*** UPDATED x1 *** Question of the day

Posted in:

* Background is here. From the electronic twittering machine…

Second local Republican, @SenChapinRose, says he spoke to @GovRauner this morning and asked him to apologize to Champaign-Urbana for "not much of a workforce" diss. Will he? The gov not exactly known for his retractions. https://t.co/lUrPyyH9Vi

— Mark Maxwell (@WCIA3Mark) June 26, 2018

* The Question: Your prediction of what happens next?

…Adding… From Sen. Rose…

“I’ve asked the Governor to apologize. Cook County could only dream of having consistently lower unemployment rates like Champaign County has seen over the past several years. In fact, over the last decade, as Chicago’s jobs climate has struggled, Champaign has maintained some pretty awesome employment statistics. And, it’s easy to see why: three interstate highways, a conveniently located airport, and the University of Illinois make it a great place to live and work, not to mention that our local workforce powers some pretty serious manufacturing too. Oh, and did I mention that we have no traffic. The people in the Champaign area work hard, and we are open to all businesses - which is why we are growing.”

*** UPDATE *** The Champaign County Chamber is out in DC and the governor paid them a visit today…

The @CCountyChamber Facebook post says “Governor Rauner visit (sic) us at our hotel and addressed recent comments made and apologized. We are proud of our growing community, diverse workforce and fierce loyalty our our entire community.” https://t.co/vNQEU5u1a4

  1. What happens next? What always happens.

Rauner grins and laughs and changes the conversation to be about corrupt Illinois politicians like Madigan.

Comment by Macbeth Tuesday, Jun 26, 18 @ 2:56 pm

  2. Rauner will remind Mr. Rose not to cause any $&@#% problems.

    If history is ANY indicator…

Mr. Rose said his piece. Then will quietly continue to do exactly what he’s been doing.

  3. He gives his tell - the soft chuckle - before non-answering with a non-sequitur

Comment by Joe Bidenopolous Tuesday, Jun 26, 18 @ 2:58 pm

  4. Clearly the next step is to double down and talk about how U of I would be stronger if the legislature would have funded it properly. (insert Madigan lines here)

  5. In his defense, Bruce was just relaying information offered to him by some little old lady.

    Rauner denies he said it.

The Chamber of Commerce stays silent.

  12. ===JB grabs a microphone and says that Champaign has the largest and best trained tech workforce in the nation and that Google, Amazon and Apple will all open offices there once we get rid of failed Governor Bruce Rauner.===

Sounds a lot like how 1871 was founded…

    Hmm.

  13. ==that Google, Amazon and Apple will all open offices there once we get rid of failed Governor Bruce Rauner.==

Sure am glad Rauner never stoops to grandiose predictions of what could be done once a specific political rival was dispatched.

Comment by Arsenal Tuesday, Jun 26, 18 @ 3:17 pm

  14. –Much ado about nothin(g)–

Right. Happens all the time, governors say things like that about their states’ citizens.

Maybe Rauner’s DCEO should make that the tagline for their business recruitment efforts: trade ads, outdoor, online digital….

“Illinois. Not Much of a Workforce.”

Comment by wordslinger Tuesday, Jun 26, 18 @ 3:19 pm

  15. “It’s a total misunderstanding”

    “I love Cham-Bana”

Comment by Sugar Corn Tuesday, Jun 26, 18 @ 3:19 pm

  16. =“Illinois. Not Much of a Workforce.”=

Yowza, that is a spectacular hit. Well played sir.

Chapin is about as fearsome as a daisy. I doubt Rauner is going to apologize.

Comment by JS Mill Tuesday, Jun 26, 18 @ 3:24 pm

  17. ===… and the University of Illinois===

… which you purposely, in the 99th General Assembly, forced to have no full fiscal year funding.

This will be the last Mr. Rose will speak of this.

Probably share a stage with the Governor soon, lol

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Jun 26, 18 @ 3:24 pm

  18. Rauner’s got to be just about the only Republican in Illinois who would accidentally end up on the Chicago side of the Chicago/Downstate rivalry, right?

Comment by Arsenal Tuesday, Jun 26, 18 @ 3:33 pm

  19. Sen. Rose will be asked to apologize to Chicago.

Comment by Bigtwitch Tuesday, Jun 26, 18 @ 3:35 pm

  21. Lucky:

The propoganda chief has spoken again.

At least JB didn’t bad mouth the city.

Comment by Anonymous Tuesday, Jun 26, 18 @ 3:39 pm

  22. In a month or so, Rauner will be bragging and taking credit on how great the Urbana-Champaign area is. He’ll tell us how he turned it around during his administration.

    Comment by Joe M Tuesday, Jun 26, 18 @ 3:39 pm

  23. *chuckle* “And you know what…?”

Comment by Nick Name Tuesday, Jun 26, 18 @ 3:39 pm

  24. What happens next?

    A) Nothing
    B) Something

That Something, whatever it is, will be totally irrelevant, will not address the grievance, will not consist of an apology, and will be essentially equivalent to “Nothing.”

Boy I can’t wait for that first debate.

Comment by Henry Francis Tuesday, Jun 26, 18 @ 3:42 pm

  26. Bad mouthing apparently means stating the obvious.

The large tech companies have not chosen for various reasons not to locate in Champaign even though many were founded by Alumni.

  28. ===The large tech companies have not chosen for various reasons not to locate in Champaign even though many were founded by Alumni.===

Maybe Rauner shoulda ran for Mayor of Chicago?

Poaching from downstate would make more sense, amirite?

    * Note: I know Rauner is not a resident of Chicago… unless he’s clouting another child into Payton Prep, then he’s a Chicago residence.

    You’re just sad

Comment by Demoralized Tuesday, Jun 26, 18 @ 3:53 pm

  30. Hahahaha @ Texas Red, the only real live person here willing to forgive a rich politician bashing citizens of a downstate city while promoting Chicago. Senator Rose wouldn’t even do that, and he gets campaign money from Rauner.

We at the Downstate Society demand you return all camo items to wherever you bought them, you sir have forever forfeited your right to wear it.

    Comment by Lester Holt’s Mustache Tuesday, Jun 26, 18 @ 3:54 pm

  31. Rauner: (laugh) I see Sen. Rose agrees with me on what’s needed for this promising community.

  32. ==Bad mouthing apparently means stating the obvious.==

Lucky, take the L on this one.

Comment by Arsenal Tuesday, Jun 26, 18 @ 4:05 pm

  33. Perhaps they can use this as starting point to grow tech jobs in Champaign instead of pretending they are there now.

What is sad is that there are no Illinois cities on this list.

America’s fastest-growing tech cities aren’t on the coasts

    #! Huntsville Alabama

One-year tech job growth: 309 percent
Median tech salary, early career (up to five years’ experience): $59,500
Median tech salary, mid-career (more than five years’ experience): $96,400

Located in northern Alabama, near the Tennessee border, Huntsville has been a tech center since the 1950s, when the U.S. Army put a group of scientists there to boost the country’s space program. The presence of what became NASA has served as a constant draw for the area.

It now has the third most technical workforce in the country, according to a Bloomberg analysis, with nearly 17 percent of the workforce in a science, technology, engineering or math job, abbreviated as STEM.

  34. The Gov. should apologize for trying to destroy the economic engine that drives the Champaign / Urbana area…. UofI

    Comment by Try-4-Truth Tuesday, Jun 26, 18 @ 4:15 pm

  35. In the words of the Old 97’s

…No you will not go to heaven
    You’ll go to Champaign, Illinois

Comment by Texas Red Tuesday, Jun 26, 18 @ 4:17 pm

  36. prediction: Rauner will blame the media and then state that he is in favor of the University of Illinois growing both in Champaign and Chicago, at which point UIC folks will get angry and point out that there’s already a University of Illinois-Chicago.

Comment by Robert the Bruce Tuesday, Jun 26, 18 @ 4:23 pm

  37. While everyone focuses on the first part of his comments, what I find strange is the last part :

==Rauner: Exactly. And a diverse, large workforce. And then use their technology innovation and ability, get their students integrated in the local economy and we can boom.==

One of the problems is that Champaign has too many white people in its work force? I know U of I has the reputation of having too many students from Asia, but just reading the quote it sounds like he’s saying that businesses won’t start or expand there until the local workforce matches the diversity of the student population. Hopefully I’m just losing his point in the transcription, because of that is what he’s trying to say - that is some weird, weird stuff.

    Comment by Lester Holt’s Mustache Tuesday, Jun 26, 18 @ 4:28 pm

  38. He’ll claim that he was misquoted and then tell us that he meant to say that Illinois is a bad place to start a business because of the Quinn administration.

Comment by VanillaMan Tuesday, Jun 26, 18 @ 4:41 pm

  39. Rauner hasn’t ever shown the capacity to apologize or admit that he made a mistake. He will avoid taking responsibility at all costs. Someone should ask him that if he could go back to the first day of his administration would there be anything that he would do differently.

Comment by The Dude Abides Tuesday, Jun 26, 18 @ 4:42 pm

  40. Rauner is really putting Rose in a bad spot. Two years with no appropriation to higher ed and when he does finally sign a budget it funnels tens of millions in new U of I development dollars to Chicago. Then he trashes C-U as nothing more than an economic backwater.

It’s a good thing Chapin is unopposed this Fall, otherwise he would have a hard time explaining what good his undying loyalty to Rauner has done for his district.

Comment by Roman Tuesday, Jun 26, 18 @ 4:51 pm

  41. The Governor doesn’t need to apologize!
Of course Champaign could be better!
Why, they still don’t have any Right to Work laws yet….

…but …should he publicly apologize for criticizing Illinois repeatedly?

Comment by Anonymous Tuesday, Jun 26, 18 @ 4:58 pm

  44. Rose: “I’ve asked the Governor to apologize….”

If that’s true, it begs the question: what was Rauner’s response?

  45. The Luckybot 8000 is no more discerning than the previous iteration. I’ll take ADM, Abbott Labs, Cat, and Deere, all tenants in the UI Research Park in Champaign, any day.

Didn’t we just discuss Champaign’s status as the fastest growing city in downstate here recently?

Comment by Arthur Andersen Tuesday, Jun 26, 18 @ 6:02 pm

  46. How many employees Arthur?

None of those huge companies are on the list of the top 25 employers in Champaign county and must have less than 340 employees.

We can do much better trust me there is all kinds of Tech iinside the Luckybot 8000

Comment by Lucky Pierre Tuesday, Jun 26, 18 @ 6:09 pm

  47. ===None of those huge companies are on the list of the top 25 employers===

Do they have more than six? Because that’s the bar.

Comment by Rich Miller Tuesday, Jun 26, 18 @ 6:43 pm

  48. How was Bruce to know that the good folks of the C/U area would be able to hear his disparaging comments… with such a feeble economic structure how could anyone there afford a fancy radio to listen to WGN?

Comment by Concerned Dem Tuesday, Jun 26, 18 @ 6:50 pm

  49. LP, “we can do better,” is the greatest bit of introspection you have ever posted. Stay with it.

You don’t understand reasearch parks and incubators if you think you are going to find manufacturer-level headcount there. The 1700 good jobs in 800,000 square feet of top-flight space is a huge resource.

I’ll take that eith ways from Sunday over the king of the short sellers Tesla, but you probably drive one. You have a lot in common, after all-over reliant on technology and subject to massive failure.

Comment by Arthur Andersen Tuesday, Jun 26, 18 @ 8:48 pm

  50. Looks like Rauner let you down again, LP.

Comment by Huh? Tuesday, Jun 26, 18 @ 9:42 pm

  53. What a schmo. People downstate have to be wondering (including myself), if he thinks this about Champaign, what does he think about the rest of the area in all the small towns and other areas. If I’m Pritzker, this ad writes itself for WCIA, WAND, and WICS. This election is over and anyone that wants to put a bet on it, let ole snapper know.
