Brady, Quinn stand together in devastated town

* WLS reports on a couple of quotes from state Sen. Bill Brady…
Here is Brady last month on the governor. “Don’t underestimate Pat Quinn. He may be a buffoon when it comes to leading and on policies, but he is brilliant when it comes to leveraging the populist card in a Democratic state.”
And here is Brady Monday standing with the governor in the devastation of Washington, Ill. “This is obviously one of the most devastating catastrophes we’ve ever seen. It’s really important that we all rally together. This isn’t a partisan problem. This is a bipartisan solution. It’s not a local government problem. It’s a multi-government solution.”
Brady also praised the response by both the governor and his administration…

Good on Brady and on Quinn…Good Form indeed.
People devestated by the storms do not need politicians trying to “one-up” each other, so its good on both of them to show all Illinoisan are there, for those who need the help most.

Was Brady in his district or did he travel far to the devastation to be seen on tv? If the former, it makes sense, if the latter I can’t respect that.

Don’t think the pols won many votes from the people of Washington I know with so many frustrated residents blocked by officials from returning to their homes, even homes with no or little damage, yet the politicians were let through to do their grandstanding over the town’s devastation and people who wanted to take advantage of yesterdays weather before the nasty stuff set in had to park and walk a mile or so before they could get to work packing stuff up, boarding windows and tarping stuff up. I understand they worried about power lines and gas pipes were a concern but communication about everything could be better as could the uniform enforcement of whatever rules they come up with.

Should Brady only have concern for those in Illinois that live in his district?
I think all those devestated are glad they are getting the attention, which hopefully will lead to more relief.
Members of the Illinois General Assembly not only represent a district, but also have a responsiblity to all of Illinois.
In his district, out of his district, Bill Brady is a member of the General Assembly of the state of Illinois, and showing to all that a bipartisan approach to helping all who were effective can help comfort those effective, I am all for that.
District … or no district.
If it mattered what district, what, so every member of the General Assembly whose district was not effected should NOT approve aid to those areas?
How about we leave the politics at the doorstep and let the Illinoisans who lead this state work together to help those in need, and not question right out of the box a motive, when families are looking for their next bottled water to drink.

He’s either in his district or very close to his district. Washington is just a few miles north of I-74 between Peoria and Bloomingon. There’s probably a lot of commuters from Washington to either of those cities. He probably knows affected people personally. I applaud him for showing up and showing support.
I also seriously doubt that either of them can control the logistics of who is allowed in to town and where they can park any better than IEMA and law enforcement.

Washington is part of Bradys Senate district now. The state rep, Sommer, was also there as was Schock. They all represent Washington.

Since it sounds like it is Brady’s district… I fully understand why he would be there.
But @Oswego Willy — you can’t be serious? If it wasn’t his district, I think it would be more than a coincidence that he showed up considering he is running for Guv. Are you suggesting that every member of the General Assembly run to every disaster in the state? If they aren’t actually rolling up their sleeves (e.g. serving food, volunteering at a shelter, etc.) then what benefit would there be for every General Assembly member to rush down there?

The area is indeed in Bill Brady’s district due to the map drawn by the Dems.
When it comes to disasters like the tornado, it is a time to suspend the political rhetoric and concentrate on helping those impacted!

When one of the posters announced that the Governor was coming to Washington, there was a lot of negative talk on Facebook about politicians showing up at disasters and using it as a political moment. People want results not words spoken in front of cameras and microphones.

You always see that sort of response by some. Others, however, tend to appreciate the notice and the effort. And if they didn’t show up, you can bet there’d be an uproar.
In other words, what you’re talking about isn’t new and it isn’t the full story.

Here is my take on it.
Bill Brady is a Downstate Republican, and downstate felt a good portion of the devestation.
By supporting the state, and the governor, and only by supporting the state and the governor, I have no problem with Brady being down there. I would have no problem with any Illinois Official, who is there to be supportive to the cause be down there, focusing on a message of relief and aid.
It can be real eazy to be cynical, and I can understand that feeling, but shining a light on a bipartisan attempt to help people in need should not be met with cynicism from the get-go.
If the reason to be there is to aid in the message we are all in this to help, and politics is put to the side, how is that bad? Are you also saying those in need, need less support?
The support of the governor, and the agencies is key here.

Went through a post-tornado episode in the town I grew up in. They need to first plow the streets strewn with debris. Then the water, gas and electric utilities come in to turn off or reconnect homes and businesses, depending on if they are salvagable or not. Then the homeowners can go through and try to salvage what they can.
BTW, some of the Chicago Bears were headed down to Coal City today to serve meals and deliver supplies.

Yeah, Christie really got stung. Doing the right and decent thing only made him the most popular politician in America.

I figured this would come up. Although I hope this doesn’t come up in an election. It wasn’t bad idea for Christie to appear with Obama during hurricane Sandy and it’s not for Brady to appear with Brady in light of the severe weather over the weekend.

Yes, as I pointed out this joint appearance on a comment yesterday, such Bi-Partisan unity and communication of commitment to action, help and hope at a scence of such human suffering and destruction, during a time of such misery, is indeed encouraging and a sign of real leadership. But those who are knocking Gov. Quinn down over his gracious outreach and deferral to the Senator to join together with him/others, and in the communication of such a sanguine message in the midst of so much pain, should be ashamed for pulling out such a hammmer against him at this time!
Gov.Pat Quinn is to be highly COMMENDED for all that he’s doing and his insistence that–as best we can as ONE Family of Illinois and though it’ll take a lot of time, money, manpower and FAITH–”we will prevail over” this horrible tragedy in the end, as is Bill Brady to be complemented for putting petty differences aside and supporting the same cause!! For land’s sake, it’s stuff like this that should make us PROUD to be Illinoisans!

I can understand some folks being cynical on some of these other politicians trying to get political mileage out of someone else’s misfortune. However, I don’t think that umbrella covers either Quinn or Brady. Both of these guys are sincere guys. Quinn drives me (and others) nuts because he is so inept but he does have a good heart. Brady is very religious and he is “the real deal” when it comes to his sincerity. I respect both of them for being there in Washington, Illinois.
This recent disater will play daily on the news for a week (or maybe two) but then the media and the people will forget about it. Yet, those poor folks living there will have to deal with the event financially and emotionally for the rest of their lives.
