Legendary Madigan worker Ed Moody bows out of county board campaign

Posted in:

* He took a lot of heat for voting for the pop tax, but this is still pretty surprising

Cook County Commissioner Ed Moody, D-Chicago Ridge, said Tuesday he will not run for election next year.

Moody — a longtime top precinct captain for Illinois House Speaker and Democratic Party Chairman Michael Madigan — was appointed to fill a vacancy on the county board a year ago and had said he would seek election to a full term.

But Moody told the Chicago Sun-Times he decided not to run after all because of a serious illness to a member of his family. […]

For decades, Moody and his twin brother Fred have been among the most effective campaign operatives in Madigan’s organization, doing door-to-door election work for candidates endorsed by the speaker in state legislative and municipal races across Illinois.

The stories I’ve heard about those two guys. They could talk a Jeanne Ives supporter into putting up a yard sign for Carol Ammons. OK, maybe they’re not that good, but almost.

Best wishes to his family.

…Adding… Former state Rep. David Miller’s wife Donna announced a few months ago that she’s running for that county board seat. She’s backed by US Rep. Robin Kelly and Sen. Toi Hutchinson.

  2. He may just prefer the trail to the boardroom. Wouldn’t be a shock. The compensation may even be commensurate. Or better in the precincts. :)

  3. I’ve seen Fred go to a house with the opponent’s lawn sign, and persuade the owner to let Fred take it down and replace it with the sign for his candidate.

  6. My best wishes to the Ed Moody and his family.

A treat to watch those who can work a precinct really turn around a precinct, or many precincts and tilt a tight campaign their way.

It’s an art and a science. The brothers are legendary.

  8. Another example of Fred’s skills is determining the voter goes to a particular church, and holding hands with the voter and the candidate while praying on the front steps.

  12. Donna Miller being backed by Robin Kelly is taking a quick twist. Lou Presta the Mayor of Crestwood has already gotten the endorsement locked up from the Dem Commiteeman for Moody’s seat. What’s surprising is Presta has been in the press a lot lately and his son is on Robin Kelly’s staff.
I guess Robin is hedging her bet.

  14. -Anonymous- not buying the Presta story no offense. Just looked him and Crestwood up and it’s a miniature Cicero. From being sued over car allowance to getting a 600% pay increase after his last election. Donna Miller will have a field day with this guy

  15. No doubt he is a nice man and may be legendary - but to some this type of patronage is a problem. The guy gets paid to work on MJM’s campaigns for years and then he is appointed to the County Board. He may loyal but does this serve the greater good ?

    Can confirm

  23. Donna Miller is a non-starter. Presta became Mayor of Crestwood at a time when everyone thought it would be bankrupt. In less than 3 years he turned their finances around to the point that its financial rating is one of the highest in the state. He even rebates the Village citizens their property tax. The guy is a financial genius who knows how to deal with business people to bring them into the county. He will be the next 6th district commissioner.
