Wednesday, August 16th would be Governor’s Day at the Illinois State Fair.
The Senate did the same thing in 2015.
Those guys really know how to kill a party. And it’ll be even worse for the governor if they run his AV on a separate bill and it goes down in flames.
*** UPDATE *** I’m flashing back to the House floor vote on Rod Blagojevich’s Gross Receipts Tax. That one went down 107 to 0 with 7 voting “Present”…
But Illinois House Republican Leader Jim Durkin called the scheduling “no coincidence.”
“They just didn’t pick this date out of thin air. They know it’s Republican Day. I think the whole point is to create some type of controversy for the day. And this is old school. It comes out of the old playbook. We’ll deal with it,” Durkin said. […]
Brown said the House will be addressing a potential override of Rauner’s amendatory veto of the school funding bill, as well as a House amendment which replicates Rauner’s veto. That amendment was discussed during a lengthy House hearing on Wednesday morning in Chicago.
“We’ll look at the school funding situation. We’re probably going to look at both, the override and the amendment. A lot of it is up to the sponsors of Senate bill 1. So we’ll look at the amendment, see how things develop. There have been talks along the way. I think those are continuing.”

The level of infantile behavior just keeps getting worse and worse. They all need to be replaced, leaders who play these games and the rank and file who keep voting the leaders into their positions.

“The old playbook” is one of my favorite ILGOP dog whistles. Usually it’s “the Daley playbook.” I’ve always wanted to get my hands on this playbook. Seems like it would be full of wisdom and trickery.

If your talking points include no NCSL, or no vacations, it is hard to push any outrage for scheduling session on a state fair party day.

I’ve had conversations with a number of Republican representatives who told me they requested this particular day because they wanted to avoid being seen in public with the Governor. /s

I know that famous GRT vote was in the spring but wasn’t there also regular session during the fair in the summer of ‘07? Maybe my memory is getting old and faulty but I could have sworn there was.

Since the deadline for the Senate to act on SB1 is August 16, it makes complete sense for the House to convene that day. Rauner would accuse Madigan of stalling if he didn’t, right?

I like the analogy to the GRT because I think if all members, including Republicans, were honest, then it would have about the same level of support.
That said, I can’t see the “governor” allowing anyone to walk on a vote on his bill even if he knows it’s going down. His ego is much too large for that, and he has purse strings that RRB never had.

The Senate needs to act first on the AV. Meeting isn’t helpful to the atmosphere, maybe, or it allows Raunerites to complain on the House floor on other “stuff” too, so… It’s a head scratcher to the political moments just around the corner, I guess.

Living it daily, they had a hearing on the changes today, so that would be a meeting.
But it’s also a bit difficult to vote on the Governor;s specific recommendations for change when his administration has not been able to provide data as to how his changes impact school districts.

It appears Speaker Madigan could not get enough state representatives corralled under the capitol dome until August 16, 2017 which just happened to fall on Governor’s Day at the fair. Rauner is not needed for voting to over-riding his AV so…

So the AV will fail the Senate, the Senate will pass the override, then that will fail in the House.

Too bad the Dems played street-shrink for 60 days, thinking their cool-off therapy would somehow change the facts.
SB1 was ruined when Madigan added all the last minute junk, May 31.
The anger-management-therapy-ruse was just cover to create chaos and leverage to push through the Chicago special.

Durkin, of course this is an in your face move. Why should you expect otherwise given the extreme level of nastiness since Rauner took office. Yes, it was nasty before but it went to a new level.

Not that they will, but the GOP could really shake up Springfield by agreeing to a compromise ed funding bill on Governor’s Day. It sure would beat their usual and tired Speaker Madigan Bash-a-thon at the Fairgrounds.

Rauner’s veto that may not be accepted or overriden will be the reason schools can’t stay open.
Only Rauner can veto, and if it’s not accepted, Rauner alone will be hurting Illinois K-12 students.

You could cheer go no override, that won’t let “Chicago win”
You could cheer go no acceptance too, that’ll teach K-12 students.
Of course, that means Rauner will own the chaos, so there that.

Captain, I remember session during the summer of 2007 but can’t remember when. Do remember one Committee of the Whole meeting on a Sunday that was like a three-hour Rod-bashing. Believe it had to do with pensions.

@Norseman, you are spot on. During past GOP administrations there would be disagreements but there would also be civility and compromise. With Rauner it was attack and attack some more from day one. There has been no carrot and stick, only the stick. How has that worked out?
