  1. Jeanne dont debate this guy. No sense in giving him either credibility or unnecessary publicity. Hes yesterday’s news.

Comment by Blue dog dem Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 12:08 pm

  2. Faux Rauner, “I love hit pieces when they are directed at somebody else.”

Comment by Norseman Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 12:08 pm

  3. Rauner is polling at 30% approval.

It’s not a hit piece, it a piece explaining how awful Rauner is, and why Rauner IS the worst Republican Governor in America.

  4. I called the Orville Redenbacher Company and said they may want to put in a 3rd shift. This is going to be interesting.

    ======

Umm a debate is what she needs to bury Rauner for good.

Comment by Real Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 12:14 pm

  6. Ives isn’t a credible candidate, so ignoring her would be a great strategy. But, my goodness, I’d love to watch each unhinge the other in a televised debate.

Comment by Dome Gnome Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 12:18 pm

  7. “…it’s not journalism, it’s a political hit piece.” Rauner. Too funny coming from a man who has helped finance so many political hit pieces and a “documentary”.

    Comment by Anon221 Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 12:18 pm

  8. If the ILGOP has any sense they’ll reject Ives and her sanctimonious extremism. It’s a bad path to go down, and all but guarantees a loss in November.

Comment by People Over Parties Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 12:23 pm

  9. I don’t think Ives can beat Rauner, but he isn’t doing himself any favors dismissing her. Make a statement welcoming her, say something nice and note where you disagree, move on. You just gave her ammo to raise money and mobilize support, and made it harder to get her supporters to come out for you in the general.

Comment by Montrose Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 12:25 pm

  10. Does Rauner consider the National Review a Madigan controlled publication or just a fringe journal?

    Comment by A Jack Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 12:45 pm

  11. National Review is the most conservative publication in America and the fact they don’t like Governor Rauner is a negative in Illinois?

They would prefer a Governor Ted Cruz or Steve King. Illinois voters disagree. I don’t think I have ever seen a week with more liberals quoting the National Review, as if they agree on any position they have ever taken. LOL!

Comment by Lucky Pierre Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 12:47 pm

  12. Can you still call them fringe after you’ve hired them to run your administration?

Comment by Michelle Flaherty Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 12:47 pm

  13. ===National Review is the most conservative publication in America and the fact they don’t like Governor Rauner is a negative in Illinois?===

It’s not that they don’t like him. National Review has a piece and cover calling Rauner the worst republican Governor in America.

That’s real. Polling at 30% approval, Illinois thinks Rauner is worse than Trump, the President, polling at 37%

This ain’t no badge of honor, lol

Rauner is a coastal, ultra-liberal Democratic governor that despised Labor, wants higher education eliminated, and wants social services destroyed or closed unless they are called The Ounce.

There is no constituency for Rauner.

    The 30% approval isn’t a base, it’s Rauner’s entirety

Comment by Oswego Willy Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 12:53 pm

  14. If Ives is Fringe, he’s at least a Shag carpet.

Comment by PublicServant Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 12:54 pm

  15. Lucky— well there are lots of conservatives in Illinois, so I guess you agree with the NR’s headline, cause they probably do. Who cares if liberals or independents agree?

Comment by Baloneymous Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 12:56 pm

  16. Rauner (or at least his PR team) knows he is a loose cannon when forced off script in a debate. All he knows how to do is reiterate his talking points. He’s gotten away with that do far … but a debate opponent who can think on their feet would make cole slaw out of him.

Comment by RNUG Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 1:05 pm

  17. Rauner is not a conservative, that’s why NR doesn’t like him.

Comment by Ron Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 1:10 pm

  18. Agreed RNUG. Just not sure this opponent in the one you describe who can think on their feet. It would be a contest to see who gets unglued first.

  19. “National Review is the most conservative publication in America and the fact they don’t like Governor Rauner is a negative in Illinois?”

The fact that he is the worst Republican governor in America sure seems like a negative…

    Comment by @MisterJayEm Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 1:18 pm

  20. === the most conservative publication in America ==

National Review is to the left of The American Conservative, Human Events and various other rightwing journals, not to mention Drudge and Brietbart.

    Comment by anon2 Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 1:23 pm

  21. So if she is a fringe is he saying he is not going to run ads against her?

Comment by Pieroge tirebiter Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 1:29 pm

  22. “So if she is a fringe is he saying he is not going to run ads against her?”

Rauner may not — but a completely unrelated and definitely uncoordinated PAC supporting him will.

    Comment by @MisterJayEm Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 1:35 pm

  23. Rauner is toast.
The sooner ILGOP dumps him, the better their chances next year.

Comment by VanillaMan Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 1:37 pm

  24. ==Ives isn’t a credible candidate, so ignoring her would be a great strategy.==

This is completely untrue, as is referring to her as a “fringe” candidate. I know a lot of you don’t like hearing it, but Ives’ form of conservatism (and the extreme right-wing views that she holds) IS today’s Republican party. This is no longer the party of George Bush and Mitt Romney. The Trump/Bannon/Ted Cruz republicans have all but pushed the Jeff Flake/Rauner/Charlie Dent republicans out the door. Anywhere else in the country Rauner would be the fringe candidate in a republican primary - not Ives. Illinois may still be an outlier come March, but it’d still be unwise to underestimate the level of conservatism among republican primary voters. If she raises some national money and hires good social media people, I bet this race is a whole lot closer than any of you guys think it will be.

  25. Love to see a debate. Ives circling Bruce, she yammering, jabbing, punching, all the while in a fierce countenance tilting toward her dazed, flat footed opponent; punching, jabbing, yelling “What’s My Name? What’s My Name”. lol

Comment by WasAnon Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 1:58 pm

  26. Ives has 0 chance of being governor. She is an awful, cruel person.

Comment by Ron Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 2:18 pm

  27. And Rauner seems to have zero chance of acting like a governor.

Comment by Pieroge tirebiter Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 2:21 pm

  28. So who ordered the hit and why, governor? Who has that pull with the National Review?

    Serious question.

Comment by wordslinger Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 2:26 pm

  29. Again, National Review is a conservative magazine. Rauner is not a conservative.

Comment by Ron Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 2:39 pm

  30. That would be a great debate just to watch the eyes and smirks from each of them.

Comment by zatoichi Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 2:44 pm

  31. I look forward to Rauner going door to door to explain that the National Journal is a conservative publication and it’s actually a good thing for the National Journal to declare him the worst governor in America.

Comment by Michelle Flaherty Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 3:20 pm

  32. –I look forward to Rauner going door to door to explain that the National Journal is a conservative publication and it’s actually a good thing for the National Journal to declare him the worst governor in America.–

Yeah, LP had Baghdad Bob laughing with that one.

Comment by wordslinger Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 3:23 pm

  33. =Rauner is not a conservative, that’s why NR doesn’t like him.=

He’s a man without a party and an ideology. Not a winning strategy when you have no constituency and no legislative accomplishments.

He’s a failure, plain and simple.

    Comment by So_Ill Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 3:29 pm

  34. He has failed, but that is because we have a Democratic party that cares more about public employees than the vast majority of state citizens.

Comment by Ron Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 4:29 pm

  35. Give it a rest Ron. Contrary to your fantasy public employees aren’t the cause of all bad things. Give the attitude a rest for 5 seconds for crying out loud.

Comment by Demoralized Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 4:41 pm

  36. Demoralized, your right, the state Republican party is as fault too. Edgar and Thomson being prime examples.

Comment by Anonymous Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 5:19 pm

  37. Ron, when Rauner goes to Southern Illinois and talks about reopening correctional facilities, who do you think he’s pandering to?

Comment by Michelle Flaherty Monday, Dec 4, 17 @ 7:37 pm

  38. To those who believe Ives has no chance, I present to you the 2016 Illinois Republican Primary results. You will notice that 68% of the vote went to candidates who have stated positions on lightening rod issues opposite of Bruce Rauner.

With Rauner’s shocking lack of accomplishments, total alienation of his base and not a single victory for his Chamber of Commerce crew. I ask who exactly is going to vote for this guy in the primary?
