Previous Post: Ives files D-1 to run for governor
Next Post: Pritzker, like Kennedy to release tax returns when he files petitions

A little context, please

Posted in:

* The governor was in Rockford yesterday

Wearing a plaid shirt and sweater-like vest, Rauner said his re-election platform includes reducing the individual income tax rate back to 3 percent during a four-year period. Earlier this year, the Legislature increased the rate from 3.75 percent to 4.95 percent.

* For the life of me, I do not know why reporters in this state don’t remember this exact same proposal with the exact same vagueness from the 2014 campaign

Speaking at Quality Float Works in Schaumburg, Rauner released a plan calling for eliminating over four years the 2011 state tax increase passed by Democrats shortly after Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn’s election. The 67 percent increase in the personal rate is scheduled to roll back in 2015.

It marked the first time that Rauner offered specifics in calling for a rollback of the income-tax increase while also promising to improve funding for education.

The scheduled 2015 rollback could cost the state $4 billion in annual revenue, according to projections. Rauner’s plan did not offer a schedule of how to reduce the rate over the next four years from 5 percent to 3 percent in the personal rate and 7 percent to 4.8 percent for the corporate rate.

Use the Google for crying out loud.

* Also, speaking of that “sweater-like vest”…

  1. I know that this isn’t the point but that vest is actually pretty cool. I don’t have $200 to spend on a vest but if I did, I would buy that one.

  2. Once again, he’s going for enough of some of the people all of the time.

No excuse for reporters to buy the unadulterated snake oil of
Rauner’s absurd claims. Make an effort, you’re supposed to offer informed reporting, not just serve as transcribers.

  6. What’s he planning to cut this time, more Waste, Fraud and Abuse?

    Things like:

    Non-appropriated computer and software upgrades?

Losing Raunerite candidates / Governor’s Office ghost employees?

    Questionable building leases?

Tailored RFP’s / Bait and switch procurement?

    Various other pinstripe patronage?

Or is he just planning to decimate the surviving social service agencies?

  7. He must really like Filson. Last week at the Guard deployment, his “preacher-style” look appeared to be the $150 Mackinaw version-

  8. ==reducing the individual income tax rate back to 3 percent during a four-year period.==

I’d be happy if a reporter simply said, “Slow down, Bruce. How about proposing a balanced budget first.”

  12. That $200 western vest is made in the USA. What exactly is the union, ahem ILWT, suggesting?
That Filson offer their American-made products at rock bottom prices in a race to the bottom?

Comment by City Zen Wednesday, Nov 15, 17 @ 9:59 am

  13. Even without the “Superstars”, Rauner wins with lazy reporters who find the need to just transcribe what Rauner says, but just can’t muster enough gumption to actually hear what Rauner says, and then actually call Rauner on his quotes.

How do I know this is a problem?

We “celebrate” when reporters actually call our Rauner.

    Think on that. Wow.

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Nov 15, 17 @ 10:00 am

  14. In fairness, the vendor offers 10% off, plus free shipping. (And you can probably avoid the sales tax as well, if you have it shipped to one of your out-of-state homes.)

Comment by Uptown Progressive Wednesday, Nov 15, 17 @ 10:01 am

  15. Wouldn’t the same argument of the press failures to cover Springfield politics and state issues also apply to a certain Speaker of the House and party chairman? In his long historic tenure, amassing of power and fiscal and pension issues which remain unresolved including a certain inspector general vacancy and a controversial current auditor general?

I mean come on! Complaints about “poor media coverage” are owned by us GOP conservatives, and I resent recent efforts by Democrats to steal this issues from us.

Allow me a loud harrumph here! :-)

  16. Rauner has gotta be the most absurdly dressed governor in the past 50 years.

  17. In my humble opinion vests are only cool if you were one with a three piece suit OR you are wearing a legit puffy vest because you work outside and with your hands.

On another note IWT is just as petty as Dan Proft and his group.

I know you aren’t calling Rauner a conservative.

  22. Maybe someone could ask GovJunk if he plans to spend any of the money from the current tax hike?
If he thinks the tax can be rolled back without ballooning unpaid bills, cutting services, etc. maybe he can givn us vision.

Comment by Annonin' Wednesday, Nov 15, 17 @ 10:35 am

  23. ===We conservative Republicans “own” that issue, not Democrats===

For this to be remotely ironic, you’d have to agree that Rauner, not remotely a conservative, you’d need to join the chorus that Rauner is wrongly getting a pass.

    You’re not.

  24. ==Learn about… “what about” -ism. It’s an old thing, but now in great fashion==

Right. There is no political discourse because the vast resources of the Internet make it easier than ever to point out what someone else did at some point. You can handwave away Roy Moore’s indiscretions by muttering something about Bill Clinton, which is a sad state of affairs. It’s our state of affairs, though.

Speaking of whataboutism, does the same critique apply to people who attack the ILGOP for demanding Pritzker’s tax returns because they didn’t speak out when Trump didn’t release his tax returns? Or are some whataboutisms more equal than others?

Comment by Chris Widger Wednesday, Nov 15, 17 @ 10:41 am

  27. CZ, agreed. Filson is a high quality, American made brand. They’ve been around for over 100 years.

While the price point might seem high, as an owner of Filson products the cost is associated with durability and utility. Can’t fault the governor for supporting a tried and true product.

Comment by njt Wednesday, Nov 15, 17 @ 10:50 am

  28. Regarding that vest…. maybe Diana found it at a Goodwill and told Bruce to wear it when he goes on tour of the “regular working people places”

Comment by Honeybadger Wednesday, Nov 15, 17 @ 10:51 am

  29. Perhaps thankfully for Democrats, the income tax hike was passed this year. Maybe a little of the sting will wear off by next year—or maybe not.

Democrats should run on the harm done by not having enough revenue and attack Rauner for trying to make Illinois even worse than the massive damage caused by not having revenue. That’s what would happen when the state income tax is cut to 3%, even lower than the 3.75% that caused so much harm.

Comment by Grandson of Man Wednesday, Nov 15, 17 @ 10:51 am

  30. Louis, you and Rauner arent conservatives. Real conservatives respect contracts, pay their bills and maintain their assets.

You guys go years without even paying the utility bills. You’re chronic deadbeats.

Comment by wordslinger Wednesday, Nov 15, 17 @ 10:53 am

  31. ===* For the life of me, I do not know why reporters in this state don’t===

===complaining about poor or sloppy press coverage==

Both of these statements assume that the governors friendly press coverage is not done on purpose. The owners and publishers (and by extension the managing editors) of almost every media outlet in Illinois are supporters of Bruce Rauner. Doesn’t anyone remember what happened to Dave McKinney, the last reporter to press Bruce too hard? Outside of the Illinois Times and the S-T (at least until Ferro buys it again just in time for election endorsements), these outlets are, in effect, bought and paid for. Is it any wonder why softball questions and zero follow-up is the norm? I’m sure a lot of reporters would like to do a better job of pointing out the many fallacies told by our pathological liar of a governor, but I very much doubt they would be allowed to.

    Comment by Lester Holt’s Mustache Wednesday, Nov 15, 17 @ 10:54 am

  32. I wish someone would ask him what a budget with a reduced tax rate to 3% would look like. Or maybe he’ll just go back to not paying any bills. No serious person should believe anyone who claims the tax rate can be reduced anytime soon.

  33. The nice thing about all those vest pockets is they catch the dropped “g”s. Form AND function.

Comment by Dome Gnome Wednesday, Nov 15, 17 @ 11:16 am

  34. No matter how he dressed he’s not just another “common man.” He’s an uber rich guy trying to fool everyone with his dress that he’s one of them. I find it insulting. I don’t care if he has a lot of money. Good for him. Just stop with the dress up game.

I actually commented on that very same thing, but the point was Trump was “Trump” back then, and what Trump gets away with isn’t the norm for others… as others are finding out too.

It’s relavant and true, but Trump was unique then, might not get the same pass now?

    Dunno.

Dunno, but Trump did… back then.

Excellent idea! On the personnel recruiting site they can lead with, “wouldn’t you love to work in a place where every day is just like Halloween.”

Of course in Raunerdom the insiders get the double meaning that treats for us means tricks for the state social service providers.
