  1. Rauner sounds extremely stilted.

  2. Someone is going to lose their libertarian card….

Comment by Ghost Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 3:12 pm

  3. And the former GOP GA felt “betrayed” when Rauner signed school funding…

  4. Having “no social agenda” did mean what we thought it did — code for not going hard pro-life.

  5. He sounded like a person who was doing something at knife point. Very tense, almost as if he was gritting his teeth through the entire thing.

  6. I commend him for signing the bill, but it will not be enough “penance” for the other “no social agenda” acts he’s done since in office.

  7. When will McSweeney announce his future plans? He is right on top of every political event. No disrespect. Just sayin’

  8. you don’t need a Weatherman to know which way the wind blows in Illinois. He just moved closer to winning a second term.

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 3:18 pm

  9. Rauner absolutely owns ILGOP, but I find it hard to believe he can sign this with no downside. We’ll only be the fifth state that covers abortion. That’s what *I* want, not what most Republicans want.

  10. ===He sounded like a person who was doing something at… Very tense, almost as if he was gritting his teeth through the entire thing===

It was Diana Rauner’s personal integrity at stake here.

This keeps Diana Rauner’s personal reputation intact.

Diana gave millions to the ILGOP too. It’s part hers.

  11. I really, truely believe this guy will not seek reelection.

  12. Walker - great minds think alike. I just posted something along those lines on the other post/thread regarding HB 40. Others have been vocal but McSweeney has been VERY vocal - especially over the last 3 months.

  13. Rauner may keep his money to himself from here on out. If so, the ILGOP will be seriously hurting. They’ve ridden the Rauner Bucks train too long. I can easily see the ILGOP splintering as the national organization is doing now.

  14. t would have been easy for him to veto, and I would think any other Republican would have. So I’ll give him some credit for having a backbone on this. It probably sinks him which makes it even better.

  15. Stick him with a fork - he’s done.

Comment by Little Egypt Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 3:28 pm

  16. He chose the better political strategy IMHO. Grow his vote instead of play to the base.

Comment by Molly Maguire Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 3:30 pm

  17. This is Madigan’s tune.
Madigan could have held this till next summer and made Rauner wear it for the general election. I think he decided to do this now, to encourage a primary for Rauner.

Comment by Downstate Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 3:30 pm

  18. Did he actually promise it to both sides?

Comment by JackD Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 3:36 pm

  19. Is it weird that part of my reaction is: here he is, here at last, the candidate Illinois voted to be their Governor? The one who will take the slings and arrows, the one who will make calls that are unpopular with both sides of the aisle? The one who will take clear and decisive action?

Please don’t take that to mean I’m celebrating his signing of the bill. I’m just trying to articulate my reaction and wondering if it’s strange.

Comment by Earnest Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 3:37 pm

  20. Earnest - This was not an act of bravery, it was a cynical move to the middle for the election. Rauner owns the GOP so he knows there is no downside to sign this. He is making his pitch to suburban women.

Comment by TominChicago Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 3:49 pm

  21. While I’d prefer the money spent on more comprehensive sex education and free, reliable birth control, this is better than nothing.

Which doesn’t mean he’s bought my vote either.
