* This is the most brutal reaction I’ve yet seen about the governor signing HB40…
Today Illinois Republican Governor Bruce Rauner signed House Bill 40, which provides taxpayer funding for abortions.
In response, House Republican Floor Leader, Rep. Peter Breen, issued the following statement:
“I’ve had a front row seat to watch the performance and ability of Bruce Rauner over these past three years.
I’ve seen him rapidly hire and terminate numerous staff members, highly competent professionals who were proven successful in their prior roles. Inexplicably, they appeared incompetent while working for Rauner.
I personally observed him badly botch negotiations with the General Assembly on a variety of subjects, finally getting to the point where Governor Rauner couldn’t even be in the same room as House Speaker Mike Madigan. Madigan is the one guy who Rauner promised to stand up to, but he can’t or won’t even enter the arena for that fight.
I’ve heard Rauner promise the people of Illinois that he had “no social agenda” and as such firmly commit to legislators, the public, and even to Chicago’s Cardinal, Blaise Cupich, that he would veto taxpayer funding of abortions. But he has now broken that commitment, signing a bill that puts taxpayers on the hook to pay for an expected 20,000-30,000 aborted lives per year. And without any source of funding, in the throes of an unbalanced budget. Now, I’ve come to expect politicians to shade the truth, but what’s clear today is that Rauner’s promises were just flat out lies.
As the lead advocate for the Republicans on the floor of the Illinois House, I have given Bruce Rauner every benefit of the doubt. I supported his vetoes on a number of bills that would have made it more difficult to do business in Illinois. Any elected Republican in this state would have vetoed those same bills. Hardly exceptional.
The only unique feature left in Rauner’s favor is that he writes big campaign checks. For Republicans whose elections require those contributions, I understand their reluctance to be critical of Rauner. They may even still give him the benefit of the doubt, as I did until today.
In the face of overwhelming evidence of Rauner’s inability to competently administer the Illinois government, inability to stand up to Mike Madigan effectively, and inability to keep his word and his commitments, I can no longer support him. And whether or not they are able to agree publicly, I know hundreds of elected Republicans, along with hundreds of thousands of Republican voters, who feel the same way I do.”

I posted this on the other thread, but totally applicable here as well…
Rauner may keep his money to himself from here on out. If so, the ILGOP will be seriously hurting. They’ve ridden the Rauner Bucks train too long. I can easily see the ILGOP splintering as the national organization is doing now. Question will be, will Rauner feel he even needs to fund Raunerites from here on out? He may morph totally into that man of the contemplative shadows we saw at the Old State Capitol presser earlier this year.

a major victory for the Speaker. There will still be plenty of money given to the loyalists, however it is clear that a small coalition will no longer be reliable votes for the gov. with so many outgoing reps. there will be plenty of new blood, some need his money to win, others can self fund or are in safe R districts. Running as an Anti Rauner Republican in districts like Cavelleto’s district just got a heck of a lot easier to win.

Well, not to Breen anymore, that’s for sure.
But seriously, that’s all Rauner ever had. That and a zealot’s hatred of public unions. It was always enough for Breen until Rauner shockingly kept a promise he made. Nobody should be surprised that Rauner signed this bill, but nobody should be surprised how badly he handled the entire situation.
He’s always been just a giant checkbook wrapped inside a Carhartt jacket out to bust the unions.

McSweeny also called him a failed governor. Going to be hard for Rauner to survive when Dems can run ads with his own party members ripping him to shreds. The budget impasse slowly closed the door on his reelection, I think it just slammed shut today.

McSweeney and Breen have no credibility with voters outside their districts, which is the vast majority of voters.

I’ll get to Rep. Breen, but let’s frame some of this…
What happened here is Bruce Rauner understanding two very important things.
The first is he’s in charge and being in charge with no social agenda, no ideology outside busting unions or destroying social services or closing universities… outside Raunerism… Rauner is in charge and can do… whatever he thinks will be good for him, his brand or even saving Diana’s brand and reputation. The flip side of all that is Rauner owns a political party, it’s apparatus, sits as its (usually) political compass where that party should be and do that within a 80% Reagan Rule.
Rauner can care less about the alleged party platform stances, and signed because the politics of having his wife still be a credible crutch for his purposeful destruction meant owning a party, and doing what the RaunerS want, not what a party could rally around.
The second thing Rauner understands is the ILGOP needs him. They need him. In reality, Rauner kinda-sorta needs them, the bright-eyed believers that Bruce and Diana are doing all this for a better Illinois, but who is going gonna bankroll a whole party like Rauner? Look how long it took for “a Rauner” to emerge. It’s not like “a Rauner” is a leaf on a tree, abundant and littering the lawn. No. There will be beefers, but the ILGOP, Durkin, Brady, they need Rauner. Now the flipside of this is the complaining that will follow this… that’s will stop when the nine-digit media buys need that piggy bank.
Rauner, like with K-12 funding and signing that… meh. The opportunity for the GOP GA having any independence has long since passed.
Think. A whole GA was sat and went Sine Die. All that destruction, no signed budgets, the collapse of social service providers… the ILGOP still needed The Rauners. There was that need of them, as vote after vote was cast to hurt districts, agencies, people… The ILGOP needs The Rauners.
Understanding those two things, a signature means Rauner is on his way, and those members will follow, and they know it. They know that.
I’m a Republican and it pains me to write, believe, know, and come to terms with this. Today and this signature is Rauner reinforcing and strengthening his grip, cause he can, and in these 2 1/2 years, no one thought to stop him.
Rep. Breen, while a thoughtful and crushing letter… Here is why I feel EXACTLY as I feel…

The caucus jettisoned Andersson, not the Governor. What they’ll happen to Breen is that they’ll line up behind him. Watch.

Rasmussen. The Governor’s ability to pass any of his agenda for the remainder of his term just got more difficult (if that’s even possible). His term as far his his relevance is over IMO.

I know that no one deserve an “atta-boy” for doing the right thing, but the glee in these comments over Rauner’s decision to do something that the bulk of commenters agree with is and that will harm him politically is a nice reminder that, to everyone here, politics is sports and policy is irrelevant.

I was there when the Breens of the GA continued to enable Rauner and cement that Raunerism eclipsed being a Republican.

These members went in mass and met and got a commitment. Face to face. It was broken. Now, the Governor broke his base.
Members carry water for their leaders and Governors. It ain’t always easy. It was more than the money, but the money is all that’s left. And this Rep and a couple others have just walked away from the money. There will be more. Maybe a lot more. It’s not follow the money from today forward. It’s run away from it. Watch.

And btw Willy, get some better sources on the Andersson thing. He was poached by his peers, not the Governor. If Rauner wanted to save him, he’d have lost on that. Of course, why would he anyway?

Let’s be clear: is Rauner really going to primary EVERYONE who has come out against him after the HB 40 presser?
Righter, Rezin, Morrison, McSweeney, Ives, Breen, McConchie and Skillicorn all won without Rauner’s help. Don’t believe me? Look it up. Righter won his Senate seat in 2002. Rezin was appointed in 2010 after she won a House seat. Morrison won his seat in 2010. McSweeney and Ives were both elected in 2012 - and McSweeney used his own $$$ to win. Breen was elected in 2014 - when Rauner really didn’t help anyone but himself. McConchie won a three-way primary and is a pro-life advocate - so what do you expect him to say? - and the Senate GOP never really got as much help from Rauner as the HRO received (save for Fowler’s race). Skillicorn - who’s an interesting fellow - was more of a Proft guy than anything, and neither McConchie nor Skillicorn had tough races.
Given what transpired over the summer and now is Rauner really, really going to fund primaries against 10+ people - while having to fund his and Erika Harold’s campaigns? I doubt it.

When the monies to run caucus campaigns diverts from the RaunerS in protest and support of Rep. Breen’s words…
The RaunerS are betting on the last 2 1/2 years continuing, and the enabling to continue once more, after the appropriate time passes. It’ll probably be a lil longer than the K-12 signature, and it’s understandable.

Since the team working on JB Pritzker’s team has looked competent, a prediction. Ads quoting Rep. Breen at length will run before March on Fox News and WIND, WLS, WMDB, WKAN, and other talk radio stations. That, and some Facebook targeting ought to help Bruce Rauner further depress enthusiasm for keeping him in public service.

I’m an independent, usually lean Democratic in federal races and Republican in local and state. I supported Bruce Rauner in 2014 and have been questioning it for a while, especially with outsourcing his administration to the IPI and just the general dysfunction of his time in office so far. This very well may cost Rauner his office, but I’m all in for another term. This took courage and at the end of the day, he made the right call.

While the “whoa” factor on this is pretty high, most elected officials without this man’s spine will keep their mouths shut and their hands open. But we’ll see. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out over the next year. Those big bucks will silence a lot of this type of attack.
