Based on the overwhelming response to our email about Sen. Morrison’s efforts to kill the bump stock ban, she issued this response:
“All three pieces of legislation that the Senate passed a few weeks ago represent a bipartisan effort to deal with the epidemic of gun violence in our state. I am in favor of the most restrictive definition of what constitutes a bump-stock and I have complete faith in Rep. Moylan to do what he feels is necessary with HB 1467.”
The response is disingenuous:
Note that the House bump stock ban had bipartisan support. Thus no need existed for Sen. Morrison to placate the Gun Lobby at our expense.
Sen. Morrison’s claim of favoring “the most restrictive” bump stock ban is at direct odds with her own bill which bans nothing.
Sen. Morrison knows she left Rep. Moylan (the House sponsor of the bump stock ban) with two bad two choices:
Accept Sen. Morrison’s amended language; or
Let the bill die and start over.If you have not already done so, please email Sen. Morrison and let her know that we want to end gun violence in Illinois. Her email address is: xxxx@gmail.com.

To use his own word, this whole thing is entirely disingenuous.
First of all, Sen. Kwame Raoul sponsored that amendment, not Sen. Morrison. So, it’s not Morrison’s change.
You may recall that Rep. Drury made the same accusations against Sen. Raoul during the attorney general campaign. Raoul said at the time that the bump stock language was suggested by the state police. So, instead of going after his party’s AG nominee, Drury has decided to attack his own state Senator.
Secondly, Rep. Drury has been in the House since 2013 so he ought to know basic procedures by now. Rep. Moylan’s bill is HB1467. The Senate added an amendment. Rep. Moylan can now file a motion to either concur with the Senate’s amendment or non-concur. If a non-concur motion passes, the Senate then has the option to recede from its amendment. And Sen. Morrison has said she would defer to Rep. Moylan’s wishes.

Like when he claimed that his no vote on the AFSCME vote was upholding an unions right to strike which he beileved was “sacrosanct”.
Completely ignoring the fact that the bill designed only to effect AFSCME in THIS one negotiation with this one governor this one time.
Drury operates with the mendacity that most people don´t won´t fact-check his statements.

Have you met Scott Drury? Frankly I’m amazed he even knows the basic procedures for tying his shoelaces.
I kid, of course, it’s obvious he’s not really the human version of a labrador retriever. Still, if he wants to pretend he’s just dumb and not completely disingenuous, I say we all play along.

Surprised no one has played the “Drury is a Republican” card. The critiques of Drury here don’t change that Sen. Morrison sold out her district to the NRA. Supposedly, her office is in total damage control. Hence, her relative silence.

A Fan, ummm, Sen. Morrison’s extended cooling off period for assault weapons purchases is right now sitting on the governor’s desk.
Getting bills passed, that’s some damage control.

Mr. Drury is a former federal prosecutor.
Mr. Drury is currently a member of the General Assembly.
The fact he may know more about his former job is scary upon itself, but being disingenuous about makes it “Drury”
With the likes of Ives, Wheeler, and Drury already scheduled to leave, the House might have a better chance to save our state.

He’s not the absolute worst - in fact he gets a lot of leeway for his willingness to take on Madigan when pretty much every other rep is too cowardly to. But he’s way off base here - this is a popular issue in his district (it includes Deerfield) and he’s using it to gin up his popularity while he still has the platform. And Drury more than anyone should know that this is an issue in need of a federal resolution first and foremost. Someone wanting to do grave injury with one of these weapons is going to drive to Indiana just as easily as exploit a loophole in the state police’s definition of a bump stock.

Michelle Flaherty - was that the deal Morrison cut with the NRA … Wait three days before you can fire six hundred rounds per minute into a festival gathering. There’s no positive way to spin what she did. At least people now can see her true colors.

To the bill:
The Senate amendment (of which Morrison is a co-sponsor, but not the chief sponsor, and therefore not an appropriate target) changes the definition of bump stock so that it does in fact ban nothing. The amendment bans bump stocks that allow semi-autos to achieve the rate of full-autos. Bump stocks approximate the rate (hard for the human eye/ear to tell the difference), but they do not actually achieve the same rate. The Senate amendment renders the bill meaningless, because no such device exists. It seems Sen. Raoul and Sen. Morrison have realized how toxic their actions are. Sen. Raoul has publicly pointed to Sen. Morrison as the one who first proposed the meaningless bump stock language. Now, Sen. Morrison points the finger at him. They are both responsible and fair game to shoulder the blame.

Mr. Drury appears to be taking his recent shellacking in the Primary Election hard. He wants so badly to remain in the public spotlight so that all can reflect and admire him that he’s willing to do just about anything, apparently, to do that.
IMHO, that makes him “dangerous” as a legislator. People need to fact-check him early and often.
