* I was going to post something later tonight, per agreement, but the worst kept secret of the day is now out…
Dem Gov candidate JB Pritzker has chosen state Rep Juliana Stratton to be his running mate.

* I think if I had to choose a running mate for Pritzker, or any other Democratic gubernatorial candidate for that matter, it would be Rep. Stratton (D-Chicago).
1) She’s a woman, obviously. It’s an all-male field right now and lots more females vote in Democratic primaries than men.
2) She’s an African-American female. African-Americans make up a huge chunk of the Democratic primary electorate and black women are the party’s most hardcore of hardcore supporters.
3) She’s relatively new to politics. Rep. Stratton hasn’t really been around long enough to do something stupid or ethically questionable.
4) She works hard and she’s already vetted. Remember, she was the victor of an incredibly hard-fought, multi-million-dollar Democratic primary last year against Rep. Ken Dunkin. She was tireless, and if there was something there, we’d probably already know about it.
5) She was personally endorsed by President Barack Obama in the 2016 primary. How many Illinois lt. governor candidates can say that?
6) She’s smart, is an accomplished public speaker and has an engaging personality. Nuff said.
All of those advantages in the primary can also be applied to the general.
Yeah, she was backed by Speaker Madigan against Dunkin, but Pritzker is going to be tagged as the Madigan candidate no matter what, so does it really matter?
And, yeah, she’s a “Chicago Democrat.” That will help in the primary, but could have an impact in the general. Even so, Pat Quinn failed to adequately turn out the city and he lost.
Anyway, maybe I’m wrong. Correct me if you think I am. I’m all ears.
…Adding… Something else to consider for the primary is that SEIU and AFSCME were huge supporters of her race against Dunkin last year. Neither of those unions have yet made an endorsement and they aren’t exactly big fans of billionaires. So, she at least gives Pritzker a shot with them.
Does this win the primary for Pritzker? Of course not. There’s a long way to go, campers, but she’s a solid choice all around.

I mean, whichever Dem wins the primary is going to be able to say that, but yes, I take your meaning.
I, of course, wanted a downstater. But Stratton, by dint of how she got here, uniquely appeals to the unions and young activists. That’s not common.

I’d go and say…
Rep. Stratton is the type of Lt. Governor candidate that you wish that the LG ran seperate again so whomever did get the nomination, they’d get to have the very good fortune to have Rep. Stratton as their “number two”
This is a smart, sharp choice.
Rep. Stratton will work hard on the trail, she’ll be sharp on the stump, and can overcome perceived negatives by just leaning on her qualifications and short electoral positioning and symbolism of beating Ken Dunkin and the rallying around her by many to do that.
Now it’s up to Biss, Kennedy, and Pawar to follow suit and meet the bar Pritzker has put up to measure.

One challenge for them is that they’d all benefit from an African American woman (though Pawar needs one by far the least), but one of the benefits of going first is everyone else looks like they’re just responding to you.

The first to play for the trick can make winning the trick easier.
Doesn’t mean that the trick is won. There’s always (aw, geez, no pun intended) trump out there that might take the trick in the end.

Good choice. She worked with the grassroots groups to beat Ken and now its her job to work those groups and the city nonstop. She’s only a Freshman, but I can think of a couple of state Reps who’ve been Biss friendly that she may be able to sway. She can work the city hard and allow JB to work more on the burbs and downstate.

Lynn S. - her vacancy is not dependent on her winning. She can’t file to run for both offices. Her seat is going to be effectively open now.
Agree with everything you wrote Rich. Very few legislators are as smart and seasoned as her, and she’s only just gotten there. Your analysis only covers the superficial characteristics, I think she will enhance his team and be a great spokesman for him. She will probably help improve JB”s policy profile as well. Great choice.
Madigan this Madigan that all day long - but if Rauner goes after her half the coverage will be about his attempts to buy votes with Ken Dunkin - and I think the Dunkin story is a loser for Rauner and helps turn urban voters even more against him.

I’ll have to take your word for it. I got into Texas Hold ‘Em when everyone else did, but otherwise, I have the wrong mindset for card games.
This is also a shot across Kennedy’s bow, as he seems to have been counting on strong AA support (though who can tell, with him).

I’d say this on Kennedy and his choice(s), I’d think a downstater, a conservative type in the Party with ties to trade labor might be a really good fit for him.
If Kennedy can keep a good chunk of that 44% name idea as votes, he might be best served with a candidate I described above to get downstate votes, using a Blago type of matrix to find raw votes outside Cook and the Collars.

Hard to square that with his flashes as the Bernie-esque “true progressive outsider”, though.
And- Blue Dog Dem is right. Downstate, sorta conservative trade unionist? Sounds like a gun owner, yeah? That’s who a Kennedy is gonna run with?

Wasn’t sure about picking someone from Chicago, but she’s just such a stellar pick that I don’t think it will matter. And the two of them together will outwork everyone else in the race. Great choice.

Interesting that J.B. could convince her to give up the seat.
I’m trying to think of other names that might make a difference.
Mendoza would view Lt. Gov. as a step down. She seems to have her eyes on something bigger (Senate? Gov?).
Kwame might be a choice. It might be a way for him to head outside of Chicago to increase name recognition.
Summers is the one who might be intriguing, for a lot of the same reasons as Stratton.
Nobody wants to run with a Chicago Alderman on the ticket, so that rules all of them out.
Kelly Cassidy might be a good one for a candidate who wants to run a strong anti-gun/anti-violence race, but I suspect she’s got better political instincts than to give up her seat for a race that is probably going to Pritzker.
Andy Manar? No way.
Chuy Garcia? He wants another run at Mayor and beyond that, I just don’t think he handled himself well in that last race. He seemed uniformed, but he is the one who may have rally young people.

Rich said it all. Good first impressions and too new in office to have bad baggage.
More interesting are signs that JB is focusing hard on suburbs and collars, so this shores up some base elements. His political staff continues to impress — they seem Illinois saavy, unlike Rauner’s.

I’m nobody, less than nobody in the world of Illinois politics, but I think Pritzker is going to be our next governor. It’s not what I want *cough-Biss-cough* but I’d lay odds that voters will choose J.B. as the lesser of two billionaire evils.

Well played, JB. This will not only have Chicago/collar impact, but I believe play well in Peoria, Decatur, Rockford, and other areas impacted by job loss and SB 1. This will be one hard working team, and I believe shows JB’s seriousness. This should get AFSCME, SEIU, IFT, and IEA on board.

It’s interesting to me that he made this pick. It gets into the mindset that his whole ballgame is in Cook Co. and Chicago in particular. That could be the smart play, it remains to be seen. Maybe he needed more shoring up in the city than has been discussed.
All that being said, she’s a very attractive candidate for all of the reasons mentioned. It puts her in the circle for the future for herself, no matter what the results of this.

How many Lt Gov candidates over the years can
say that.
Also represents an important demographic for the
primary and general. Need to max out the City vote to then build upon in the burbs and downstate.

Don’t assume Stratton was selected because of any labor ties. Unions gave her money in her state rep. Primary for three reasons: 1) Michael J. Madigan, 2) she was not Ken Dunkin, and 3) Michael J. Madigan. There is no more reason for AFSCME, IEA, etc. to get on board with JB today than yesterday.

I would’ve recommend Jehan Gordon-Booth to try and get a downstate perspective but Juliana is really doing a great job and would be a great Lt. Gov. who would dive in wholeheartedly unlike the total joke we have in there now.

Good pick for the primary, not good for the general. Helps blunt Kennedy’s base (and if you didn’t think JB was concerned about that, you missed the radio ads he’s been playing on WCPT. This pick is more evidence).
Anybody read Neil Steinberg’s column earlier in the week? (predicting JB wins the primary and loses the general - I’m not so sure about the latter, but I share his concerns).

As Pritzker’s running mate, Stratton will bid for the lieutenant governor’s job as he tries to become the state’s chief executive. Under a change in state law before the 2014 election, governor candidates must run as a team in the primary with a chosen lieutenant governor candidate.

Smart choice, except I’m wondering if any of the other gubernatorial candidates will also choose a female Lt. Gov candidate, but with more legislative experience plus provide a glimpse of the specific stated issues they’d run point on once in office. The other way to go would be to go hard the other way and choose an outsider w/zero gov’t experience but strong grassroots credentials. After all, it’s the Democratic primary.

Since this is only the second time an LG pick has been made, who knows? The pick has the potential to be a big help, if it is the right person and they work hard for the candidate and they have a solid message.

Rep. Stratton is a really good choice. I might’ve angled for Toi Hutchinson - many of the same qualities, has been a real voice in the legislature, and can’t totally be tagged with Chicago. Then again, maybe he did, maybe she’s going to support someone else or didn’t want to go against another sitting senator. Who knows.

Even though Rep. Stratton and I disagree about many economic issues, the IL House will lose a strong voice for criminal justice reform. She’s a talented legislator.
I’m not sure this will help JB enough to overcome his close ties to Madigan, but Rep. Stratton’s poise and charm can’t hurt.

Rauner is at 63% disapproval, with Trump at his midterm, in a state Hillary won by 17 points.
I dunno, Mike Madigan isn’t running statewide.
The last time Rauner’s old Crew ran the Madigan play statewide Susana Mendoza raised her hand and was sworn in as Comptroller.

Everyone seems to be way over their skis on this pick. Assuming a Lt. Gov. running mate matters to voters (a big assumption), there are major problems with this pick. Her strident anti-gun position will be a big turn off to the lunchbox Republican union types all across the State. They will be hard pressed to vote for a ticket that wants to take their guns away, even against a guy who their bosses say is against their interests (and the rank and file from the private trades aren’t seeing how Rauner has been able to do anything to hit their bottom line). Race at the top of the ticket might motivate, but this spot doesn’t seem likely to move any new voters to the polls. Her possible appeal to Bernie voters won’t matter - she and JP are Madigan Machine through and through. Bernie nearly beat Hillary in her home state. They’re going to go with Biss. A lot of wishful thinking on this blog…

Nice to see the Democrat front runners double down so quickly on the the downstate working class is irrelevant. She she is well qualified, but for a billionaire needing to pull those working class dems back in, wrong move.
There are 2 ways Rauner wins this election.
1. Convince people his opponent is going to be another Madigan puppet(which he will be).
2. Push the Trump dems over the edge. (More money than Rauner and a Chicago running mate).
Maybe that tells us where we are, we have sufficiently established there is not a decent republican to run and he could not find one qualified democrat not from Chicago.

I expected that Pritzker or Kennedy would have chosen state Senator Jackie Collins as his running mate. Stratton is a great move on the part of Pritzker. If I were Kennedy I would reach out to Collins right now, before someone else asks her. She’s got a long history of fighting for underdogs against banks and other financial interests, and long true record of progressive positions.

This election is going to be all about taxes. The unions will turn out for the Democrat whether it’s JB, Kennedy, or someone else. The other Democrats who voted for Quinn will likely turn out as well. What remains to be seen is how voters react to higher taxes, not just the state income tax but everything. Are they grumbling or are they revolting?

Criminal Justice Reform…is the only thing most people actually give the Governor credit for here at CF. Don’t think I’d lead with that…
Video is so-so at best, but it’s an intro. It’s better than most of what they’ve put together.
Her very fit appearance makes him look even more unfit when they’re pictured together. Ouch.
The logo…is terrible.

Those who think all Democrats are anti gun might want to check on who the chief sponsor has been on most of the pro gun legislation the last few years.

Good on Representative Skillicorn for speaking of a colleague in an opposing party while acknowledging areas of agreement and disagreement in a respectful, non-demonizing way. It’s nice to see and too rare a thing.

The video is decent. Other than through CapFax though, about four people will see it.
That logo is miserable. Hopefully that is a placeholder until they get the real one.
Not as bad as the first Trump-Pence logo (do people remember the TP?) but still, pretty bad.
