governor of Illinois…
If you don’t have more cash on hand by the July before the March Primary than CFE has had parked… you can’t be taken seriously.
The exception, (because this is a “rule”) is if a self-funder with widely acknowledged liquid assets that can pass “CFE” with a phone call and an EFT.
That’s not Pawar.

Not a good showing for Kennedy. That fundraising is as flat as a month old open can of coke. And bringing on Bill Daley doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence and kind of ironic bringing on another big family name after trying to reinvent himself as a political outsider.

Sorry, thats lots of money going to outside consulting from Kennedy. Also, very little support from people with the last names Kennedy, Shriver, lawford, or smith. Also, very little support from people in the Kennedy political world from MA and elsewhere. Just poor effort all the way around.

Kennedy needs to pick a lane. As I’ve said for months, Mr. Outsider is an absurdly hypocritical look for him as he originally tried to be Mr. Insider. Someone needs to ask every Dem candidate their plans for addressing the budget in advance of their nomination. Given the influence of public unions on the Dem side it would be nice to know how they think they can be any better at addressing pensions and state spending requirements along with appropriate revenue availabilties. I think they will all see that Rauner isn’t causing our fiscal problems and that whoever is the next governor will face the same realities

If it’s supposed to be a Pritzker v Biss race, doesn’t Biss need to start showing up in polls? Double digits would be nice. I haven’t seen the Kennedy poll but if Pritzker and Kennedy combine for 84 points, that means Biss is probably no more than 5 percent. He needs to show he has some appeal outside of Evanston and the North Shore.

I’ll save you the trouble: Each candidate will regurgitate “progressive income tax” and get everyone to think only millionaires (ie someone else) will pay more under the new structure. Then they will offer zero guarantee that the brackets won’t trickle down to the not-so rich because once the progressive tax pandora’s box is opened, they won’t have to answer to anyone.

His continued “slow and steady” growth, both in financials and organization is something to take quite seriously, and when petition time rolls around, we avian will see if Team Biss can continue to show growth and the upward arrow seen with the filing.

Glenn Poshard, who’s helping the democratic county chairs as a speaker, served with Bill Daley on the transition team. That group wasn’t a partisan group - it was bi partisan, non partisan.

Lots of money on research. Sometimes that’s enough to knock out the competitors if it pans out the right way. Of course I’m sure there is plenty of research about Kennedy also.
