“Speaker Madigan and President Cullerton continue to delay putting the education funding legislation on my desk. Until then, I am unable to change the legislation so that it’s fair and equitable for all schoolchildren in Illinois and the taxpayers who foot the bill.
“Our schools cannot wait.
“If the Democrat majority won’t send me the bill, I’m hopeful they’re willing to negotiate with their colleagues to achieve the same result by July 31.
“I have asked key Republican lawmakers to reach out to their Democrat colleagues to negotiate in good faith so an alternative can be presented by July 31.
“If a reasonable compromise that is in the best interest of our children isn’t reached, I will move forward with my amendatory veto on Monday as planned.”
Perhaps the big brains figured out that angrily referring to an offer to negotiate as “outrageous” probably wasn’t the greatest PR move ever?
And nice job throwing Sen. Barickman under the bus yesterday.

*** UPDATE *** Pritzker campaign…
Two days ago, Bruce Rauner was asked if he was willing to meet and negotiate Senate Bill 1, and his response was just as baffling as you’d expect: “Don’t you see how outrageous that is?” He then one upped that comment by telling Republican legislators yesterday that a “revolution” is coming.
However, the failed governor changed gears and today is suddenly calling on “key” legislators to negotiate the school funding bill for him. It appears that neither Rauner nor his new extremist staff will take part in those negotiations. All the while, schools across the state face the possibility of not opening this fall.
“While Bruce Rauner fantasizes about his ‘revolution,’ Illinois parents and children want to know that their schools will open in a few weeks,” said Pritzker campaign spokeswoman Jordan Abudayyeh. “Instead of signing SB 1, all we’re getting from Rauner is a staunch refusal to negotiate and a renewed promise to veto school funding. Don’t you see how outrageous that is?”

Something must have finally sunk in to their brains about their limited powers to make changes. This should be “Exhibit U” for why term limits are a bad idea. When you have inexperienced people in power, you waste time.

So… will the 10K be awarded to the Republican legislator who does the best job negotiatin’??? And, did Rauner give the Republican caucus the keys to the vault where the secret AV plan is stored, or do they have to try and do a “Barickman” on that as well with the Dems?

I thought he would want to negotiate before the bill officially reaches his desk. Have the agreed upon changes in the bill that reaches his desk. Then he can sign it and look like a winner.
The amendatory veto could still fail.

I’m confused. So Barrickman was right the first time? Is he withdrawing his clarification or will he be issuing a new clarification to clarify that he didn’t need to issue the first clarification and he stands by his initial statement which has now been clarified?

Outrageous or not - this whole dispute is boiling down to a fight over $145m according to the Gov’s own website. Hasn’t Rauner donated almost as much to his political career? If he really cares this much, just cut the check. It would be worth more than anything he’s actually accomplished so far in office.

Rauner doesn’t know how to govern at all. If the dems gave him the bill before this press release he would of already did an amendatory veto so why all of a sudden now after declining the leaders meeting is he interested in negotiations? Before he said there was nothing to talk about until the bill reaches his desk. A true leader would see all ways to compromise before a bill reaches his desk.

I don’t even know how to describe the governor to people anymore. His message has been absolutely horrid the last few weeks and he changes posture on this bill every day. Not even blaming new staff just don’t think he will ever know what he wants if he wants anything at all.

To add to RNUG, I get the impression that Rauner and crew did not understand the AV process or its potential consequences.
Like they thought they could just carve out the $200M for Chicago and the rest would stand, without an agreement from Dems.

Let the pettiness of “Democrat majority” not go unremarked, either. So, when the inevitable calls for civility and bipartisanship ring out once again, please remember the GOP can’t even manage the bare minimum of it in the words they say in floor debate and put into press releases. No accident, it’s quite deliberate.
It’s Democratic Party, Democratic majority, Democratic Caucus, etc.

Whether Rauner has a great staff or a terrible one, the bottom line is that he is the one responsible for his decisions. I’m not sure he has ever fully realized that.

I remember the early days in Rauner’s term when many folks (including myself) thought he was doing ooda-loops to gain political ground. Now, it seems as if his actions are more the result of lack of political skill.

I would not want to be one the R’s sent into negotiate. The Gov hasn’t publicly said what he would back. The R’s did their negotiating n the legislative process, so the only one they would be repping in negotiations is the Gov.
Maybe I am imagining things but I thought he said that he would have people’s backs in the early days of his admin. Turns out it was just for sticking knives in.

Stop the presses. Hold it a minute. Did Bruce Rauner use the word negotiate? Did he really use that word in front of people? Could the compromise that Sen. Cullerton wanted really happen. What Pelonski said is right. He is and will be responsible if SB1 fails and he can’t duck that. He finally must have listened to someone. Here’s hoping.

Someone on the 16th floor must have talked with someone who actually understands process.
If he AV’s and it’s not accepted and override doesn’t occur there is no school funding.
Governor Rauner vetoed the money for your children to go to school.
It’s a nice contradiction to Mrs. Rauner’s “Bruce cares about education”

If you’re not wholly embarrassed for Mr. Barickman, you may have missed his comment… then “clarification”… then Rauner making the “thing” Barickman thought needed clarifying… “real”… that may be on you.
I can’t recall a prop be tossed about, and that prop’s credibility be dismissed so freely.
I think the next surprise by me would be if Mr. Barickman is “upset” by his own treatment.
What some will do for relevancy?

In a war of attrition, more GOP represented school districts close early. CPS will stay open; Rahm will find a way. Superintendents from districts forced to close will tell their parents they support SB1 as fair to their district and the Bailout claim is mostly political rhetoric; but in any case not worth closing their school over it. Then the AV gets overridden after a needless battle that is more about ideology and dividing the State than substance.
This is only a battle worth fighting for ideologues who care nothing about the near-term consequences of their actions. So in that case, Bruce is all-in thru 2018; but if schools close, Repeal & Replace the GOP sentiment could overwhelm Because Madigan. Bruce has an F*n’ problem in 2018 regardless, hopefully he doesn’t take the rest of the GOP down with him.

Lack of experience in government, lack of understanding of the legislative process, the inability to comprehend the concept of negotiation and unbridled hubris has derailed the governor’s plan to reshape the state into a corporate utopia. Maybe he can tell us how he plans to move forward and accomplish something. Perhaps articulating a plan might help him get a better understanding of what it will take to succeed. Or he can continue to launch personal attacks on the people who control the house and the senate. Hmmm, what will he do?

I will say this once again. Rauner cares about nothing except the next election. Perhaps he has finally come to the realization (Like O W says) he is going to own this, no matter how it turns out. Parents will only remember the veto that stop their children’s education. if he does the AV, he is in a no win situation. He is going to get the blame no matter what he says, or who he tries to toss under the bus.

On the Pritzker side, it might be advised to learn that you’ll strike out less if you don’t swing at every single pitch.
