The chief financier of a leading pro-Roy Moore super PAC is a deep-pocketed Republican businessman who dropped eight figures on 2016 races alone and is looking to continue propping up the party’s most conservative candidates.
Illinois businessman Richard Uihlein provided $100,000 to the group, Proven Conservatives PAC, since September, according to a new filing with the Federal Election Commission, making him by far the group’s top donor. That money, which hadn’t been previously disclosed, has financed a host of ads boosting Moore’s candidacy in the face of widespread sexual assault and harassment allegations. The group has also run ads attacking Moore’s primary opponent, Sen. Luther Strange (R-AL), and his Democratic general election rival Doug Jones. […]
Uihlein is a far bigger name in GOP politics. The shipping and office supply mogul and his wife donated a combined $26.4 million to federal campaigns, party organs, super PACs, and interest groups during the 2016 election cycle, according to FEC data.
That spending has kept up this year. Uihlein is single-handedly bankrolling a pair of super PACs supporting the Wisconsin Senate campaign of businessman and Marine veteran Kevin Nicholson. That spending has led Democrats in the state to accuse Uihlein of trying to buy the Senate seat for his preferred candidate.

I’m holding my fire because I suspect the donation(s) came BEFORE the widely publicized allegations that were apparently common knowledge among the good people of Gasden, AL. No reason to believe Uihlein knew about Moore’s desire for “purity.”

Maybe he donated before the sexual charges. But he certainly knew Moore was a Christian supremacist who was kicked off the bench twice for ignoring the Constitution. Not a good look.

People keep talking about the timing, as if it matters.
Even without the problems with 14 year olds, Moore held some terrible positions. His views on Muslims, gays, and other issues would make him unacceptable to most people.
Remember, this guy was kicked off the bench twice.
There is no way to spin this based on timing.

I’m sure Uihlein is just taking the very reasonable position that any Republican, even an alleged pedophile, is better than any Democrat.
Totally reasonable, and with that way of thinking, you don’t have to worry about detritus like morals or character.

Gooner: Everyone is entitled to due process, not just office holders. In the past, House investigations were a method to “hide and gloss over” misconduct on both sides of the aisle. This has to cease.

With Conyers and Franken there is admission, evidence, NDAs, and money to victim(s).
With Moore not only is there no admission, there is no evidence and he is making a claim of innocence.
He has not been convicted or held liable in a court.
These are just facts.

I choose to suspend belief. It seems the most prudent thing to do.

Cdog, you don’t think there would be a conviction?
Given that the SOL has run, there cannot be.
However, people are routinely convicted on far less evidence. The testimony of one person is often determinative. In this case, you have about seven people making similar claims, and at least for the 14 year old, you have very strong evidence that he was in the location on the day in question.

You’re aware that testimonial evidence is evidence…that comes in the form of testimony?
“The testimony of a single, credible eye witness is enough to support a criminal conviction.”
How many woman have alleged sexual misconduct by Moore? 9? That is testimonial evidence, and it is evidence.
So, please, give the “no evidence” spin a rest. It only shows your ignorance.

If any independent voters are reading this blog today, I would ask all of you to take a good long look at what Illinois republicans are willing to approve of in order to get a win. Think on this the next time you see a Rauner commercial telling you what a terrible person Mike Madigan or JB Pritzker or Chris Kennedy or Daniel Biss is.

The Moore situation is difficult for me. I dislike rhe mans policies. I dislike the actions he is alleged to have done .
I also dislike political ambushes using old charges that should have been brought forth years ago. The reports would be credible if timely. But they are too musty to pass muster.
I would vote for the Democrat, but not happily.

1) the whole “why didn’t these allegations come out before?” attitude completely ignores, intentionally or ignorantly, the explanation in the original story. This was something that apparently was floating under the surface in AL that was ferreted out by the national press, which doesn’t surprise me.
2) Captain Obvious, how many donations were made after allegations were made against Franken and Conyers vs. $50K from Uihlein after the Moore story broke.

Point is donors have supported sexual harassers (and worse) for decades, many like Kennedy and Clinton long after there perversions were will known. I expect every big donation to these folks will be given just as much attention. Not.

Everyone else that you want to compare to Roy Moore is a completely different discussion.
You are trying to defend the indefensible by muddying the waters with “what about”.
There is a place for people like Roy Moore, and it’s not the US Senate.
