Another million for Munger

Posted in:

[Bumped up for visibility.]

* They ain’t playing around…

Munger gets a personal contribution of $1 million from Governor Rauner. https://t.co/fkMbKo7gnm

— IL Election Data (@ILElectionData) November 3, 2016

* But her latest ad is a bit, um, different

I think that’s the first time I’ve ever seen guacamole used to make a point in a political ad.

  1. Guacamole…

Also note, Diana Rauner, the Democrat, gave Munger $1 million dollars, with Bruce.

Why they keep dragging her in this, I dunno, but as they keep doing it, it’s worth noting.

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Nov 2, 16 @ 8:05 pm

  2. Wilmette and Winnetka love them some Munger.

Comment by baloneymous Wednesday, Nov 2, 16 @ 8:11 pm

  3. Presumably there was a pitch meeting where someone pitched the idea for this ad and someone else listened to that pitch and said “yeah, great, film it.”

Comment by The Captain Wednesday, Nov 2, 16 @ 8:23 pm

  4. Guacamole — surely this is not a subtle hint at the Mendoza heritage or ancestry !!!!!

Why not salsa or a cheese dip?

Comment by illini Wednesday, Nov 2, 16 @ 8:32 pm

  5. salsa is not a dip, its a condiment /s

Comment by baloneymous Wednesday, Nov 2, 16 @ 8:34 pm

  6. Less than a week and Munger is gasping for air? Her polling must be as scary as this Cubs game.

    Comment by 47th Ward Wednesday, Nov 2, 16 @ 8:41 pm

  7. Team Rauner/Munger need to give up. Less than 1 week and they are still as desperate as ever.

Comment by Mal Wednesday, Nov 2, 16 @ 9:22 pm

  8. Mal - why would Rauner appoint her, prop her up, lend her staffers and then let her out to dry? That makes no sense.

I posted on other links on this site today to surmise that they view this as an investment that may or may not yield returns. This race is no different.

Comment by Team Sleep Wednesday, Nov 2, 16 @ 9:29 pm

  9. - Team Sleep -

It has become apparent - Mal - lacks a bit in the understanding of politics and subscribes to a different measuring matrix.

    Good luck, bud.

    ========

$6 million is already too much for a comptroller campaign. With less than 1 week before elections throwing in another $1 million is just tasteless and unnecessary. It’s a waste of money as well.

Another million will not stop Munger from losing Nov 8th.

Comment by Mal Wednesday, Nov 2, 16 @ 9:41 pm

  11. OW

See you Nov 8th when Munger is defeated! Lol

Comment by Mal Wednesday, Nov 2, 16 @ 9:43 pm

  12. Mal - a decade ago (during a non-presidential year) Alexi G spent close to $5 million to win the Treasurer’s office. $5 million! And most of that was from his parents and personal connections. He outspent Christine Radogno nearly 6 to 1. Remind me again why $6 million in a presidential year is out of line? This is especially true since constitutional offices have not been part of a presidential year ballot in 40 years.

Comment by Team Sleep Wednesday, Nov 2, 16 @ 9:49 pm

  13. I think the “double dip” rule only applies when sharing. That guy was not about to share.

Comment by MrGrassroots Wednesday, Nov 2, 16 @ 9:59 pm

  14. Team Sleep

Alexi G still spent less than Munger considering the fact he had both a primary and general election to campaign for. Munger only has a general election and is trying to desperately buy the election.

    Anyway Nov 8th Munger loses!

Comment by Mal Wednesday, Nov 2, 16 @ 10:21 pm

  15. - Mal -

The inept Mendoza Crew will need Democrats and Labor to bail them out. They may win, but it will be in spite of themselves, not Mendoza herself… but…

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Nov 2, 16 @ 10:26 pm

  16. George Costanza double-dipped in sour cream and onion. Interesting that they chose guacamole for this ad.

Comment by Roman Wednesday, Nov 2, 16 @ 11:22 pm

  17. ==throwing in another $1 million is just tasteless==

I believe this may be one of my favorite CapFax political comments of all time. I am howling.

Comment by Responsa Wednesday, Nov 2, 16 @ 11:52 pm

  18. Maybe if they had dropped this money 3 or 4 months ago it would have done some good. Most people I speak with have no clue who either of the candidates are in this race and will most likely vote party lines or skip the race all together.

Comment by Been there, done that Thursday, Nov 3, 16 @ 12:10 am

  19. I find this ad to have racist undertones, the guacamole is the tie in to Mendoza’s heritage. Leave to the GOP to go low, just like their leader for POTUS!

On the bright side, maybe there will be a taco truck on every corner if she wins.

  26. The ad looks like a modern-day episode of “Family Matters,” font, house and all.

Comment by Leatherneck Thursday, Nov 3, 16 @ 9:43 am

  27. This ad, as a Mexican-American, is particularly infuriating. I may be over sensitive to these things due to Trump’s rhetoric.

    But wow.

I was seriously torn between Munger and Mendoza. I really like Munger, I think she’s done a fine job. But this just sealed the deal.

Poor taste. Someone should have caught this before.

Comment by Meh Thursday, Nov 3, 16 @ 9:52 am

  28. Guacamole and tortilla chip? Against Mendoza?

A Munger ad asking, “Mendoza? What kind of name is that?” was deemed too subtle.

  29. It should be noted in the Seinfeld episode, Guacamole is not the dip George “double-dips”

It appears to be a white, French Onion dip.

    Why the change?

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Nov 3, 16 @ 9:59 am

  30. Rauner: I limit my contributions to pocket change and money I found behind the couch cushions. Diana limits her contributions to money she finds checking the pockets as she puts my clothes in the wash machine.

  34. This is a comptroller’s race?
    Embarrassing.

Comment by VanillaMan Thursday, Nov 3, 16 @ 10:19 am

  35. Willy - maybe trademark or legal reasons?! That would read like an Onion article: “Larry David sues Illinois Comptroller over trademark infringement.”

What are things can be dipped? Sour cream or french onion dip, salsa, cheese, guacamole, spinach & artichoke dip, caramel, hummus, crab dip, shrimp dip and Thai peanut sauce are the only dips I can think of after staying up way too late last night and not getting enough sleep. I now feel like Bubba in Forrest Gump. Maybe it was in poor taste. I have no clue. One thing I can say with certainty is that I cannot wait for this Godforsaken election cycle to be over next Tuesday night.

Comment by Team Sleep Thursday, Nov 3, 16 @ 10:20 am

  36. Wow, we’ve reached the stage of the election cycle where the black helicopters are everywhere. I’m sure the Munger team sat around in their white hoods scheming about the way they could subtly inject race into the sleepy Comptroller’s campaign. Yes, it’s all a conspiracy. Ridiculous.

  37. ===Maybe it was in poor taste. I have no clue.===

    - Team Sleep -

    With great respect,

You want me to believe… that?

You’re asking me to believe you don’t know if it was “maybe” in bad taste?

Actually, that’s a reflection of what you think of my judgement of you, and I respect you, and your thoughtful comments

I still think Munger pulls this out, said it consistently. It will also be Cross - Frerichs close.

    Subtle?

But you’re right. Things just end up in TV spots totally at random.

The concept is an accident. The set and props come out of nowhere. And the black dude and the white dude were picked by the Bozo grand prize game arrow.

  39. I guess we should be thankful the man in the checkered shirt wasn’t wearing a sombrero.

Was the “live” studio audience composed of IPI staffers or simply multiple copies of Kathleen’s voice.

Comment by Jocko Thursday, Nov 3, 16 @ 10:50 am

  40. Willy - the respect is mutual and appreciated but I say that in the vacuum of a) the end is near and people maybe don’t think or haven’t thought everything through and b) maybe things aren’t truly as offensive as people assume them to be. Just because people on this blog think that ad is in bad taste or claim it’s racist doesn’t make it so. We’re “insiders” and people who do this for a living and/or as a hobby. Our perspectives are different. Look at what happened yesterday with the Best Buy stuff. We all think that’s silly. But the general public might not. Will the general public find the commercial wrong? It’s chips and dip - something you can order at any number of restaurants/bars or buy at the store. Just because it’s tortilla chips and guac doesn’t mean Leslie Munger is inherently prejudiced. If people want to vilify me for not feigning anger or clutching my pearls then whatever.

Mark Kirk’s remarks last week were wrong. Linda Chapa la Via’s remarks against John Anthony were wrong. This?! I’m not so so sure.

Comment by Team Sleep Thursday, Nov 3, 16 @ 10:50 am

  41. I agree that it will be Cross-Frerichs close. I think the point spread will be 1 point or less.

Comment by Team Sleep Thursday, Nov 3, 16 @ 10:51 am

  42. what the blurg with the guacamole? that is some straight up ethnic bashing intention. would make me do videos of people eating quac and telling how much they love Susanana. ok, plus I just want the guac now….

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Nov 3, 16 @ 11:04 am

  43. No one is claiming that this spot will challenge the original “Birth of a Nation” for most racist film, but it clearly and needlessly jabs at Mendoza’s heritage. No one is weeping or rioting; it’s just in bad taste and we should demand more from our public officials.

Comment by AlfondoGonz Thursday, Nov 3, 16 @ 11:07 am

  44. - Team Sleep -

    You make good points.

I guess I have only ONE question left.

“If they’re trying to copy the Seinfeld premise, and in the Seinfeld bit, the dip is a white, simple, dip, why change the dip from Seinfeld to Guacamole? Why make that change if the joke is simply about double-dipping?”

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Nov 3, 16 @ 11:10 am

  45. Anyone want to respond to the actual message of the ad? No? Then it reached the people it was meant to reach. From a Republican perspective, anytime Democrats’ only response is “RACIST!” it means a Democrat has no legitimate retort. Been that way for the last 30 years, at least. It’s why the actual racism on display in the Trump campaign doesn’t get treated as seriously as it should by good people on both sides. But I forget: There are no good people on the other side, unless they agree with you. Right, partisans?

    Comment by JB13 Thursday, Nov 3, 16 @ 12:37 pm

  46. How does taking a chip from your mouth and putting it back in the dip relate? Like being a rep and having a job too?

Comment by Rabid Thursday, Nov 3, 16 @ 12:44 pm

  47. - JB13 -

    I’m a Republican.

Ask Rep. Chapa La Via if I see the possible racial undercurrents as partisan.

    Why change the dip?

It was ok on Seinfeld for a white creamy Onion Dip.

The joke is the double dipping, so why change the dip?

Ignoring the change of the dip… hmm… wonder why the message is lost.

    Also…

Are you saying Republicans can’t hear certain things, or are ok with certain things?

  52. Guacamole dip and chips have been served at every office reception, open house, seasonal party, get-together, family celebration and church pot luck I have attended over the past 5 years. You too, I bet. It is not even considered an ethnic food any more if it ever was. It is an American diet staple. Guacamole is not a racist food nor does this ad carry a subliminal racist message. It’s about double dipping which irritates many people both at the serving table AND also in politics. And it’s a great, simple ad message. Good grief people. Don’t completely lose your minds.

Comment by Responsa Thursday, Nov 3, 16 @ 1:25 pm

    The same that you said…

… can be said about Onion Dip, the type of dip, it appears, is being used in the Seinfeld episode.

Why change the dip? If the joke is funny with Onion Dip, why the need to change it?

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Nov 3, 16 @ 1:29 pm

  54. Perhaps Responsa thinks watermelon and fried chicken would be neutral in every ad. Or egg rolls.

Why not stay with the French Onion dip?

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Nov 3, 16 @ 5:52 pm

  59. ==Why not stay with the French Onion dip?==

Gee I don’t know why. Perhaps it was tested and green shows up better and looks more appealing on HDTV.

But my best guess is that french onion dip–the kind our moms and aunts made from Lipton’s dry soup and sour cream to serve with salty Ruffles potato chips– is sort of out of vogue these days. Sort of considered 70’s-80’s-90’s boring retro fare as well as pretty bad for you. Guacamole in its many forms on the other hand is fresher, more natural and healthier which is why it has pretty much completely replaced “onion dip” on buffet tables, end tables, sideboards, coffee tables card tables and picnic tables. That means the ad agency may have felt that Guacamole has more connection and relevance to what real people are actually eating these days. I hope this little chat will help you get past the bizarre focus on onion dip and if so, “you’re welcome”, (as you yourself like to say when you try to help other people see things from a different perspective.)
