This and that from candidate filing day

Posted in:

* The House Democrats get a big kick out of being first in line every two years. It’s seen as a rite of passage for young staffers to wait for days outside the State Board of Elections office. It’s also meant as a message to everyone else about how tough their organization is. But this is a bit much…

Thanksgiving Day? C’mon, man. People have families.

* A photo op turned on its head…

* The governor’s lone campaign tweet today…

Filed petitions today to run for a second term. Thank you to the thousands of Illinoisans who want to stop the Madigan tax hike agenda. #twill #ilgov pic.twitter.com/jwbXFIN4Og

Notice he’s not in the photo.

* A strong symbolic gesture…

Today we took a big step in our campaign for governor and filed our petitions to be on the ballot in the March 2018 Democratic Primary. We collected more than 10,000 signatures from all 102 counties, & we are grateful to the dedicated volunteers who helped get us to this moment. pic.twitter.com/b7XJchoRnP

— Chris Kennedy (@KennedyforIL) November 27, 2017

* I had dinner with Sen. Biss and a couple of his staffers last night and we talked about how nerve-wracking it must be to shepherd that big stack of petitions to Springfield. A car accident, a theft, a fire in the hotel (I suggested they might want to check the locations of the room’s fire sprinklers) could absolutely ruin weeks of work with just one week for a do-over. Hoo, man, they hated me for saying that stuff. I didn’t mean to jinx them, and I’m glad they made it to the Board today…

  1. Control of the chamber much more important than a turkey leg and some stuffing..

  2. Was the number of petitions he turned in a prime number? I will be glad when that guy drops out.

  3. House democrats going to the greatest lengths to show how lame and needy they are for attention.

    Comment by Iggy Monday, Nov 27, 17 @ 3:30 pm

  4. Rich, My understanding is that DPI had Top/Senior staff out there on Thanksgiving. Not some young grunt staffers.

    Comment by Some Guy Monday, Nov 27, 17 @ 3:32 pm

  5. Hopefully they took turns by working short shifts on Thanksgiving. Speaking of dirty jobs, thanks to Kennedy’s tweet, some poor schlub on the other campaigns has to go through 10,000+ signatures trying to find out if Kennedy really has them from all 102 counties.

  6. #PetitionBISSion? What?

  7. Couple things that always get my attention on the first filing day…

    The importance of showcasing strength of organization. To show up, proudly, and be a candidate with a crew that did the heavy work to help get you on the ballot, that’s really cool stuff. Much respect.

    Also, I glance thru the releases for that small but very significant tidbit “all 102 counties” for the statewides. For me, it’s one thing to have an effective and efficient Crew, it’s another to fully grasp and understand that “all 102 counties” is the inclusive language of a campaign saying “we want all to know we know you are out there”. Big props, I look every time for it.

    The cast of characters, be they young staff and crew, to the “Jackonettys” that find their way to help file, knowing only but half of their own work might be done, and the combing and challenging begins soon enough.

    Putting your name on a ballot and stand for election at anything, governor or library board, that’s a big deal. You are allowing your fellow citizens to make a decision and you are allowing yourself to be judged, measured, and decided on. Congrats to all who filed.

  8. So there is no legit advantage to being first?

    Comment by Seats Monday, Nov 27, 17 @ 3:33 pm

  9. Shouldn’t the petitions be in Amazon boxes?

  10. =So there is no legit advantage to being first?=

    Someday when Rich recognizes that us millennials are way cool and know how to internet better than the older generations he will allow me to post a meme of Ricky Bobby saying, “If you ain’t first, your last”.

    as this is a meme free zone, the quote will have to be my only allusion at this point in time.

    Comment by Iggy Monday, Nov 27, 17 @ 3:39 pm

  11. So with nearly unlimited financial resources and all those labor endorsements Pritzker couldn’t get all 102 Counties? Shows he doesn’t care about or understand the state as a whole….Chris Kennedy’s team made sure to truly run a statewide campaign and go to all of our counties, shows organization and Rich you are right an important symbol of his abilities and appeal in Counties large and small

  15. Hey now, I just thought they were against the rules.

    but thanks for showing your fun side :)

    Comment by Iggy Monday, Nov 27, 17 @ 3:45 pm

  16. ===Shows he doesn’t care about or understand the state as a whole===

    (Sigh)

    Perspective?

    I look to see how a campaign understands the symbolic importance.

    It takes zero away from the fling of thousands of signatures from hundreds of volunteers, and doing it in a timely manner, and in a manner accepted to stand for election.

    I look every time, it’s like sprinkles on a sundae, it’s like parsley on a restaurant-quality steak.

    Comment by Oswego Willy Monday, Nov 27, 17 @ 3:50 pm

  17. How about having to get 10,000 signatures? This is the parties doing their best to avoid grass root campaigns. 10,000 is just intimidation but unlikely to change until an independent wins, which in Illinois will probably be never.

    Comment by NeverPoliticallyCorrect Monday, Nov 27, 17 @ 3:50 pm

  18. ===How about having to get 10,000 signatures?===

    Actually independent candidates have to get a MINIMUM of 25,000, while established party candidates only have to get 5,000. From the Candidate Guide:
    “Minimum of 1% of the number of voters who voted in the next preceding
    statewide General Election or 25,000 qualified voters of the state,
    whichever is less. (10 ILCS 5/10-3)”

  19. So the Dems at the head of the line for filing- per Monique Garcia picture.
    Anyone else notice Rep McAuliffe photo bomb on that one?

  20. Wow the IL GOP got 10 whole likes on twitter from its mere 14,000 followers in response to its 5th grade video alteration. Talk about an echo chamber. A very small one. #WhoCares

  21. First time in a long time not there. Being back in the pack for first day filers always a blast, everybody pumped up talking and joking, comparing signature stories. You cannot help but be in a good mood.

  22. === Democratic Party of Illinois at the head of the line. Told they had staff here holding spots on Thanksgiving Day. ===

    Sounds appropriate to me. The boss is a turkey and they’ve been accused of stuffing the ballot boxes.
