This is a well done “positive” closer ad; but I think he also needs a closer ad regarding “incompent manager” showing early release and budget mess. The 1-2 combo I think would seal the deal for Hynes.

  2. - Paul S. - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:44 pm:

I agree. This is a great positive ad, with his kids it is really cute; however, I think he needs to seal the deal and get one more jab at Quinn for the undecideds. This is better than the Quinn ad.

  3. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:46 pm:

He’s still running the early release stuff.

  4. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:46 pm:

And, as far as I know, the Harold ad.

  5. - ToddAF - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:51 pm:

Just saw the Harold ad on CBS 2, so he’s definitely still running that one.

  6. - anon - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 6:02 pm:

I am bias in this opinion, but hey that’s what an opinion is, right?

Quinn’s closer was much better. Decrying negativity, asking the people for their vote. Much better. I call it Quinn by a “hair,” thanks Andy McKenna.

  7. - Knome Sane - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 6:10 pm:

He hits the high notes….but for some reason, the song is weak….I am not sure this “closes” anything. I still contend that this is a race to GOTV and he who executes a better GOTV plan, wins…

  8. - anon - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 6:21 pm:

Quinn’s closer was better. I see a backlash with the Harold commercial. Quinn wins by 4 percentage points.

  9. - quinn fan - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 6:27 pm:

anon- that’s pretty dreamy….. even for us quinn fans….its gonna be a lot closer than that

  10. - prairiestatedem - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 6:35 pm:

The Ad war grinds to a close…but I think Quinn wins it by 2-4 Points…there is just a community of folks out there who are solid for Quinn. Any other Downstaters surprised by the lack of ads and field in the Gov’s race.

  11. - Will County Woman - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 6:35 pm:

Good ad, but I wouldn’t have this as my only ad running right now. I think this is way too soft to be a final message. Hopefully Hynes will keep this and other ads running concurrently.

  12. - And I Approved This Message - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 6:38 pm:

As the closing agruement, if it is, I don’t get this ad. “I have the support of teachers” means nothing without reference to the union. His references to Stevenson and Netsch mean a lot to me because I worked for both of them and hold them in the highest regard. Not sure the current voters know them or care

  13. - Obamarama - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 6:44 pm:

High production value, good message. However, when he talks about making millionaires pay their fair share, a clip of himself, in a suit, surrounded by a posse could have been better planned.

What a good lookin’ family too.

  14. - Chubs Mahoney - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 6:58 pm:

Nice ad, nice family, nice guy. But Dan Hynes has never led much of anything other than his election efforts. This eleventh-hour change in tone doesn’t change Dan’s totally unimpressive history in Illinois.

  15. - Louis Howe - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 7:01 pm:

If Quinn wins the primary, Illinois Democrats will face a wipeout this fall. Quinn is incapable of managing state government operations and we will continue to see more of the DOC type blowups going forward. Howver, I believe Hynes should win. His message is much clearer and ties into the anti-incumbent tread.

  16. - siu alum - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 7:16 pm:

I agree with Knome Sane. This race is going to come down to who’s GOTV is better and from what I have heard and seen, Hynes organization so far is superior.

  17. - siu alum - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 7:31 pm:

Sorry, forgot to rate the add (Just kidding Rich). I think its well done and shows he can relate to voters by including his family. I still think Quinn’s closer is a little better, but he really has his work cut out for him. I believe that this race will be a barn burner and will be won by a couple points and go either way depending on the turnout.

  18. - Responsa - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 8:03 pm:

Because of Hynes’ other earlier attack ads and his TV debate appearances I predict a lot of people are now going to see Hynes with his family and think, “that guy would never have unleashed violent criminals into the community.”

I rate it an A as a closer.

  19. - Anonymous - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 8:04 pm:

I thought the ad was very generic. Hynes earlier postive ad was much better. Not much of a closer.

  20. - T.J. - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 8:29 pm:

Dawn Clark Netsch is a plus?

  21. - The Shadow - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 8:42 pm:

It’s too bad for Dan that Charlie, Liam & Finley aren’t eligible to vote.

  22. - ZC - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 8:47 pm:

    TJ,

In a Democratic primary, Dawn Netsch is a plus? You betcha! Remember this voting demographic is going to skew gray on Election Day.

  23. - T.J. - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 9:04 pm:

I appreciate the reply. It’s easy to forget this is all one state sometimes.

  24. - Anonymous - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 9:36 pm:

This is a great tv ad for Hynes, i enjoyed it.

  25. - Just Wondering - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 9:52 pm:

Is Pat Quinn going to attack Charlie, Liam, and Finley for taking part in a political ad for their father?

  26. - Will County Woman - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 9:57 pm:

    Just Wondering,

yes, of course he will. He will hold a grudge for the next 25 years. but at least this in this instance he won’t “hold” a grudge on someone else’s behalf over something in which he was not involved.

  27. - Chicago Cynic - Friday, Jan 29, 10 @ 12:49 am:

    Really nice ad.

  28. - wordslinger - Friday, Jan 29, 10 @ 6:21 am:

Both Hynes’ and Quinn’s closers are good. They both actually ask for support directly, which, strangely, a lot of campaign spots do not. People like to be asked.

  29. - VanillaMan - Friday, Jan 29, 10 @ 9:04 am:

    Yes.
Dawn Clark Netch is a plus for a couple of important reasons.

She was also a Comptroller, like Hynes.
She was a gubernatorial nominee, like, I hope, Hynes will be.

Netch has kept her image as a honest Chicago politician. In this campaign, that helps.

Hynes presents himself more comfortably with Netch as an endorsee, to those voters comfortable with that generation of Illinois leaders. This is one of the groups naturally attracted to Quinn.

    Netch helps.

    Nice ad.

  30. - Team Sleep - Friday, Jan 29, 10 @ 10:22 am:

That was a very good ad. It’s amazing what an extra million here or there will do for a candidate. :)
