Speaker Michael J. Madigan issued the following statement Monday:
“House Democrats will continue to reach across the aisle and work with legislative Republicans in order to enact bipartisan education funding reform. Every child in Illinois deserves a great education, but too many are being held back by one of the most unfair funding formulas in the country, and the reform we need is being held back by a governor who is determined to pit one child against another for political gain.
“Democrats know that many legislative Republicans share our commitment to fair funding for all schools. We will work together on behalf of our children, our schools and our communities, even if the governor continues to choose chaos over compromise.”

A comprehensive overhaul of Illinois’ worst-in-the-nation school funding system was delivered to Gov. Bruce Rauner on Monday. The legislation (Senate Bill 1) is the product of years of work and months of intense negotiations. No school in Illinois loses funding under this plan.
Illinois Senate President John J. Cullerton issued the following statement.
“By merely signing his name the governor can deliver on his promise to overhaul the worst school funding system in the nation. This reform has been 20 years in the making. I encourage Governor Rauner to make it law. Students, parents, teachers and taxpayers have waited long enough. This is a chance to make a huge, meaningful change for Illinois. This is an opportunity to make Illinois more competitive and more compassionate. I hope the governor will seize the opportunity. Do the right thing, Mr. Governor, sign the bill.”

Chicago Democrats do not deserve to be rewarded for their continued poor behavior. They get the schools in financial hot water every 10-20 years and expect the state or their cash fairy godmother to come bail them out. Other districts in the state manage to get by with much less revenue per child. Why can’t Chicago? Too weak to do the right thing. Thought Rahm would be tougher. Guess not.

You can’t say…
“Dems and Chicago get what they deserve… ”
… then say Rauner’s veto was the Dems fault.
You can’t have a “punishment” given passively by a purposeful veto people cheer.

SB1 is suppose to be about giving all children in IL the best education possible. All of the children in Chicago also deserves the best education possible. Our children’s education should not be a part of any political game by either party.

Based on his statement, it sounds like the Senate President has ruled out reaching a negotiated compromise with the Governor and the Republicans.

Veto it Governor. Make the Democrats override so they can explain to their constituents and their children downstate and in the suburbs why kids in the city are more important than the kids in their own districts. Chicago can fix their own schools. They just choose not to every 10-20 years when they’ve created another mess.

With no reforms in how the CPS is run, it will be like throwing Illinois tax payers money down a black hole. But the democrats are known for taxing and spending tax money without reforms.

No. Keep up.
The play is to, which is more than possible, have even the acceptance of the AV fail.
Rauner then has the bill completely fail.
This idea that Dems can…
1) Override… (Doubtful w/o Repubs)
2) Accept the AV (why be put in a position to choose who wins?)
The political play is failure, even on the AV, and let Rauner’s purposeful veto be the “thing” that hurt illinois’ K-12 students.

We are all one state. Chicago school children may someday move out of Chicago. Do you want them educated enough to hold down a job outside of Chicago or drawing unemployment benefits and begging for dollars in Lake Forest?
If you don’t like CPS’ management of their pension fund, absorb it into TRS since that is so wonderfully managed.

If Rauner vetoes SB1, there’s no way he can claim he’s doing this for the children. I hope Mrs. Rauner doesn’t follow up with another commercial claiming they do care about education.

Bot the Senate President and the Speaker mentioned last week that the Governor’s AV could be challenged in court if it appears to overstep his authority. Clearly the legislature would have standing to file such a challenge. Do any outside groups or individuals have it?

A veto is the best things for the Dems. Rauner doesn’t have the support to get the AV passed. If he thought he’d be overridden, like the tax hike, there aren’t the votes for that either. Yet who’s name is on the veto and called negotiating outrageous? Isn’t that outrageous.
Governing is so hard.

The real problem is the money is there, and he doesn’t want to use it for it’s intended purpose. Rauner would rather hurt school children, and use the money in a different way. I know he said each district would get more money, but he has lied before, and he will do it again. Trust counts, and he has none from anyone. I find it hard to believe that even the Republicans feel they can believe or trust this guy.

Replace the word Democrats with Republicans and this is nearly the same quote from Sen. Rose on May 31st. Laughable.
“The Democrats are notorious for claiming there is progress when, in fact, in the actual negotiations they express no interest in actually moving the ball forward and coming to an agreement.” (Sen. Barickman).

I think Cullerton has made it clear there probably won’t be an override vote. Or obviously a concurrence vote.
The bill will be vetoed, the veto will stand.
Rauner will kill school funding reform, and he’ll have until September 1 to come up with an evidence-based, bipartisan plan before downstate schools start sending out layoff notices to teachers and downstate parents start scurrying to come up with child care.

I don’t normally agree with the BGA but they are now working with POLITIFACT Illinois…
“Numbers are sure to fly fast and furious as Rauner and lawmakers duke this out in Springfield in the days ahead, but we find Rauner’s generalization that SB 1 is a “bailout” for Chicago schools to be False.”
