Moylan wants ad taken down that apparently shows him making a false denial

Posted in:

* Rep. Marty Moylan’s campaign…

Please see State Rep. Marty Moylan’s statement demanding that Marilyn Smolenski calls on her benefactor, Dan Proft to remove an unethically obtained advertisement from the airwaves.

Smolenski is a Republican running against Moylan. Rep. Moylan’s press release is here. The president of the Park Ridge League of Women Voters demanded this week that the video clip of the debate be removed from the TV ad, which is paid for by Proft’s Liberty Principles PAC. Apparently, there was an agreement by both candidates not to use any video taken of the debate in advertisements.

* So, what’s everybody all excited about? I asked Moylan’s spokesperson…

The ad is a sad attempt to disparage Representative Moylan’s record of independent leadership by using an unethically obtained sound bite from the forum to deceive and divide voters in the 55th District.

Huh?

* It turns out, Rep. Moylan said during the debate “I do not take any money from Michael Madigan.”

Except he does, including $42K from Friends of MJM, another $131K from Madigan’s Democratic Majority PAC and $850K from the Democratic Party of Illinois.

* Here’s the ad

Thoughts on all this?

By the way, Moylan leading the “Who do we like? Mike!” chant near the end of the ad was from a union rally ahead of a screening of that Illinois Policy Institute documentary on Speaker Madigan the last election of Madigan as House Speaker. The Illinois Policy Institute had some demonstrators there, so the unions organized a counter-protest. Proft has reported spending a whopping $785,000 on ads attacking Moylan.

  1. two words, “independent expenditure”. What Mary S. agreed to does not bind others. It may be unethical, but not illegal. And why would he say something so demonstrably untrue and stupid?

  2. it’s the ad that’s lying, not moylan

  3. Proft must have money to burn in spending $785,000 on ads attacking Moylan who is not even in a tier one race.

    Huh? Moylan said he didn’t take money but he took over a $1,000,000.

  5. Not sure why he’s denying it; the 55th district voters seem to like the Madigan money flowing in. Marty won by nearly 20 point last time. Just own it man.

  6. So he’s mad that he is on TV in person using his own voice earnestly telling those in the room his $1 million whopper of not receiving any money from Madigan? And we can see his face.

    Sorry. My sympathy for his plight is less than zero.

  7. I have no dog in this fight, but of all the negative ads I have seen — print and video — this is the most straight-forward and honest.

  8. Whatever the source, this ad clearly shows that Moylan is deceitful enough to lie about a documented fact, and stupid enough to lead a cheer in public for the most hated politician in IL. Plus he sounds like a dope in both clips.

  9. No doubt Moylan was equally outraged about the Romney video that the bar tender leaked. No sympathy.

  10. Moylan has snookered Proft into wasting 3/4 of a million dollars. Moylan will win by at least 10 points. Dan needs to spend Uihlein’s money more wisely.

  11. ===Moylan has snookered Proft into wasting 3/4 of a million dollars.===

    No, Moylan straight up lied, got caught, and is upset about it. I tend to like him, but if I were in his district this would really give me pause. Not the cheering thing, but the lie. And the response to the lie: ‘no one was supposed to see it.’ Really? Disappointing conduct and ineffective response.

  12. Anyone who agrees to a debate in todays world should know better but if LoWV wanted No video they should have policed the room and shut off cameras etc. The add would have come out one way or another. His words are his to own.

  13. Will someone please start a Proft scorecard? I want to know how much Uihlein’s money he’s spending on each race, and I want to be able to figure out how many U-dollars were spent (and hopefully wasted) per vote. TIA

  14. Personally, I was very happy to see the ad running before the Bears v New England game last Sunday.

    I cant vote for either candidate, but I guess they like to run commercials for state rep races in large markets where 98% of the people that see it cant vote in that race.

  15. Wow. Marty can really cheer for Mike Madigan! I love this video. You don’t need to visit the official elections website to follow the money, you can tell from his enthusiasm that Madigan is giving him $$$.
