* Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) just filed paperwork to create a new campaign committee called “Ives for Illinois.” She has about $268K in the bank. Her campaign committee chairman is Chicago Republican Party Chairman Chris Cleveland.
* Meanwhile, Mark Maxwell tried to ask Ives last night about this comment…
Gays who seek to marry are “trying to weasel their way into acceptability so that they can then start to push their agenda down into the schools, because this gives them some sort of legitimacy,” she said, adding that a child being raised by a gay couple is “an object of desire.”

Rep. Ives: If you want to talk about the Illinois economy, I am happy to talk about the Illinois economy.
Reporter: I just did. We just talked about the Illinois economy.
Rep. Ives: Okay, great. What’s next?
Reporter: It’s important. You’re running for governor.
Rep. Ives: What about public corruption? Let’s talk about public corruption. Because it is an everyday event in the state of Illinois.
Reporter: Why did you just change the subject? This is a very important subject to thousands of people in Illinois.
Rep. Ives: What’s important?
Reporter: He said AIDS was God’s rightful judgment on the gay community.
Rep. Ives: I’m not going to comment on somebody else’s comment. It’s ridiculous.
Reporter: Okay, then what about your comments on this topic.
Rep. Ives: Why would we… You want to.. you’re like Bruce Rauner. The guy who didn’t have a social ended up only having a social agenda.
Reporter: Excuse me?
Rep. Ives: Well it seems like you’re entire topic is to talk about a social agenda.
Reporter: We just spent ten minutes talking about the economy.
Rep. Ives: And that’s what’s important to families in the state of Illinois.
Reporter: Are you refusing to answer a question to clarify your own comments in the past about the legitimacy of gay marriage?
Rep. Ives: No, I thought you were going to ask about somebody else’s comment.
Reporter: I was going to ask you about David Barton. But if you become governor, there is a large part of the population that cares deeply about this. They will want to know where you stand. Would you protect the rights given to the LGBT community?
Rep. Ives: Okay, so what specific rights do they have that are different than any other American? We all are governed by the same constitution. We all have the same rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,
Reporter: Does that include marriage?
Rep. Ives (continues): …free speech, second amendment, fourth amendment protections…
Reporter: To marriage?
Rep. Ives: There is nothing that I know of that are called rights that are not specific to any individual. The federal government has weighed in on marriage equality. That is federal law. I am a rule follower. So federal law, like I said when it comes to legal immigration, we are going to follow federal law in the state, regardless of what the law is. That’s my position.
* Also, I mentioned to subscribers yesterday that she may be endorsed by the Winfield Township Republicans tonight. That was an error. The group has already endorsed Gov. Rauner.

It’s great to have reporters like Maxwell, Vinicky and Sfondeles asking the tough questions and sticking to it. We need more journalists like them. We need to destroy the “whataboutism” politicians use to deflect from answering questions.

If you’re running for office, answer the question. You don’t get to decide what’s “important to families in Illinois”. The people do.

She just disqualified herself. Yes, some federal law supersedes state law, but that is not always the case. For instance, the Illinois Constitution in several aspects gives greater protections than the U.S. Constitution. She needs to learn that.

When Ives shared her views in the prior radio interview she obviously thought they were relevant and important enough to be heard. I can’t see why she’s running away from the topic now particularly since her campaign was fueled by Rauner’s inconsistent “social agenda”.
Comments like Ives’ speak to character. And character is always relevant.

While I don’t support Ives, why should she buy into the notion that the reporter asks questions most people care about. Ives is clumsy, but right that the issues in the primary are Rauner’s effectiveness as governor, his truthfulness and his political philosophy.

As this race moves forward, I expect to see many Ives quotes brought up in interviews and ads. Anyone who has spent 30 minutes in the gallery of the House during debate has heard Ives say something that many (probably most) people would find offensive and uninformed. It’s been part of her brand.
The benefit to Rauner is that running against Ives should make him look like a moderate. (I don’t put it past him to mess this up by trying to run to her right…)

I guess Ives isn’t a state’s rights kinda Republican?
All Ives is doing is helping Bruce Rauner seem sensible, reasonsble, level-headed, and moderate.
This is a collossal failure and if Rauner beats back the blue wave, the anti-Trump, his own failings, and Dems, Labor, and social service advocates and clients…
… it will be Jeanne Ives that helped with that victory.

Ives is ridiculous and comical, but as much fun as Ives is, Ives is dangerous, as she helps Rauner rehabilitate himself in ways he couldn’t, and gives Rauner that “map of discontent” where in GOP voters are dissatisfied.
The joke will be on Republicans as Raunerism gets its chance to rise… Thanks the Ives

I think people underestimate Ives ability to win the primary. In Virginia, some guy who campaigned on keeping Confederate battle monuments came within 1% of getting the GOP gov nomination. And as many people have pointed out, almost 70% voted either Cruz or Trump in the 2016.
If Ives does get 40% or more, an interesting thought experiment would be: Could Harold, just as conservative but way more polished, have knocked off Rauner?

Ives ducking questions on her own previous public positions is an attempt to weasel her way into respectability and become an object of desire to GOP primary voters.
She made a living as a quote machine. Ives obviously dug the notoriety she got for it in some circles. No whining when you’re asked about them.
On a related note, is she going to continue to pretend that Trump doesn’t exist, too? That is so strange. Her only chance chance is to contrast herself with Rauner and motivate the million voters who went for Trump or Cruz in the 2016 primary.
Her reticence suggest that she’s muting her previous bombast with an eye toward the general election.
I’ve got news for you, representative. A GOP primary victory is the only possible prize out there for you; a general election victory for you is not in the cards in this state. Go all out for what you can win, and take down Rauner.

There’s a reason why Rauner made the calculated decision to support HB40. This aint Virginia. It’s also the reason why Ives doesn’t want to defend her prior words and actions. Ives will make Rauner look reasonable where it matters the most.

That’s a good answer from a social conservative that probably does not condone all kinds of weirdness promoted by progressives.
A leader doesn’t have to approve of every flavor of candy, they just have to respect the legal standing of other’s rights to their favorite flavor.

I wish social conservatives would just own their beliefs already. If you said something and still believe it to be true then stand by it. If you said something and have since changed your mind, then say so. People will respect you more than doing these silly verbal gymnastics with reporters.

I’m a college football fan.
When the “big” schools prepare, the powerhouses, they schedule smaller, less talented (by recruits or by reputation) called “cupcakes”
You schedule “cupcakes” to work on where you know you have weaknesses, and use the weaknesses of the “cupcakes” to hone a running game, passing game, blocking, tacking, abc many times those “cupcakes” expose where weaknesses are in these powerhouse teams.
It’s a huge advantage to play a “cupcake” before the real season begins.
Rauner?
Rauner is polling in a way where the GOP is “supportive”, but where is that GOP weaker?
How damaging is a fractured GOP that Rauner needs to win?
Rauner now gets a practice game for all that new infrastructure, and Rauner can grade where his own campaign infrastructure is strong and weak.
Rauner also gets to measure, with pinpoint precinct accuracy, exactly where the GOP voters are dismissing him, and how moderate he can be in Novermber to keep a GOP base.
Rauber can now pivot off the extreme Ives, and the Dems too, with a real “race” that Rauner can spend $30 million to redifne himself, and still have $30 million in the bank.
Ives is a college football “cupcake team”, allowing the weighing and measuring for Rauner and a practice game for a new field operation and weigh and measure that… and correct it… along with trying and testing messaging.
Ives helps.
Then again, Appalachian State didn’t help Michigan… but Ives isn’t disciplined enough to pull that upset.

The paperwork says her committee was formed on the 10th with $267,725.90 in it. The filing seems to have been mailed and time stamped at the state board of elections today (11/25/17). So where are the A-1’s? Maybe I am not up to date on this but she has raised enough to require electronic filing and donations over $500 or $1000 have to be disclosed within 48 hours. I see no A-1’s?

Ives should be asked the same marriage question at every event. Put her on the spot to answer the question. Just like Rauner should be put on the spot regarding the damage he has done to the state with his quote about creating crisis.

OW - Interesting analogy.
If Rauner was a big time college team, wouldn’t he be the Fightin’ Illini? He brought in a superstar to run things, beat a couple of cupcakes early in the season (2014 primary, Quinn) and then gets smoked by every other Big Ten team (including Rutgers). Think of Ives as Rutgers. Or South Florida.

Let’s Michigan, Penn State, Michigan State (Brady, Dillard, Rutherford) struggle in their own “division”, but wins enough to get to the B1G Championship versus Ohio State (Quinn) and a battered and beleaguered Buckeye team couldn’t get it done against Wisconsin.
Ives is UW - Platteville
Nice squad, “local”, but Camp Randall is a big stage to be exposed by Wisconsin.
It also allows Wisconsin to measure up… before that B1G season

One’s attendance at West Point may or may not be evidence of virtue, but it surely is evidence of a sense of duty.
Virtue, to my understanding is a habit of rationality, which overtime produces the Golden Mean, staying away from the vices of excess and deficiency.
Ives answer, in that sense, was virtuous because it was rational and not extreme.
The “gotchya” moment regarding the LGBTQ “agendas” and motivations for adopting children is unfortunate because she has obviously evolved her opinion, and resigned herself to the subject as a matter of law, which is a virtuous position to have.
(Roy Moore? yaIdonno on that one…)

She wants to be Governor. It’s a legitimate question given her past statements. There is nothing “gotcha” about it. She’s been rabidly anti-gay so it’s important to know if she would take that stance as Governor.

Can a person be morally against football, especially with regard to weaker “cupcake teams,” because the evidence of CTE is proven to be rampant and deadly, and still allow IHSA, NCAA, NFL to operate within Illinois?

If, indeed, a politician is “allowed” to have a personal opinion and, at the same time, enforce the rule of law, I can’t understand why Bruce Rauner (or anyone) would object to being asked their opinions on any topic. Besides, a person running for or in political office is supposed to be a “leader” and should be able to express their thoughts on various matters of concern to the public.

Governor Oswego presents a solid case for the goals of this Ives candidacy. The State Board of Elections allows petitions for two offices at the same time, but requires the office seeker to narrow their decision within 5 days after the final filing date. So what’s happened to the
petitions for the 42nd? Were they widely circulated and complete for a filing? Has anyone else entered the race?
